Movie Reviews / Batman V Superman .. Really??
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:01:43 PM »
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice I haven't seen this mentioned yet so thought I would put in a quick  ... ???REALLY??? Ben "I can't act" Aflack (sic) again.  Is he to superheros what Summer Glau is to SciFi?  (poor ole summer).  Superman has always been a problem for me.  Except for krytonite (all sorts of colors) and others from Krypton .. what does Superman have to be afraid of?  And what chance does Batman against him (again especially someone like ben aflack .. he does better as a duck).  Sure this might draw some skepticism .. will be happy to discuss but just wondering WTH

TV Series / True Detective (hbo)
« on: January 17, 2014, 06:10:55 PM »
Caught the first episode of True Detective and found it very good.  Both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are great together.  And I like the concept where each season (season 1 will have 8 eps) deals with different storyline and characters (stars).  This will keep the show from becoming like ... well ... Bones :).

Its flavor reminds me of several UK shows (names of which I can't remember right now) and i love its grittiness.  If you get a chance to watch it AND you like 'crime drama' with really damaged characters .. do.

TV Series / Almost Human
« on: November 21, 2013, 06:23:54 PM »
There is a new series on fox called Almost Human and comes to us from Bad Robot Productions which is a very good thing.

The first episode was pretty good.  The use of CGI was more for the cityscapes and some action shots but the script and performances were very good.  The Second episode was also good but it was the ending which really got me.  It dealt with putting and android down and gave me a feeling similar to Tears in the Rain.  Not exactly the same and really .. compared to possibly Rutger Hauer's finest performance this was lacking ... but on its own it was pretty powerful.  Those of use who love SciFi, especially speculative SciFi, recognize the dilemma faced.  Very good episode

Movies / The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
« on: August 23, 2013, 04:06:16 AM »

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones from the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare was a very good take on the first book.  There were of course some bits not in the book .. or changed but the flavor was there (which is what I look for).

The actors:
  • Lily Collins
  • Jamie Campbell Bower
  • Robert Sheehan
  • Kevin Zegers
  • Lena Headey
  • Kevin Durand
  • Aidan Turner
  • Jemima West
  • Godfrey Gao
  • C. C. H. Pounder
  • Jared Harris
  • Jonathan Rhys Meyers

were mainly new to me (with the exception of C. C. H. Pounder, Kevin Durand and Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and all were very good in their roles.

The visuals are very very good (lots of cgi so take that into consideration).  The story does take a bit to get into as there are some complexities.  If there is a weak point it is the music.  Not that the majority of the music isn't very good ... or taken separately the songs would be good ... but to my taste many of the songs gave the film a feeling of something developed for 'The CW' (tv network).  It gave it a feeling of 'Roswell' or any other *teen angst* driven show.

Having said that I will be seeing it again and i really hope they do the other 2 books.  It wont be a phenom like "Twilight" but to my taste the books and film are a little better.

I just started watching War of the Worlds which I hadn't seen for a very very long time.  I had had much of it on VHS but again don't remember even watching it.  I had gotten the dvds a couple of years ago when the second season came out but ..

So I poked Disc 1 in the drive and settled down for a great watch and oh my ... was it really this bad when it was first shown in '88?  Not only is the acting bad .. the dialog is very funny .. which I don't think they were going for.  There is even a scene in the first ep where it is an outdoor scene, night, outside of a house.  There are a couple of fires going.  As the actors walk by in front of the fire their shadows cast against the fire    Now I am not saying it is impossible ... "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio ... " but really.

I might not get through may eps of this series.  Just put a sticky on it of which eps I watched so i know better next time <G>.

So what shows have you watched that you have been disappointed in?

General / Thoughts on Ratings ...
« on: July 19, 2013, 09:29:50 PM »
I am wondering if you all rate a film/series/episode by a single criteria or does it depend more on when/where/who etc.  Media etc??

For example I just posted a *review* of my recent purchase/watch of "The Lone Ranger".  I gave it 4 stars because I really find it captivating (probably from my history etc) and think it is a great representation of the era it was created.

Now I am wondering about that rating ...  for example in my collection I have also rated "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), "1408" and "2010: The Year We Make Contact" also as 4 stars.  But of course 'The Lone Ranger' is not as well crafted as these other films so rating??  Although I think I have answered my own question while writing this, meaning each film etc really needs to be evaluated on its own taking all things into consideration, I was/still am wondering how you rate yours?

Thanks

Movies / Steve McQueen - Your thoughts on his films
« on: June 25, 2013, 05:40:25 PM »
I recently got a '4 fil favorites' of Steve McQueen to fill in a couple of films that I didn't have.  It contains The Hunter, Papillion, Bullitt and Nevada Smith.

In watching these and going back to some of the other ones I have I did start to notice that many of his films are really poor production quality .. almost a 'tv show' quality about them.  This including everything from supporting actors, sets, filming to direction and editing.

Don't get me wrong ... I really enjoy most all of Steve McQueen's work.  With favorites including Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, Nevada Smith and of course his character/roll in The Great Escape and The Sand Pebbles.  Of course there are others but these are more my picks of better overall fims.

But if you look at The Thomas Crown Affair and look at the production quality  or even The Hunter you will see what I am talking about.

So my question is ... what are your thoughts on Steve McQueen.  His performances, films and their qualities.

« on: June 02, 2013, 07:44:12 PM »
Sometime 'recently' they have changed their shipping rate to 3.98.  THIS is just a ripoff as every time i had to send something back it was alway much less than their previous 2.98.

So I am looking for good sources for used dvd,blu-ray and even cds.  Let me know if you have a good source

Thanks

Movies / Lincoln (2012)
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:50:47 AM »
I just got the chance to see Lincoln and wanted to read what others had thought about this film (i will review it more when the dvd comes out).  I looked in this part of the forum and couldn't find it.  Thinking I just missed it (i still think i missed it) I Searched the site and I can't find it anywhere.  Is this possible?  Is it really true that this film about one of the truly great and defining characters in US history had not been reviewed .. or even brought up.  <sigh>

So here is a simple 20 second review ... Wow, all facets of this film hit the mark for me.  From the sad/melancholy that he is reported to have suffered from to the 'bat shit crazy' wife he loved, to the brutality of the Civil War ... this film showed up well.  Bravo to Steven Spielberg for not going over the top which he is more likely to do.

But a special bravo goes to Daniel Day-Lewis who brought to life this giant of a character with simplicity.  The entire cast was brilliant but Daniel Day-Lewis's performance brings back thoughts of his performance in In the Name of the Father.

Again ... a simple ... Wow

TV Series / Ripper Street (BBC 2012-)
« on: February 04, 2013, 05:45:30 PM »
Anyone else watching Ripper Street on BBC  America?

It is very good drama, set in Whitechappel in the late 1800's,  and I wonder if others here are watching.  What are your thoughts.  The sets, filming and drama is very similar to the BBC America show that also started last year, Copper though it is set in Boston around the same time.

Movie Reviews / The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
« on: February 02, 2013, 12:24:53 AM »
I just got out of the theater, watching Warm Bodies:clap:, and saw several good previews.  The best of them was for the film The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones.  It is from the series The Mortal Instruments written by Cassandra Clare.

First the book series.   I found this series a very good read.  Although there are currently 5 books in the series, i have only read the first 3 (my daughter read the other 2 and also like them) and found them inventive.   Although noted as a 'juvenile' series I don't really see it that way.  I don't really have plans to read the other books as for me it was well done after the original trilogy.

Now the movie.  Although I have only seen the Trailer, everything about it appears to be the way I read the book.  This could be a very good film.   Not teen heartthrob like "Twilight" and with more edge than "Hunger Games".

Scheduled release Aug 23, 2013.

Movies / Warm Bodies (2013)
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:43:04 PM »
Based on the book Warm Bodies, originally an e-book, this film tells the story of 'R', played by Nicholas Hoult, a simple zombie boy and the changes in him driving back to human.  With a strange meeting between 'R' and his future love interest Julie, played by Teresa Palmer meet when 'R's zombie brothers run into Julie's team of scavengers and 'R's group kill and eat the brains of all of Julies group with the exception of Julie and her friend, Nora played by Analeigh Tipton who is hiding.

It is, at the heart, a love story.  It is a great take on the zombie genre.  Fun new ideas.  There might be a few slow parts but that is what happens when not all the film is action rockem sockem robots.

Overall this is a great film.  I will probably go see it again in the theater and will be sure to pick up the dvd.   Hoping someone else here sees this one so we can discuss it.
