I picked this TV series because I recently bought season 1  - which was televised in 1975 (hint!)

I'm afraid I don't know who Benny or Crossroads are  so I don't get the joke. I looked up Crossroads in DVDP - there are several - which do you mean?

Barney Miller?

It was a British soap opera in the 70s and 80s, set in a motel (hence the name), resurrected briefly a few years ago. Benny was a favourite character of many; he was a bit slow and daft, recognisable by his hat which he never took off. It was cheesy rubbish even in it's heyday.
