Just found something else..looks like Jackson is in talks to direct now.  But of course everything will still be hung up because of the MGM mess.

I found the hobbits to be the most annoying part of the LotR movies, so I guess I don't.

I watched the first one in the cinema but I had trouble staying awake (it was late, we had bad seats and I was really tired). Of what I remembered of the movie it was boring. Thus I never got around to watch the others. I tried once with the second one, but turned it off after ten minutes. I will give them a chance again, when the extended editions are out on Blu-ray and on bargain.

That's because Jackson made Pippin look like a complete fool, which, if you read the book, he was not. He was mischievous, but not stupid. And I've always felt that Elijah Wood, resembles what a Hobbit would look like, but he just didn't have the acting chops to pull off the character. He made Frodo appear whiny and petulant. Sean Astin was also miscast. The only one to hit the mark was Dominic Monaghan.

I quite liked Aston's interpretation of Sam, but much as I enjoy the films, Elijah Wood sums up everything wrong. He plays the role with wide-eyed naive awe at everything he sees and I think that's how Peter Jackson directed the trilogy. Therefore there is little subtlety, no interpretation of the book (actors just read it out, basically) and a resolve to include stuff that just doesn't work. Walking trees do not good cinema make!

Still, they are magnificent and he pulled off a Herculean task to get them made. I doubt any other version would have been so good.

Some set photos and a behind the scenes look from the ugliest and most butt-kissing movie website ever:
