Well, she certainly isn't Nina Simone and I admit I like her more as an actress than as a singer.

Have you ever heard the original? It was used on the Mafia I soundtrack and I hadn't realised how sinister it was!

I don't think I have and Youtube unfortunately blocks the one you embedded.

The sods! Does the "Watch on YouTube" link below the image work? If not, Search for Screamin' Jay Hawkins. There are a couple of videos from the 70s I'm guessing where he did it live, but for full effect, look for an audio only one. The original recording has some bite...

Speaking of song from Mafia, I love the song Chow Mein by the Gaylords that's in Mafia 2. It's crazy catchy!

Najemikon

 Yeah! I like that one too.

No more chow mein yakamein bean sprout
No more lychee nut wonton soup
No more Louie bring a bowl of suey
No more kissing in the yellow booth

Critter

You call that a soup song?

This is a soup song!

It's not UK-only though, because I can see it. Must be a block in Germany...

I know the original for many, many years already. heck, I knew it before I properly liked music :headslap: It always had "that certain something".

Nina Simone is awesome. She had that hit in Germany many years ago (in the 80's or early 90's...?), which I kinda liked. Then the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair used her song Sinnerman, which prompted me to buy a Best Of collection. Great stuff.

Check it out, it's brilliant and hilarious. Nothing but the worst movies of all time.

My gosh! For having been part of a marching band when I was younger... that must've been HELL to get right!!
(lower the volume - it's recorded a bit loud)

Impressive!

Now let's get Christmassy. Here in the UK, we do seem to get some excellent adverts. We still get mostly terrible ones, but at this time of year the specials start rolling out...

John Lewis (department store) really manage to capture the meaning of Christmas. Here's last years:

And this years:

Marks and Spencer's (also a department store) always have high profile ads with a mix of regular models and guest celebs, led by Twiggy. Their Chrimbo one this year features Peter Kay.  ;D But my fave bit is... oooh, about 35 seconds in...

Dragonfire

Holy cow ... that is very impressive for the marching band.  Wow.  I just heard a little on the news yesterday - from the other room - and that band was mentioned...maybe it was about that.

I love that Marks and Spencer ad Jon! Especially Twiggy. I'm actually surprised you like it, since it's basically a homage to many musicals. I saw a bit of Chicago in there amongst others. Not to mention music video tributes to the likes of Beyonce, Madonna and Britney Spears. Hell the whole ad was kind of like watching an episode of Glee, but handled very well.

Hey, I like musical performances, just not in the context of using them to tell a story! Plus, it's just a very happy advert. Do a search on YouTube and you'll find loads more from M&S, I'm sure.

Twiggy has been doing them for a couple of years and it used to be a selection of regular models, including the phenomenal NoƩmie Lenoir. Sadly, she attempted suicide and so I haven't seen her since. That seems to be about the time more celebs came in. In this one, aside from Peter Kay who is one of our very best stand-up comedians, there is Danni Minogue (no you can't have her back. She's ours now! :P) and VV Brown. She's a fascinating singer who never quite made the big-time, so I'm glad she's keeping her profile up.
