It's a prequel, so maybe someone is appropriate experience:

George Lucas

It is only a "prequel" in the film world.  "The Hobbit" was written by Tolkien long before the "Lord of the Rings".

I'd be shocked if Lucas were interested.  I'm not sure he'd do it justice.

Achim

Oh, let's hope he's not interested... I was only kidding.

Najemikon

can't... breathe... :-X

Aja is a good idea, I like that. Gilliam? Not so sure. His films are wonderful and visual, but there's a haphazard nature I don't think would suit.

That and the guy's cursed

Najemikon

True! The day he turns a movie in on time, under budget and with no disasters, is the day he'll have made a boring film...

Najemikon

I guessed he might start putting feelers out, but I really wish it was someone else, if only to create another identity. He did a marvellous job on the trilogy and that shouldn't be undermined, but it had a hell of a lot of momentum that covered up a fair few flaws and short-cuts. The Hobbit needs to be expanded whereas LotR needed reducing; someone like Del Toro would have interpreted it beautifully.

If he's willing to go without the splatter of his usual films, I suggest Alexandre Aja. The man has a great eye.

True, but keep him far, far, far away from the script.

Aja can't end a movie to save his life.

But, damn, his stuff sure is pretty to look at.

That's ironic considering the trouble Jackson had at the end of Return!

Sorry Marie, but I beat you to the punch. Look up about six posts ago.  ;)

Alien Redrum

How long before LotR did the Hobbit take place?

I'm wondering who would play Bilbo, because Ian Holm is like 100 years old.

Dragonfire

oops.  Somehow I missed seeing that.
