Certainly he is one of my favourite actors at the moment, turning in a challenging and fascinating performance as a convicted, recently released paedophile in Todd Field's Little Children.

Saw this earlier this year and thought he was excellent but then so was everybody around him. Maybe with Nightmare's mediocre cast he made him feel a let down also? Btw, if you haven't already, check out Kevin Bacon's performance in The Woodsman. Also a phenomenal movie.
I'm interested in seeing this, if only to see if they've improved on a couple of points that have always annoyed me in the overrated original. I very much doubt they have and in the meantime, probably lost the identity the original had.Mark Kermode all but fell asleep when he watched it. He noticed no improvements at all.

It definately wasn't new or fresh. It was straight down the line average. They did try to do a sort of origins story through dreams and whilst it was a great idea it was executed in what seemed to be an edit/tell-by-numbers fashion.
Onto other Craven projects now; what do you think of the Scream 4 idea?

The Hurt Locker (2008) United Kingdom Blu-ray (rental)
Overview:
From visionary filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker is an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When renegade Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner - 28 Weeks Later, The Assassination of Jesse James) takes command of a highly trained bomb disposal unit, he frequently risks the lives of himself and those around him with his suicidal methods and a complete disregard for danger. Caught in the middle are his subordinates Sergeant J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie - Half Nelson, We Are Marshall) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty - We Are Marshall, Jarhead), who can only watch as their leader descends further into addiction: an addiction to war.
My Thoughts:
I was a little skeptical of this one because my old man said that he didn't like it as much as he thought he would. Usually this wouldn't mean anything to me, but he was a bomb disposal technician for his full Army service of over twenty years serving in the Gulf for over a year and Northern Ireland during some etchy times. Thankfully, he completed his full service just before the current war started and he now works for a private defence company. Despite this, I'm glad I did watch it because I enjoyed it. Not working in the field, I don't notice some of the technical stuff he was banging on about and instead I focused on the story which had me gripped. Bigelow manages to make the movie tense and suspenseful in all the right parts with a perfect spraying of both drama and action. Great stuff. 4.5/5
and won a significant voucher that I still haven't fully spent! :dance:Stop buying BluRays with it and get the set I told you, finish the bava marathon and give us the chance to read the missing reviews you has in our marathon :tease:
Wow! That's a heck of a run. "Off shore"? What do you do, Sam?
I actually picked this up because of actress Melanie Lynskey
I really liked Dead Calm when I first saw it at the cinema. Due to it's slow pacing and the story not getting forward more quickly I have yet t manage to re-watch it.

This is the same reason why I have this movie in my collection. I haven't watched the movie since I got it seven years ago, but I remember enjoying it.
They are more in the line of The Office, the so-called cringe-comedy. Clearly a mistake in the marketing on these, I think.
btw, if you like The Office check out Operation Good Guys. ;)I took a quick at Amazon and it looks like it could be fun. Wish listed for at list if I need something to fill my next order; series 1-3 is only £9.99 :o
Don't forget the the third movie, Little Fockers is in production.:o
I love this film. You should seriously consider the Preston Sturges boxset. It is superb.
The US release is pan & scan:yuck:
Diary of the Dead is yet another film in Romero's mainly one trick pony career. Not that there is anything wrong with that, he is damn good at that one trick, and even the critically disliked Land of the Dead was a joy to watch in my opinion. However, my first viewing of Diary of the Dead was rather disappointing. It's good, but there is nothing new, with Romero even jumping on the 'handheld camera footage' bandwagon that started after The Blair Witch Project which Matt Reeves managed to do a whole lot better than Romero with 2008's Cloverfield. I wasn't overly keen on any of the characters and the way a lot of the script revolved around 'why are you filming?' / 'I don't wasnt to be filmed' annoyed me. It's good to see Romero go back to his roots but he's better than this average effort. 3/5
Well, when a film is a rom-com starring Freddie Prinze Jr, you shouldn't hold out much hope. Bought solely for Rosario Dawson's small role, this is actually a film of missed opportunities. Instead of being your typical boy (Prinze Jr) meets girl (Julia Stiles) it actually turns into a break-up and a series of 'what ifs?' What if they had stayed together? This results in what started as a rom-com trying to turn into a drama making a mess of the general feel of the film. Freddie Prinze Jr has absolutely zero screen presence, Stiles doesn't so much better. It does have a few good moments, generally involving Dawson or Selma Blair but it's a film that doesn't know which direction it wants to go in and because of that, it falls apart. 2/5
His next project is directing a remake of Deep Red so we'll see how that pans out...No need to wait to see it to know it will be a piece of shit. What an useless and insulting idea
Is Black Sheep the first killer sheep movie?Actually not...
Maybe the voters are all German but I strongly doubt it as a german version of imdb exist...
Wow this is an ugly cover :yucky:IIRC this is what the poster looked like in Asia. At least the girl is actually from the movie... It's not really what I'd expect or a horror movie though.
At least the girl is actually from the movie...I know, that little girl made me do a hell of a jump when I've seen the film the first time
But I would deduct more points for the biggest of all flaws: Zombies Don't Run!I can leave with the running zombies, my biggest problem with this film is the fact it has too many characters in it and they aren't really develloped because of that fact. I mean the original did a great job of making us care about the characters because there were only four of them.

I'm sure I won't miss any storyline interlinking them :hysterical:No you won't, the three films aren't related.
I'm surprise that you can't have this one completly uncut in 2011... I thought that the days of non-sense censorship were over in your country. OK the scene cut is a rough one to watch, but it's rated 18 for crying out loud.
Nice to see that you got the italian track (correct me if I'm wrong, but it's a dub track too as the english one).

Was it resubmitted? I know the BBFC have expressed their frustration before that they are still blamed for cuts when in fact, no-one bothers to resubmit the work when it comes around for a new format or reissue.
I talk in general not necessary about this film
Some label think it's too costly to resubmit the movie again for what it's worth. You can always import them as we do when something isn't available here? or it's always risky and your package had a good chance to be confiscated...

The only difference between US and UK is that here refused classification makes it illegal to screen at cinemas or sell in shops (though local councils can overturn this and even change ratings) whilst you can just get it as unrated. It's the same here. If your product isn't rated you can't sell it, but everything pass here unless it's bestiality or kid sex. Even if a film is rated it's impossible to sell it in a second hand shop if we don't have the rating sticker anymore.
Like I said everything pass as our rating board know they have no bussiness at telling adult what they can or can't watch as long as it isn't one of the two big no-no. It's the reason why I'm always amazed of how England, the US or the other canadian province deal with that...
People do have a bad conception. It's probably because when we think England rating board we think of what happened in the eighties. I mean The Funhouse (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082427/) was banned because they confused it with a different films (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076295/)
She claimed that Doctor Who had nightmarish qualities, saying it "contains some of the sickest, most horrible material"
Good chance I never watched it even with the praise this show got here. I'm so sad to see I was wrong thinking I was the one watching the most offensive movie here :(
But seriously no one realized she was just a religous nut (or an IRLT) not worthy of being taken seriously
Did you hear at the time, even Tony Blair brought it up in the Commons.
Just got this one myself!

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) R2 United Kingdom
[...]though I do think Gandolfini plays a better mayor than Lee Wallace, and the dark underlying humour that was in the original has all but gone from the remake. Still, it is an enjoyable enough update that is worth watching. 3.5/5
I never knew much of this one. Being about the ballet I never gave it any more thought. Didn't realize there was horror elements to it. Wonder if it is something I would like. It must have lots of music in it... so possibly not.
Ah, interesting! I was going to comment that I rarely see a 5/5 from you, if ever, and then you pull it out of the bag for this one. :P I really enjoyed it too. Awesome film. I'd say it isn't as good as The Wrestler, but it's splitting hairs for me.

Young Frankenstein (1974) The sets look very similar to those that James Whale would've used...
There is a reason that the sets look familiar, Mel Brooks did indeed use much of James Whale's original sets for Young Frankenstein.
You learn something new everyday! Thanks Kathy. Do you know which films in particular the sets were used from? I was mostly reminded of The Old Dark House rather than Frankenstein itself. (A film I need to rewatch... had pretty much forgotten about it until watching YF).

I was always obsessed with Mel Brooks - I bought everything I could get my hands on that had anything to do with him. I used to say he was the only man I would ever marry!
I'm not sure exactly where I read or saw Brooks discussing the sets - sorry - but I thought that was so cool I never forgot it. Somehow it made watching the film that much more special to me.
...with some of the young actresses looking plainly embarrassed by their pretentious dialogue. To make matters worse, the piece unfolds in a shapeless style that considers it a virtue to confuse and wrong-foot the audience. It may pass muster when projected on an art gallery wall, but at the cinema it's a dead loss: a drably shot, underwhelming clunker, produced by a tabloid-baiting self-publicist long past her sell-by date.http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2004/11/29/top_spot_2004_review.shtml
Heh. Never heard of Tracey Emin before, but you guys stompin' around makes me wonder if I might actually like the film.

Honestly, I'm only basing my opinion on what I think of her, but I still think you wouldn't like her stuff either. Even when I don't like the films you do, I can appreciate the talent involved and the message they were trying to convey.
Take a look at this link. If you are intrigued bythis complete tripeher past work then, maybe she has a chance with you and you should watch the film. If like me, you look at "Unmade Bed" and think WTF, move on. ;)

and Sam's knee-jerk reaction that piqued my interest.
Conceptual art is easy to dismiss and without knowing anything about her that doesn't elicit a reaction from me, one way or the other. I skimmed through a couple of other reviews of the film and it's hard to get a handle on it. I've recently seen Matthew Porterfield's pretty great Putty Hill (which uses a fake documentary approach including interviews to portrait a group of people) and I wonder if Emin's Top Spot could be in similar vein. But apart from that it's pretty much only your and Sam's knee-jerk reaction that piqued my interest. I reserve that kind of hatred for the Spielbergs of this world. ;)
Have you seen The Incredible Journey?
One thing REALLY bugged me though in this film, reducing the enjoyment for me: The eating habits of the vampires. Why do they have to be so messy? It doesn't even make a lot of sense, since after the first kill there is no more chance to blend in to surpise the next victim. Or what about the blood cooling down and eventuzally freezing in/on the clothes? The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way.

National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze (2003) R1 USA
Overview:
Unrated! Uninhibited! Unbelievably raunchy! Tatyana Ali ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), Danielle Fishel ("Boy Meets World") and Chris Owen (American Pie) star in National Lampoon's Dorm Daze...and this unrated version busts loose with more babes, more bonuses and a bevy of sexy scenes that'll leave you gasping for "daze"!
When a foreign-exchange student and a hooker – both named Dominique – show up on a college campus, the unsuspecting student body is in for the education of a lifetime!
My Thoughts:
If you've seen any of National Lampoon's ouput in the last ten years then you'll pretty much know what to expect from Dorm Daze. I bought it based on the fact it stars Tatyana Ali, Danielle Fishel and Courtney Gains and I haven't really seen them in anything since the turn of the century. Unfortunately, Dorm Daze isn't the best of college based comedies... hell, it isn't even the best college based comedy from National Lampoon, but there is a little bit of enjoyment to be had here. If you can get past the hammy acting and recycled sex joke dialogue, the actual basis for the film is actually not a bad one, with a French foreign exchange student and a hooker getting mixed up by the students. Still, I can barely muster a low-end rent it and even then, it's only worth renting for people who are fans of the cast / like these National Lampoon comedies. A generous 2.5/5
It's John Carpenter's Vampires :P
Have you seen their TV: The Movie? This looks so original... Ken Shapiro already did that in 1974 with The Groove Tube (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071583/) ::)
I always removed them too, but it was a good opportunity to bring back that old controversy :laugh:It's John Carpenter's Vampires :PI always remove actors/directors names from movie titles (well... apart from Being John Malkovich etc of course). I hate it.
I can't decide between RoboCop and Starship Troopers as to what is my favourite Hollywood Verhoeven movie of all timeThat is a tough call to make. I think I'd give RoboCop the edge, as it's the tighter film. I wish there was a good Bl-Ryan out there I could upgrade to...
I like this one. Even if this isn't really a north american phenomena that was fascinating to watch, but thanks subtitles are included in the Blue Underground release because the accents are hard to hear
Please tell me you don't pay for that kind of film and you get them as screener... Just the cover is shouting that will be a crappy TV time.
I didn't technically didn't pay anything specifically for Date Movie and I still think it sucked. One of the worst movies ever made.As much it is bad it was better than Epic Movie and Disaster Movie... When I think I've all those stupid movies because of a marathon on our forum
I don't mind him casting himself, because it comes from his everybody-mucks-in, just get the film made style, plus he usually picks very small roles and can be effective surrounded by the heavyweights. His verbal attack on Jules in Pulp Fiction is one of my favourite scenes ever! It works brilliantly because Jackson is humbled and Travolta is getting so pissed off and Tarantino as an actor isn't anywhere near either of them.
Jason Connery is awful and overacts every scene, reeling off each line of dialogue with the professionalism of a News of the World telephone hacker. That's the kind of thing to expect when someone do movies only because he is the son of another someone...

Kill List (2011) Region B United Kingdom
Overview:
KILL LIST - from the acclaimed Director Ben Wheatley (DOWN TERRACE) starring Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley, Myanna Buring, Emma Fryer.
Eight months after a disastrous job in Kiev left him physically and mentally scarred, ex-soldier turned contract killer, Jay, is pressured by his partner, Gal, into taking a new assignment. As they descend into the dark and disturbing world of the contract, Jay begins to unravel once again – his fear and paranoia sending him deep into the heart of darkness.
My Thoughts:
OK, this is going to be very difficult to even write a short piece about without giving anything away so I won't talk about plot points. Kill List is a film that has received huge critical praise but the general public weren't quite so thrilled. For me, I side with the critics for a change. Kill List is one of the most finely acted and chilling thrillers to come out of the UK in quite some time. The main cast of Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley and MyAnna Buring are absolutely fantastic and the film changes atmospherically so quickly several times smoothly, in good timing with the way the plot unfolds. The ending is a complete mess of the mind, done so well that I have to highly recommend this Ben Wheatley feature. 4.5/5
This was really quite good and I'm pretty sure especially Jon and Achim would enjoy it as well.It is already on my Wish List. Unfortunately the UK release is Region B only, so I am waiting for the US version (which isn't even announced yet). Kermode gave it a glowing review as well.

The juxtaposition of the mundane with the horrible and the quick tonal changes didn't throw me as much as it probably was intended, but I didn't expect it to go so completely off the rails towards the end.

I have seen it and really liked it. Still haven't made my mind up if I liked the ending though...
Erik Estrada is in this too, so maybe the money goes to him
Of course that would be more realist in we were stuck in 1980

I had no idea that the 90's versions were remakes! I love Homeward Bound and the sequel was ok too but I shall now have to look for the original!
Eric Tsang is quite the star in this section of the globe. But if you have mainly seen him in serious roles would be a misrepresentation of his repertoire.
Jay Chou is not an actor at all, he is a Taiwanese pop star mainly cashing in on his popularity.
As soon as I saw Melissa George's name on the cover (at first glance) I knew this one would have to go into my wishlist. After reading the review I am hoping to add it to my collection before too long! Thanks!
"American Humane has rated this film "Monitored: Unacceptable" due to the numerous deaths of young animals and the unlawful and fraudulent behavior that we believe impacted their fate. Although the producers may have been victims of unscrupulous people in their hire, American Humane, as an animal protection organization and the animals' safety representative, finds the outcomes for these animals unacceptable. After further reading, it seems the breeders that Disney got the puppies from were arrested on federal charges of falsifying documents before selling the puppies to Disney, and Disney were found to not be at fault.
American Humane would like to acknowledge that the production cooperated in every way with the Animal Safety Representative's recommendations, and once the unhealthy puppies were removed from the set to receive veterinary care, healthy puppies were then brought in -- using proper procedures and following all guidelines regarding age limits, vaccinations, illness prevention methods and other safety protocol -- to ensure that healthy puppies were ultimately used during filming."
I don't mean in cash, as it probably did fairly well
but if you like Besson, this is recommended. 4/5I like Besson a lot, especially his older stuff (Nikita and Professional as well as Subway, The Last Battle, The Big Blue), so I might have to rethink my decision to skip this :hmmmm:
so I might have to rethink my decision to skip this :hmmmm:
Yes, a very clever film indeed, considering it really is very predictable. However, it is virtually two films in one as each brothers path could be different kinds of sports movies on their own, so I really liked how they complimented one another.
Don Bluth was responsible for some of my favourite animated movies including An American Tale, The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven. He did the animated sequence in Xanadu too ;D
A lot of critics got their knickers in a twist about Aniston's character being too sexual and it was apparently offensive.
- Vincent Kartheiser. I just didn't care for his performance as Seyfried's father.I remember him from one or two movies a while back; Another Day in Paradise(?) and some movie about terrorists taking over a school(?). I am a bit surprised to see that he is now old enough to play a parent...

Seems like you got a batch of German DVDs.
- Everything leading up to the end credits. Acting was awful, storyline made little sense and action was poor poor poor. This is probably why I can't remember this film at all, even if I'm sure I saw it when it was on the big screen. I was at the movie theatre each week in my early twenties and the first one was great so it's a given I paid big buck to see this as I hated the half price night.
Have you seen the Director's Cut, or "improved" Cut (I haven't). It takes out the whole alien angle and keeps the story on earth.
- Won't somebody bring back 90's Nic Cage? Con Air, The Rock, Snake Eyes, Leaving Las Vegas...He died and now this other guy is in charge...
I didn't like Club Dread at all. Jay Chandrasekhar's character would have been offensive if it was any good and none of the others were any better. Part of the reason I disliked it so much was because I really liked Broken Lizard's other films, Super Troopers and Beerfest. The same actors just basically play themselves and lark around, so the end result is much better. Highly recommend those two.

I've seen both and thought they were also 3/5's. Found Super Troopers a little overrated though loved the scene where they pull over the stoners. The characters were funnier in Super Troopers but I found the story in Club Dread, whilst forgettable, better thought out. Beerfest I need to see again before really saying much more. From what a friend of mine has said, The Slammin' Salmon is their best. I've not seen it though.
I might have to change the wish list priority of Hesher. Thanks or the review, good to know it's not the dark comedy the trailer tries to sell. Wrong expectations could have easily ruined the movie experience.

The Last House on the Left (2009)
Overview:
Masters of horror Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham revisit their trademark film that launched Craven's directing career and influenced decades of horror films to follow.
After she arrives at her parent's remote lake house, Mari and her friend are kidnapped by a prison escapee and his crew. Terrified, brutally assaulted and left for dead, Mari's only hope is to make it back to her parents. Unfortunately, her attackers unknowingly seek shelter at the same place.
When her family learn the horrifying truth, they make the strangers curse the day they came to The Last House on the Left.
My Thoughts:
Yay, another horror remake I hear you cry! Well, before you dismiss it, give it a go because this version of The Last House on the Left from director Dennis Iliadis is rather good. Whilst the cast is not quite as good as the 1972 original and certain horrific elements are toned down (but still shocking), this remake is more polished and overall, stands on it's own two feet well. The setup is well done, the rape scene is as horrific as it should be and the scenes of revenge devastatingly gory but not completely OTT like with many horror movies. It may lose a bit of the shock factor compared to the original in part, but it makes up for it with tighter dialogue and a more fluent storyline. I recommend both versions as they are both as good as each other, but for different reasons. Recommended. 4/5
First time I read a good review of this... Didn't know it was release on DVD, how is the quality? Transferred from film or tape?
(click to show/hide)
I like your idea. That would def be interesting :) But i just hope. (if they do a number 5) that they dont ruin it. And when is enough? 4? 5? 6 even?
Take the SAW franchise. They did great with so many movies. But then again, look at others, that didnt do well at all :) So whats enough? :)
But take the Hostel Saga f.ex. I loved the first 2 movies. But when i watched the movie number 3. Wow i got disappointed. IMHO i think Tarantino draged it a bit to far, and there is talk about a number 4. And IF they do that. I'm not sure if i'll watch that one. After what they did with the number 3. (And i love a good horror movie\story)
But the possibility is when the 3rd is bad. Why would the 4th be better?
But the possibility is when the 3rd is bad. Why would the 4th be better?
Generally yes, but always some nice surprises to be found. The Fast and the Furious franchise for example.
Road Trip (2000)
I really like the F&F franchise.. But the Fast Five, i didnt like it that much. The story in that movie wasnt very F&F like to me. But i see that there will be a number 6, so it will be interesting to see how that works out. :)

American Gangster (2007)
Overview:
Academy Award® winners† Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe team with director Ridley Scott (Gladiator) in this powerful, epic story. Armed with ruthless, streetwise tactics and a strict sense of honour, crime boss Frank Lucas (Washington) rules Harlem's chaotic drug underworld. When outcast cop Richie Roberts (Crowe) sets out to bring down Lucas's multimillion-dollar empire, it plunges both men into a legendary confrontation. American Gangster is "a brutal and brilliant film" (Pete Hammond, Maxim).
My Thoughts:
Pros:
- Ridley Scott pulls together a great cast. Both Washington and Crowe impress (and I'm not a fan of Crowe).
- Although the extended cut was almost three hours long, it didn't outstay it's welcome. The characters develop well and with it being based on a true story, it's an interesting look at Frank Lucas' life and the police corruption in 1970's New York.
- The sets, clothes and the locations were perfect.
Cons:
- There were too many scenes where Washington loses his cool and it seemed to retread slightly.
Overall:
We haven't had a great gangster epic since maybe Gangs of New York, but this almost takes me back to Casino/GoodFellas. Recommended. 4/5
Nice! I havent seen this one yet, but i have it in my unwatched pile. But i havent taken the time yet to watch it, since its lasting so long. Specially the bluray version of it. But i do like both Crowe and Washington's work :) So this will be an interesting one.I agree with Sam's review. It's been a while since I have seen it but I seem to remember that the running generally was not a problem, it being a well paced film. You should schedule it in somehow, it's still below 3 hours...

Cons:I fault the trailer for this. I saw the trailert before watching the film (Tom had posted it here in the forum) and they seemed to try to catch the Kick-Ass audience with that fast-paced action-y trailer. The film is good, but it's not Kick-Ass (and I mean that very objectively), which is why I needed to adjust to the film at first as I was expecting something else.
- It takes a good twenty minutes to get a feel for the tone of the movie.

Powder Blue (2009)
Overview:
Jessica Biel, Ray Liotta, Forest Whitaker and Eddie Redmayne lead a top-notch cast in this powerful thriller about an overwhelmed erotic dancer, a grieving husband who has lost his will to live, a terminally ill ex-con and a pathologically shy mortician. With Kris Kristofferson, Lisa Kudrow and Patrick Swayze in unforgettable supporting roles, this film movingly chronicles the imperfect lives of people teetering on the edge of despair and the miracles that bring them back.
My Thoughts:
Pros:
- Not only have we got a very good primary cast, we also have a great supporting cast.
- The four main subplots intertwine with each other very well.
- It's emotionally charged and it doesn't let up all the way through. It's helped mostly by Forest Whitaker and Jessica Biel.
Cons:
- Lisa Kudrow. Come on Hollywood! Stop giving this women movie work. She just isn't good enough.
- Some of the dialogue from characters with just a couple of lines is a little clunky and feels forced.
Overall:
This isn't a happy film, but it is worth the effort. Unfortunately it will become known more for Jessica Biel's topless scenes, than the characters. Recommended. 3.5/5
I buy a lot from zoverstocks and never get a scratched disc.Same here.
Hi Pfiffi,
Not only do I know the show, I actually know some of the family Eddie Jr. and William Tinkler personally. They sponsor the greatest football team in the world also, Carlisle United. Anyway, Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers is only available on DVD as far as I know.
Sam
Nice, but Carisle United? Never heard of that one. That is because they are so great that they usually pass completely unnoticed.
That is actually my favorite Araki. Miles ahead of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.
Wait, didn't I say that here already? Yes, I did (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,611.msg152275.html#msg152275) (with pictures).

But in Fast 6, i hope they stick more to the original story, with what the movies started with :)
So far I would rank them in the order 1/5/4/2/3 so it seems we both agree the third is the worst and the first is the best. I hope they keep Han in it for a while yet, whilst I bet Lucas Black is sat at home praying for the storyline in the newer ones to get past the third film so he can be in something people have heard of again.
For those that didn't know, the storyline goes 1/2/4/5/3 so not that confusing and it has all been tied together well.
Another one who like this film here ;D

World's Greatest Dad (2009)
Jimmy, I think you would enjoy Jack Frost.Pete maybe, me probably not
we just need to watch them as fun B-movie nothing else).
well, you couldn't get much worse than his earliest movies.BTW Heart of America and Blackwoods he did before House of the Dead are not bad movies
I really like Costner
I agree with most everything you said .. especially the "As much as this was a spectacular directorial debut for Costner, he occassionally struggles with the more emotional scenes as the star".
I really like Costner .. i have never really understood why as his character emotion never really seems to come across. But there you go .. fickle human here :)

Devil (2010)
Overview:
Five seemingly ordinary people become trapped in a skyscraper elevator. Each has a dirty secret, a tainted past. All seems well until the lights go out … and the screaming begins. With no way to escape, the horrific truth dawns that one of them is the Devil … and only then do they realise that very bad things happen for very good reasons. From the mind of M Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs), the director of Quarantine and the writer of 30 Days of Night, Devil is an unforgettably scary movie that will leave you breathless!
My Thoughts:
The first in an intended series of movies called "The Night Chronicles" where all the movies are based on ideas by M. Night Shyamalan, Devil is a cracking little horror. It's short at 76 minutes, but the time is well spent in making sure you don't actually see any of the horror, but feel the tension and atmosphere both inside the elevator and out. The cast gathered all suit their roles well, particularly Jacob Vargas, Bokeem Woodbine, Chris Messina and Caroline Dhavernas - and the script is polished and has enough twists in it to keep your interest. I had previously enjoyed director Dowdle's [REC] remake Quarantine and after viewing Devil, I look forward to his next flick, The Coup, which appears to have gathered an interesting cast. Recommended. 4/5
The cast are well selected, especially Danny Dyer, Laura Harris and Tim McInnernyI always hear Kermode making fun of Dyer and wanted to know who that is. Now I realize I even own a movie with him :slaphead:

Twilight (2008)
Overview:
Twilight, based on the acclaimed novel by Stephenie Meyer, is the highly-anticipated movie of the ultimate forbidden love affair between a vampire and mortal. Boasting a whole host of bright young talent including Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Kristen Stewart (Into The Wild, What Just Happened) and Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down, The O.C.), the screenplay is written by Melissa Rosenberg (Step Up, The O.C.) and directed by the award-winning filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Thirteen).
Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she’s ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance.
Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands--and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal. But he doesn’t have fangs, and he doesn’t drink human blood, as Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for--a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will they do when Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and James (Cam Gigandet), the Cullens’ mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for Bella?
My Thoughts:
Today was my first ever foray into the marmite that is Twilight. It appears to be that some people love it (generally teenage girls known as Twihards) and some people hate it. This is further backed up by the obvious unsubjective voting at imdb, where 16% rank it a 1/10 and another 16% voted it as a 10/10. The rest of the voting is spread quite equally with a bump at the 6/10 mark which is exactly where I would place it. I wasn't expecting much as I don't class a 29-year old male to be the target demographic but I did find it to be an enjoyable enough couple of hours if nothing else. The plot actually flies by and I did enjoy the storyline, no matter how 'daytime tv' it was. The cast are a mixed bag. Kristen Stewart is the best of the bunch whilst Taylor Lautner has the charisma of a dead cat. Still, Catherine Hardwicke manages to draw good enough performances to keep it ticking over. Overall, I would say don't let your preconceptions get in the way of viewing Twilight. It's not as bad as one would think. Rent it. 3/5
The Conversation joins my top rated of 1974. Others from that year I have given 4.5/5:Yep .. 3 great ones there .. I haven't see "Hearts and Minds" yet.

The others:
Looper - 5/5
The Perks of Being a Wallflower - 3.5/5
Centurion (2010)I am not sure what exactly you are referring to, but the conclusion regarding the wolves was needed, I think.
My Thoughts:
Cons:
- I really didn't like the wolves sequence. Just didn't fit well.
Overall:
I have listened to that podcast also a long while ago (I think it was the first "Now Playing" podcast I ever listened to and have been following them since), but even though they have a lot of valid points, they didn't hurt my enjoyment of these movies. We exchanged podcast names in a thread once and I believe your mention of Now Playing brought them to my attention.

Vantage Point (2008)
Overview:
Tense, political thriller that follows an assassination attempt on the president of the United States. While visiting Spain to attend a global summit on terrorism, the American president is shot, causing instant panic and confusion in the watching crowd. Amongst them, tourist Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) has videotaped what he believes to be the gunman, and brings it to the attention of the secret service agents present. The story then unfolds from the perspective of five witnesses, each following events immediately prior to and after the assassination, each one supplying a piece of the puzzle, until the final shocking truth can be revealed.
My Thoughts:
Critics didn't like it and it was shelved for over a year, yet Vantage Point has a very respectable score on IMDB of 6.6 with almost 100,000 votes. I'm not sure why the critics didn't like it though as it's a well made thriller that reminded me a lot of the excellent but short-lived tv show Boomtown which also told the same moments through the eyes of several people. Vantage Point has a great cast assembled putting in above average performances with nobody letting the side down and the set-pieces are very entertaining, especially the car chase. If you want an action thriller that's a little different, I'd recommend this one. 4/5
Skip it. 0.5/5But...
You dont like 'Stallone' Jon?
Of course, there is also a complete set with S1-3 + Christmas special for £9.00 direct from Amazon and I guess you get to remove the 20% tax on that one. Do Amazon UK still ship free to Germany?
My Thoughts::thumbup:
It's not often you get what is essentially a low-key horror movie that has such powerful characters, but Let the Right One In is one of those movies. The children who play the parts of Oskar and Eli are absolutely remarkable and really take the wind out of you throughout with some very powerful scenes. In amongst it is some very slight dark humour which doesn't overpower the other aspects of the movie, and adds to the very dark and gloomy atmosphere well. Director Tomas Alfredson has avoided the fast cut editing we see in the vast majority of current horror movies and instead gone for a lot of distant lingering shots which add to the tension. Even after a fourth viewing, I give this the highest recommendation. 5/5
I have interest in the sequel; maybe good reviews from you guys could change that...? :hmmmm:

He Was a Quiet Man (2007)
Overview:
Disgruntled office worker Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is having another bad day at work. Trapped in his dull cubicle, mostly ignored by his co-workers and bullied by his superiors, Bob daydreams of blowing his office skyscraper sky-high, before ending his own miserable existence. But on this particular day, Bob is transformed from potential killer into accidental hero when another stressed employee beats him to it and opens fire. Unfortunately, going from zero to hero in the blink of an eye has its downside and soon Bob finds himself closer to the edge than ever before.
My Thoughts:
Well that was not at all what I was expecting. Both Christian Slater and Elisha Cuthbert haven't selected the best of roles of late, but in this movie, both excel. Slater plays someone who is a loner with extreme mental issues which unravel quickly, yet never feel overdone, whilst Cuthbert is a colleague he saves from being shot and he forms an unlikely relationship with her whilst she is paralysed. There are some really surreal moments (the talking fish!), that perhaps don't fit quite so well as director Frank A. Cappello had hoped, but overall He Was a Quiet Man is intriguing and interesting to watch with an ending that is pulled off well. I recommend it. 4/5

Empire Records (1995) Region 2 United Kimgdom
Overview:
This comedy cult sensation about the young slackers and dreamers that hang around local record store cranks it up another notch in an awesome Special Fan Edition with 16 minutes of cool added footage not seen in cinemas. In one of the most dynamic song scores ever, tune by Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Cracker, Evan Dando, Better Than Ezra and more set off virtually every scene. If the music isn't enough, check out the stellar cast including Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane and more. This digitally remastered, fully-loaded DVD will rock your world!
My Thoughts:
I picked this one up based on the casting not knowing very much about it. I had heard of it, but not enough to get an interest. Well, it seems I'd been missing out on a very enjoyable little movie. Each character that works in Empire Records is very different and each have their faults which come to light during the movie whilst dealing with the news that the independent record store is getting sold to a chain and will lose it's individuality and family like feel of the workers and their manager. Anthony LaPaglia is excellent as the manager of the store, and Liv Tyler, Rory Cochrane, Robin Tunney, Johnny Whitworth and Renee Zellweger are all great as the store employees. The music selected is very varied and suits each moment perfectly, a must for a film being set in a record shop. Lastly, Empire Records is proof that Renee Zellweger was once a hottie. Recommended. 4/5
although the two hour plus runtime was a bit much. Recommended. 4/5It seems this is Apatow's weak spot. Hs films are mostly two long and there's still plenty of deleted scenes to go on the DVD :slaphead: Comedies should not be that long, period.

Drive Angry (2011)
Overview:
A tongue-in-cheek and hugely enjoyable action blast, full of smoking-hot cars and drop-dead gorgeous women, with Nicolas Cage on top form.
Milton (Cage) is a hardened--albeit dead--criminal who has so far spent his afterlife in hell. Enraged by the murder of his daughter and the imminent sacrifice of his baby granddaughter by a brutal religious cult, Milton breaks out to stop the real evil-doers before they fully unleash hell on Earth.
Aided by a seriously hot and sassy waitress Piper (Amber Heard, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) and driving a cherry red muscle car which Piper liberates from her meat-head ex, Milton is blazing a trail in pursuit of the brutal cult leader. But Milton’s being hounded too – not only by the police but by an enigmatic character known only as The Accountant (a scene-stealing William Fichtner from Entourage and Prison Break), who has been sent by the Devil to bring Milton back to hell.
Milton is mad, bad and hell-bent on achieving his goal. He’s breaking all the rules, but what are they gonna do – not let him back in?
My Thoughts:
Pros:
- Completely over the top action sequences that were a lot of fun. The motel shoot-out was very good.
- Amber Heard was made for this role. Sassy, take-no-crap attitude is perfect. She's good to look at also.
- William Fichtner is great as The Accountant and Billy Burke is also good as the cult leader.
- The film wasn't afraid to be a little unconvential in its direction for a studio film. It's firmly tongue in cheek whilst not becoming a parody of itself.
Cons:
- Although Nicolas Cage isn't terrible here, he is the weak link. One facial expression and quite monotonous line delivery, whilst applicable for some scenes, isn't necessary all the way through.
- The supernatural aspect gets silly and sometimes even lost among all the action.
- The dialogue isn't quite up to the standard you would hope. There are some good segments, but it mainly falls to the wayside.
Overall:
Rent it. 3/5
(http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcROTmxeczpvg-K1VqDnOUcp4RSM7-2WxkYLtk5AFHCgaeAS9POG)Again, I have to agree :) I do enjoy the first Spiderman over the reboot.
Spider-Man (2002)
IMO slightly better than the more recent Garfield/Stone movie, there is a lot to love here. Some great action, some good comic moments, a well put together cast and Kirsten Dunst in a wet t-shirt. Highly recommended. 4.5/5
I don't really understand all the 'reboots' except that it is another way to get money. But then, technically Spider-Man (2002) was a reboot already. Batman Begins was a reboot. Hulk was a reboot.
Agreed! But why not a perfect 5/5? :)

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Overview:
Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.
My Thoughts:
Pros:
- The voice cast is strong and includes Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith.
- The soundtrack is well selected pop music that suits the scenes well.
- It doesn't let up for a second and is frenetic from start to end.
Cons:
- The animation isn't as good as other kids CGI franchises.
- It does get a little repetitive at times.
- The humour isn't as good as you would hope from this genre.
Overall:
There are much better franchises out there like Ice Age, but this is okay to waste some time. Rent it. 3/5
Gotcha bud! ;) And kudos for watching the Tokyo Drift.. I know i should watch it too, since i'm watching the same boxset as you..Just saw preview for Fast & Furious 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_%26_Furious_6) and have to admit that the previews looked like fun. Of course I was seeing A Good Day to Die Hard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Day_to_Die_Hard) so maybe I was just in the mood for series that never die.
But i'm thinking about skipping that one, and jump to number 4. Once was enough for me i guess for the 3rd. :-[

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Overview:
The Umbrella Corporation's deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race's last and only hope, Alice, awakens in the heart of Umbrella's most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex.
My Thoughts:
I think the Resident Evil movies are quite good fun. Completely brainless, but fun nonetheless. I caught the latest entry today in the cinema in 3D and I have to say, the fun has carried on. Whilst the story itself is mediocre at best, it doesn't stop you being blown away by the lightning pace from start to finish and some fantastic special effects. I'm neither for or against 3D but here it worked very well indeed for the most part and added some real depth, though some of the 3D bits were a bit amiss in the fight scenes. I really enjoyed having Michelle Rodriguez back, and of course Milla and Sienna were both present too. The style has changed for the better IMO, with some nice attempts at giving it a videogame feel at times and the ending has left me wanting more with the awesome cliffhanger. Overall, it was a good laugh, and I enjoyed it. Recommended, but for RE fans ONLY. 3.5/5
I just picked up a copy of this from a closing BlockBuster ... glad i got it cheap :) I'll watch it in the next couple of days and see if we concur

Yeah, I can't wait for Worlds End - the final part of the Cornetto trilogy. As a pairing I'd say Paul is the worst thing they've done and yet it's still very very good!Really :o How can that be with quips like Lorenzo Doyle?

It's definately not for everyone but if you enjoy movies like The Stuff or CHUD then it is worth adding to your collection. 3.5/5I saw Dead Heat in the cinema at the Fantasy Film Festival in Germany many years ago. I loved it at fist viewing and have seen it again once or twice since then.
Thanks. I'll think about it, but am not even sure where I could get Brazilian releases,,,
And although Superman II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_II) was reportedly filmed at the same time, I didn't like the second one as much.
And III and IV were, to my way of thinking .. bad. The newer reboot, Superman Return (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_Returns) wasn't really that bad. Not oscar material :) but hey ... so few things are. Not sure about the next one. I think the real problem is with Superman period. New good, too clean. Most people like their heroes flawed.Personally I am really excited about the next movie. It has the potential to be really great.

The TT is the world renowned motorcycle racing event held every year on the Isle of Wight, England's largest island.
I guess you're not a fan of the Isle of Man TT races ;)
The cast is the poorest of the franchise. Although Liliana Komorowska, Valérie Valois and Steve Parrish are just about passable as the lead charactersSorry but you are wrong... Valerie Valois is a great actress (acting in a different language isn't an easy thing to do) and she was at the beginning of her career. Also Daniel Pilon is an accomplished French Canadian actor who had worked for years in many US soap and was never out of work here before he did decide to take less works because of his age (he had never disowned his French Canadian roots contrary to some other getting very small success in France).
A generous 2.5/5 for the first movie, a 1/5 for the second.
Yeah ... this is a good fun movie. I like Rosie O'Donnell in this too. I know she can be a polarizing figure ... but here just good fun.
Ah, after both yours and Marie's review of FF. I cant wait for it! Wich one is your favorite so far?

Scream 4 (2011)
Overview:
In Scream 4, Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (played by Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghost Face, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.
My Thoughts:
It has been eleven years since Scream 3 and Sidney has released her own book whilst Gale and Dewey have been married for a decade with him now Sheriff and her trying to write a novel. With them all back in Woodsboro on the anniversary of the events from the first movie it's obvious there is a need for someone dressed as Ghostface to be killing again. With another great cast including Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere and Anthony Anderson and some solid writing, Scream 4 is another fun entry into the series. A lot of nods to more recent horror movies like the Saw franchise and filled with plenty of great dialogue poking fun at genre cliches, I have to recommend it to fans of the series. 3.5/5
Thanks Tom. Seems the only blu-rays for them are USA but over the customs limit. I've put a low price watch on them and will pick them up if they ever get stupidly cheap (I'm unsure about them now after this one).

I think I might blind buy at £6.25
Edge of Darkness (2010)I have to agree with this being one of his best performances in a long time. It is interesting to me how well he does in films like this where the *hero* is a very stressful person. Like his job in "Payback". It is also interesting that he seems to carry this great stress/tension in his real life as seen in some of his behavior.
Okay, so it isn't quite as good as the original mini-series (also directed by Martin Campbell), but this is certainly a very solid thriller and Mel Gibson puts in his best performance in years. There are some brutal moments, the special effects are top notch, and the storyline is intriguing. Worth buying.
