Cathy's Curse, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Cathy's Curse (1977)

Genre: Horror
Director: Eddy Matalon
Rating: R
Length: 1h21
Video: Widescreen
Audio: English
Subtitles: None

Stars:
Alan Scarfe
Beverley Murray
Randi Allen
Dorothy Davis
Mary Morter

Plot:
After a terrible car accident twenty years ago killed his father and sister, a man returns to his family home with his wife and daughter. The daughter takes up residence in her deceased aunt's room and, after finding some of her possessions, becomes possessed by her spirit. Soon strange happenings and mysteriouss deaths begin to occur in the household as the possessed girl lashes out at those around her.

My Thoughts:
A very forgetable horror movie made with French Canadian money, yes it's a movie from my province but don't search for a French Canadian actor in it. The acting is really poor, one of the actor (Alan Scarfe) had a lot of credit after this and I really hope that his acting goes better. The sad thing is that with a better script this movie could have been better, I don't say original since it's a cheap Exorcist ripoff but better. The director will make a year later the movie "Blackout" who is a better exemple of a good Canadian product. Finally this print is certainly one of the worst I've seen : this is a false widescreen (the top and the bottom of the film are cut), the colours are fade, a lot of ghost image are present and the soundtrack is really noisy (a strange distorsion is always present). I've taken a screen capture to show you how the picture is bad.

the majority of the time this is worse than that

Casi Casi, a review by Danae Cassandra

Where Are We:  Puerto RicoWhat We Watched

Casi CasiOverview:
In the spirit of Mean Girls and Election comes a hilarious new high school romp.  Emilio is a typical teenager with typical teenage problems.  He's got a crush on Jacklynne, the most popular girl in school, and has decided to run for Student Council President to win her affection.  There's only one problem: she's decided to run against him!  As the campaign mounts and tensions rise, Emilio devises a plan that could easily backfire if his diabolical principal founds out about it.

My Thoughts:
Casi Casi was a cute, funny teen film, about a boy's crush on the pretty, popular girl and the lengths that his friends go to in helping him try to win her heart.  It's also - in fact, primarily - about the value of real friends, friends who are there for you when you need them, and not overlooking what's right in front of you.  It's a really funny film, both of us laughed multiple times at what was going on.

It's a low budget film, most of the actors are amateurs and this was the first time making a film for the directors.  Because of that, it's about the story - basically a caper of how Emilio is going to rig the election for Jacklynne - and about the characters.  Each of Emilio's friends is a unique individual, very natural and believable.  It was easy to suspend disbelief and just get into the story.  Sure, they wouldn't get away with it in real life, but it totally works in the film.

Overall, a cute, fun film suitable for just about anybody.

Overall: 3/5

Birthday Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4
A New Man
At Buffy's 19th birthday party, Giles has a realization. He is an unemployed, middle-aged man hanging around with a bunch of teenagers. He feels even worse when he finds out that he is the only one who doesn't know about Riley and the Initiative. Feeling useless and insecure, he runs into Ethan Rayne, but the confrontation ends in drinks at the local pub rather than the usual fisticuffs. The next morning, Giles looks in the mirror and sees a massive Fyarl demon looking back at him.

My Thoughts:
This has never been one of my favorite episodes. I would say it is somewhere between fair and good. For one thing I never liked the character of Ethan Rayne. He is one character that really bored me. Thankfully you only see him a couple times throughout the series. Though it was fun to see Giles as a demon unable to communicate with the gang.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
