Road to Singapore, a review by Danae Cassandra

Road to Singapore
Year of Release: 1940
Directed By: Victor Schertzinger
Starring: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Musical

Overview:Road to SingaporeSingapore was the initial entry in the legendary Hope-Crosby-Lamour Road series that delighted movie goers for over 20 fun-filled years.

My Thoughts:
This is a fun bit of funny, escapist fluff.  Our heroes, two chaps looking for nothing but good times, run away from marriage, work and high society to live as island bums.  There they meet a girl who just might make them change their bachelor ways, if only she didn't make them both feel that way.  The jokes are funny, and Crosby and Hope have great chemistry together and their banter is clever.  Lamour works well with both of them, and is probably about as believably exotic as they were going to cast in 1940.  It feels like there are a lot of songs for the short runtime, but other than that, no complaints.  If you're looking for an amusing little film, and you like old movies, Bing Crosby and/or Bob Hope, this isn't a bad choice.

Bechdel Test: Fail

Overall: 3/5

Red, a review by Dragonfire

I know I'm behind on posting about this one..and the other movies I've been watching.  I'm going to try to get caught up ...or at least not as far behind.

Red

This one is based on a comic book series that only lasted for a few issues...3 or 6 I think.  I haven't read the comic books, so I don't know what has been changed for the movie.  It follows Frank, a retired CIA agent and shows how he is dealing with life now that he is retired.  Things get interesting once it is clear that someone is trying to kill him.

The action starts fairly early in Red and keeps popping up throughout the movie.  There are explosions and several shoot outs.  The action is a bit over the top and not believable, but it still manages to work for the movie.  And some of the action scenes are just cool.  A bit of humor does turn up throughout the movie and it blends in well with what is going on.

The characters are interesting, though they aren't the most developed.  The cast does really well with their parts.  Frank isn't that different from other parts that Bruce Willis has played, but I still enjoyed the character.  I loved Helen Mirren as Victoria, a former MI6 agent who is deadly with a gun.

Red is entertaining, though I can see it not appealing to some people.

I did get a longer review posted on Epinions after seeing it in the theater.

Plot:
Spin City is a smart, sophisticated ABC sitcom about the behind-the-scenes workings of City Hall in the biggest city in America. Workaholic Mike Flaherty (Michael J. Fox) is the Deputy Mayor of New York City, serving as Mayor Randall Winston's (Barry Bostwick, Rocky Horror Picture Show) key strategist and much-needed handler.

Mike runs the city with the help of his oddball staff: an anxious and insecure press secretary (Richard Kind, Mad About You); a sexist, boorish chief of staff (Alan Ruck, Ferris Bueller's Day Off); an impeccably groomed gay activist running minority affairs (Michael Boatman, Arliss); a sharp and efficient, man-crazy accountant (Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights); and an idealistic young speechwriter (Alexander Chaplin). Like Mike, they are all professionally capable but personally challenged.

Spin City was an immediate hit when it debuted in 1996. The series reunited Fox with Family Ties executive producer and creator Gary David Goldberg and proved that the magic of their creative partnership was enduring.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed watching this first season of Spin City. The actors were seemingly comfortable in their roles fast and developed great group dynamics.
