HiDef Media / Sony's Toho Godzilla Collection
« on: May 08, 2014, 07:37:30 PM »
I got a promo e-mail from Sony for their Toho Godzilla 60th Anniversary Collection. Pity it seems to be US only but there are apparently 4 Blu-rays each with 2 films on them.

E-mail image page here

I seem to recall that someone on here was into these but I can't find any supporting links, not that I've tried that hard.

Edited to remove e-mail link as it was a full copy of the e-mail I received including my e-mail address rather than a link to the details or generic copy.

The Collector's Place / Ghibli Steelbooks
« on: September 28, 2013, 07:30:00 PM »
I don't know if there any collectors of steelbook cases here but StudioCanal UK are to release 4 of the Studio Ghibli titles in steelbooks later this year. Full details on Blu-ray.com here.

The titles in question are My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I would imagine that these will be Region B locked as per their usual practice.

Online Stores / Play.com to close retail operations
« on: January 10, 2013, 11:22:21 AM »
Play.com are apparently closing their retail operations in March according to this report here, they will concentrate on their Marketplace operations.

A pity as I've been a customer of theirs via the original Play247 through Playusa to the current incarnation, although their prices have been less competetive in the past couple of years so fewer orders were placed with them.

Movie Reviews / The Skin I Live In
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:48:46 PM »
I went to see this, the latest film from director Pedro Almodóvar, yesterday afternoon.

Synopsis
The Skin I Live In is a typically surreal and downright strange "horror film without screams" from the master of Spanish cinema, Pedro Almodóvar. A plastic surgeon, with many a skeleton in his closet, has invented a new type of plastic human "skin" that cannot be burned. Having tested it on mice, he decides to hold a woman captive so that he can try it out on her. When his partner in crime's deviant son stops by while he's away, the lid is about to be violently lifted on this dark and disturbing world.

Whilst Almodóvar is not to everyone's tastes I have enjoyed some of his films, according to DVDP I have 15 of his films. This film stars one of his mainstays Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon who is experimenting with a new skin for burn victims. Unbeknownst to his colleagues he has already been experimenting with a human subject. This film covers the events that occur after he is asked to stop his experiments and also goes back to show why he started down the path of looking for a better human skin. I found this to be a very enjoyable film, the best I've seen in a cinema this year and possibly the best I've seen all year in any format.

The Collector's Place / Multiple Dip and Multiple Format
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:17:50 PM »
I said elsewhere I would create this after seeing that I had dipped 4 times for the Alien Tetralogy in discs that could be catalogued in DVD Profiler.

I'm just wondering how many other people multiple dip whether in one format or across formats.

I''l start with the 3 titles that I have multi-dipped the most:-

Alien: 9 dips
 - on VHS 4 times in 3 different versions - original release in P&S mono which cost around £45.00, the re-issue in hi-fi stereo, the re-issue in widescreen and as part of a facehugger box set
 - on US Laserdisc in Constant Angular Velocity which gave super freeze-frame but only allowed 30mins a side of each disc so this was over 6 sides or 3 discs
 - on DVD 3 times in the R1 and R2 Legacy Box Sets and the R2 Quadrilogy Box Set
 - and now on Blu-ray in the Anthology Box Set

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: 9 dips
 - on VHS 5 times in 4 different versions - original release in P&S mono, the re-issue in hi-fi stereo, a special Collector's Edition, the re-issue in widescreen as part of 2 different Box Sets
 - on US Laserdisc in Constant Linear Velocity which gave 60mins a side of each disc so this was over 3 sides or 2 discs
 - on DVD 2 times in the R1 Director's Edition and the R2 Special Edition in The Movies Box Set
 - and on Blu-ray in the The Legends of the Final Frontier Box Set

Star Wars IV: 8 dips
 - on VHS 5 times in 4 different versions - original release in P&S stereo, the re-issue in widescreen, remastered edition, THX remastered edition and the Special Edition in the Star Wars Trilogy Box Set
 - on US Laserdisc in Constant Angular Velocity as part of Star Wars - The Definitive Edition Box Set
 - on UK Laserdisc in Constant Angular Velocity as part of Star Wars The Special Edition Box Set
 - on DVD 2 times in the R2 Trilogy Box Set and the R2 Limited Edition

General / Cat in Bin - Woman Charged
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:51:30 PM »
A woman from Coventry who was filmed dumping a cat in a wheelie bin has
been charged with animal cruelty offences.

Mary Bale, of St Michael's Road, has been charged with causing
unnecessary suffering to a cat and of not providing the animal with a
suitable environment.

The incident happened in August and the RSPCA said it was taking the
45-year-old to court under the Animal Welfare Act of 2006.

She is due to appear before Coventry Magistrates Court on 19 October.

The RSPCA said it had served Ms Bale with a court summons on Sunday.
