Young Sherlock Holmes, a review by Dragonfire

Young Sherlock Holmes

My Thoughts

I'm not sure when I first heard about this movie, though I think the first time I really got interested was after it was mentioned in an episode of Big Bang Theory.  Then I found out when watching A Pixar Story that Pixar did effects for the movie, and that got me even more interested in seeing it.  So when I spotted the DVD at Wal-Mart for only $5, I grabbed it.  I'm really glad I got it.

I have been watching more Sherlock Holmes movies in the last few months and I really like the character.  I really liked this variation, showing how Sherlock and Watson might have been when they were younger.  I know it doesn't fit in with the stories, but that's ok for me.  It is a very entertaining, fun movie and I think the way the characters of Sherlock and Watson act remain true to the essence of the characters.  One thing even seems to be a bit of a possible explanation for why Sherlock doesn't get married later in life.  The mystery is decent and while it isn't that difficult to figure out, there are still one or two surprises and some suspense at times.  The former professor character is very interesting.  He is a bit eccentric and has all sorts of experiments going on..something that Sherlock does later in life.

Pixar geek that I am, I got extremely excited when I saw Pixar and Lasseter in the credits for the special effects.

I really enjoyed this one.  It is a fun, entertaining movie that is definitely worth watching.

I did post a review on Epinions a few days ago if anyone would like to take a look at that.

Die Hard, a review by Dragonfire

Die Hard
High above the city of L.A. a team of terrorists has seized a building, taken hostages, and declared war. But one man has managed to escape detection...an off-duty cop. He's alone...tired...and the only chance anyone has.

Bruce Willis stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). But as McClane waits for his wife's office party to break up, terrorists take control of the building. While the terrorist leader, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his savage henchman (Alexander Godunov) round up hostages, McClane slips away unnoticed. Armed with only a service revolver and his cunning, McClane launches his own one-man war. A crackling thriller from beginning to end, DIE HARD explodes with heart-stopping suspense.

I love this movie and think it is one of the best action movies.  John McClane is a wonderful character who seems more realistic than characters in other action movies even when he does unbelievable things.  He has some issues, but he deals with the situation he ends up in because no else is there to do.  He could have tried to find somewhere in the building to hide and hope the cops would come.  Instead he decides to tackle the problem himself, with only his handgun while wearing no shoes.  He gets hurt, but he keeps going because someone has to deal with the terrorists.  The action is done well, though it isn't the most believable at times.  There is no way that someone could survive what John does, but that doesn't bother me.

Hans Grubber is the best villain from the Die Hard movies.  He's one of the best movie villains ever.  He tends to stay calm, showing only mild irritation at first because John is delaying some of his plans.  Hans gets more and more annoyed with John as the movie progress.  Hans acts a bit more refined and he's as intelligent as he is deadly.  Alan Rickman is absolutely wonderful in the part.  He's so good at playing bad guys, but I think Hans is the best.  This, along with his performances as Snape in the Potter movies, are my favorite performances by him.

This is a well done action movie that has held up well and definitely deserves to be watched.

I did get a review  posted on Epinions a few years ago.

Smallville: The Complete Third Season, a review by addicted2dvd

Smallville: The Complete Third Season (2003/United States)

Everyone has a future. Clark Kent has a destiny - if he's willing to accept and able to master all the awesome powers and responsibilities that come with it.

The fascinating reinterpretation of Superman mythology and its classic characters continues in an event-packed 22-episode Season 3 that includes Clark's embracing of his dark side... and the devil's bargain Jonathan makes with Jor-El to rescue his son. Other highlights: Perry White and villainous Morgan Edge debut in the series. Clark hones a sensational new power. Chloe lets slip an intriguing reference to someone named Lois Lane. And the secret of Clark's true indentity burdens Pete, obsesses Lex and drives a wedge between Lana and Clark. The challenges of today shape tomorrow as never before in Smallville.

My Thoughts:
Just finished season 3. Still very much enjoying watching this series again. We did indeed see Clark get his super hearing this season. We also got another episode with Christopher Reeve. I am now about to pop in the first disc of Season 4! I can't believe I am already up to the season that introduces Lois Lane.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
