The fourth wall is a term describing the invisible barrier between an audience and the story. I bet it was coined in theatre. Think of when you watch a sitcom, normally set in a room where you can see three physical walls. Because you're suspending disbelief, you naturally assume the fourth is there, right in front of you. If a character in the story looks at or speaks to the audience directly, they are said to have broken the fourth wall. So...
