In Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, a novelist who accepts a job as caretaker of a seasonal resort in the Rockies. To pass the time during the cold, snowy off-season, he starts to write what he dreams will be his breakout literary novel. Instead, he slips slowly into insanity as the seclusion of the resort, and a spirit from the past gnaw at his slipping grip on reality.
