Welcome to the horrifying Horror Mansion Survival Game.
:readthis:This is a PM and Rules-intensive game, so please read carefully.:readthis:
You have been selected to explore the Horror Mansion. There is only one way out, so you will have to choose your path carefully. To stop you from getting out of the mansion alive, one of you will be selected as The Killer, and he/she will stop at nothing to kill you all before you can make it to safety.
- 1. The object of the game is to leave the mansion alive.
- 2. First, all of you will receive a PM from me and you will have to answer it if you want to play.
- 3. If for some reason you think you will be too busy to play or you will be going out for the next few days, please confirm you will not be able to play.
- 4. After all of you have been confirmed to play, I will choose a Killer and then I will post who are the characters in the game, then we will begin.
- 5. If for some reason I forget to add some of you, and you want to play, you may join in at any time by sending me a PM indicating you want in.
- 6. I will choose at random one of you to play The Killer. The Killer is ONLY allowed to contact me by PM. He/she is not allowed to PM any of his victims.
- 7. In order to survive the game you will have to choose a location in the mansion to hide and answer movie trivia questions to advance. In total there are 20 locations to hide. The first 3 are available at the beginning of the game, but you will have to unlock the remaining in order to make it out alive.
- 8. Multiple persons can be at one same location.
- 9. To advance through the locations, I will PM each of you indicating which are the available locations to you and you will PM back with the answer. The same goes for The Killer; he/she will choose a location ONLY when I PM him/her. The Killer has the advantage of moving first.
- 10. The Killer is hiding at one of these locations. If you move to a location where The Killer is, you have a chance of fighting back. You will have to answer correctly a movie trivia question to escape The Killer.
- 11. If you answer correctly, you will be given a key. With the key, you have the choice of advancing further through the house. If you answer incorrectly, the killer will come up with a bloody and perverse death of his/her choice for you and you no longer will be able to play.
- 12. There is only ONE way out of the house. The only ones who know the way out are The Killer and me.
- 13. The Killer can provide the trivia questions if he/she likes, but if he/she cannot think of one, I will come up with the question and I will PM the targeted victim with the question. NOTE: The killer CANNOT PM the victim with the question.
- 14. If two or more people are in one same location where The Killer is, I will PM The Killer for him/her to choose the victim.
- 15. If two or more people are in one same location where The Killer is, and The Killer is butchering one of you, the remaining people can choose to go back to any of the previous locations or choose to face The Killer.
- 16. In the mansion, the last rooms are two. Only of ONE these has the door the get out of the mansion. The Killer does not have access to the last two rooms.
- 17. The last two rooms are very tricky. If you access the room which does not hold the escape door, you will GO BACK to the beginning of the mansion.
- 18. If you access the room with the way out, you will have to answer correctly 5 questions in order to escape. If you succeed, you will be alive and well and will win 10 points. If you answer wrong 3 or more questions, you will be forced to go back to a previous room, thus becoming a potential victim for The Killer. If you answer correctly 3 or more questions you will remain in the same room, until you get the 5 questions right. Remember that as long as you remain in the room with the way out, The Killer cannot touch you. The ONLY way to escape is to answer correctly the 5 questions.
- 19. If the killer succeeds in killing all of you, he/she will win 10 points.
- 20. If any of you survived the challenge, you will host the next round.
UPDATE - NEW RULE:
- 21. To access some of the rooms, you will need a special key. There are two ways to obtain this key. One is to confront the Killer and respond correctly to a trivia question, the other is to FIND the hidden key. The key is hidden somewhere in ONE of the rooms. If you never go to the room with the key, the only way to get it is from The Killer. If you find a room that is locked, you will need to go back to find the key. If you find the key, you don't have to answer a question to advance.

1. You can use this thread to make comments, but NOT to answer trivia questions. The only way to answer is by responding to the PMs I will send you.
2. I will use this thread to let everyone know what is happening in the game. ie, the current locations of each of you, the moves by the killer, who answered correctly, etc.
3. Try not IMDB'd the trivia questions. I will try for these questions to remain relatively easy or to pertain to popular movies.

Question: Why are the locations in 7 groups? Is it important for the game ?

The group locations are important because that way you can only advance one location at a time. For example, if you are on the First Group of locations, you cannot access, say, the rooms in Group 6.
They are grouped in batches of 3, so the Killer will be in one. If you choose any of the other two locations, you will be safe and you will be able to advance, but only one at a time and when you are given the option to do so.

Some of you are understandably confused by the rules, and although they might seem a little complicated, they are not so much. If you are feeling overwhelmed by these, do not worry at all. You will be given periodical instructions via PM, all you have to do is answer these PMs. :)

When we begin the game you'll start in the Main Hall. From there you will receive a PM with the current locations you can access. Those will be:

The Dining Room
The Basement
You will answer the PM by choosing one of the three locations. I will then post your current status & location, along with the position of all the other players. The only person whose location will never be revealed is that of The Killer.

Truth be said. There is nothing in the forum's admin panel that allows me to do that. As of yet I have still never seen a forum that does. If I wanted to do this, I would have to go dig the mysql database tables manually.

As this is our first game, please keep in mind that I've never played this nor have seen it being played. In my head, everything should work out just fine, but there is always room for making it better. The rules are not untouchable (unlike some place we all know) and they can always be improved. Let's see how we fare in this first round.
As of now, The Killer has been randomly chosen and a PM with instructions has been dispatched to him. Remember that The Killer has the advantage of moving first.
The appointed Killer needs to check his PM now and reply to it in order for the game to properly start.
Some facts you need to know before we start this game:
- There are 20 available rooms in the mansion for you to explore.
- 5 of these rooms are LOCKED. You need a Skeleton Key to open these rooms.
- There are 2 hidden Skeleton Keys in the game

Our brave competitors have arrived at the Horror Mansion after numerous posts. Even if they feel a little Skipped (;)) by now, they are more than ready to face the mind-numbing threat of Samara, the demonic kid. Can they survive the horrors that await for them at the mansion? Only their Movie Trivia Knowledge will lead them to the way out.
Again, here is some useful information for you:
- There are 20 available rooms in the mansion for you to explore.
- 5 of these rooms are LOCKED. You need a Skeleton Key to open these rooms.

Right now, Samara has been let loose around the mansion and is currently hiding in one of the rooms. Beware of her wrath, mere mortals, if you happen to cross her path, you might as well consider yourself dead meat. Remember, if you choose a path that leads to Samara's current whereabouts, you will have to answer correctly a Movie Trivia Question in order to escape her thirst for blood. If not... :axed:

TURNS OF EVENTS:
Apparently, all of our players felt their first move should involve sitting at the table and fill their stomachs as one big happy family. Unfortunately for them, Samara thought exactly the same thing. Eric, Rick, Kathy and Achim, you are all in mortal danger.
Jon was the only one who figured The Basement would be too obvious a choice for Samara and is currently enjoying the nice comforts of a damp, dark spot in the mansion.
Since Samara is currently in the same room as Eric, Rick and Kathy, she has to choose ONE victim and come up with a Movie Trivia Question. The other three players have the option of going back to the Main Hall or remain in the room and choose to face Samara.
The tide now turns to Samara.
Samara, please check your PMs, you will receive further instructions.

Eric, a very handsome individual, has a very special power. He can duplicate himself and remerge the two copies anytime he wants. Unfortunately, when he does such a thing, his main self goes in stasis until the remerge takes place.
Since it's a beautiful saturday, he will duplicate himself in about 30 minutes and go play off-road with his truck while his main self will quietly remain in the Dining Room, unaware of what's happening and unable to respond to any external events.
When the copies merge back together, in 7 or 8 hours, the now single Eric (who happens to be a very handsome individual if nothing else), will be able to resume his activites in the Horror Mansion Survival Game.

Seeing as how Samara is only one and she may be having a hard time chasing you all, a new rule has been created. Read carefully now. :readthis:
If Samara successfully kills one of the players, that player will turn into a zombie. (http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/7172/zombie1fq0.jpg)
Now, think of having a zombie as some kind of perverse chess player. With a zombie at her disposal, Samara will be able to place him/her in whatever room she likes EXCEPT FOR THE LAST TWO ROOMS. Players should know that the Zombie will not harm anyone, but he/she will block all access to whatever room he/she is in. A player with a zombie in a room won't be able to move anywhere, so thread carefully because Samara will be able to go straight to that room and there's pretty much nothing the player can do.
Samara will place her zombies just before she makes her move. A zombie can't be placed in a room that is already occupied. Once a zombie has been placed in a room, any number of players can go into that room, but won't be able to get out of it. The only way to get rid of them is if Samara goes to that room and challenges you to a trivia question.
The more players Samara gets to kill, the more zombies she will get!

Good question.
Samara will place her zombies just before she makes her move. A zombie can't be placed in a room that is already occupied. Once a zombie has been placed in a room, any number of players can go into that room, but won't be able to get out of it. The only way to get rid of them is if Samara goes to that room and challenges you to a trivia question.

Alright, before I post the next update, just wanted to let you know of a new feature in the game that will make things more interesting.
Hidden in the house are a variety of ancient books. (http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/773/ancientbookgl5.jpg) However, these books are not just comprised of regular novels or reference material. These books can contain either Blessings or Curses. Blessings will help you greatly on your way; Curses will damage your advancement in the game.
If you enter a room with a hidden book, you will receive a notification and you can choose to open the book or not. Now, you can easily dismiss the book and keep on your way but you may miss a Blessing that will help you on your way out. On the other hand, you could receive a Curse that will harm you. The decision lies with you.
Activation of Blessings/Curses will depend on its type and their lasting effects vary. Once a Blessing/Curse has been activated, they will not be able to activate themselves again until all the Blessings and Curses from all the books in the mansion have been used. Once all Blessings/Curses have been used, the books will randomly change locations and will be active again for the remaining players. All blessings and curses can only be used once. NOTE: Samara can't use the books, only regular players have access to the books.
Right now, there are 12 hidden books with 12 different Blessings/Curses throughout the mansion. The following is a list of the current Blessings and Curses that lie within the pages of the Ancient Books.
Blessings
- Deapparitius Blessing (http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1718/invisiblemanwq5.jpg) - This blessing will make the player invisible to Samara.
If you happen to enter a room that Samara is already occupying, she will not be able to see you, and thus will not harm you. This blessing becomes active at the moment of reading the book and will last until the player reaches the next room.
- Alohomora Blessing (http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/4797/istockphoto214267oldkeyhg5.jpg) - This blessing will open ONE locked door without the use of a Skeleton Key.
This blessing will become active at the moment of accessing a locked room. The player does not have control over the blessing. If you encounter a locked room, the blessing will become active and open the door for you.
- Shattered Zombie Blessing (http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/2475/screaming20zombieog4.jpg) - This blessing will make a Zombie crumble to pieces.
This blessing will become active when the player access a room with a Zombie in it. At that moment, the Zombie will crumble and the player will be able to access the next set of rooms at the next turn.
- Transportation Blessing (http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/5084/istockphoto411246forwarug1.jpg) - This blessing will automatically transport the player to the next set of rooms and the room of his choice.
This blessing will become active at the moment of reading it. The player will reappear in his chosen room pertaining to the immediate set of rooms.
- Duality Blessing (http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/5933/dualityna9.jpg) - This blessing will make the player able to move twice in a single turn.
This blessing will become active at the moment of reading it. The player will be able to make his/her move and then move again. If Samara, a skeleton key, a zombie or a book are in the next room that will be occupied by the player, they will become null since the player is already skipping that room.
- The Lazarus Blessing (http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1818/zombiesqm7.jpg) - This blessing will make the player resurrect from the grave if killed by Samara.
The most powerful of blessings. This blessing will become active if a player gets killed by Samara. After dying, the player will be resurrected and will be able to start the game again, beginning in The Main Hall.

If the player is caught by Samara and given a Trivia Question, the player won't be able to gain help from a clue and will have to answer the question without them. This curse becomes active at the next immediate encounter with Samara.
- Inmovilis Curse (http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/9564/mr20freezevw6.gif) - This curse will freeze the player in his/her current room.
This curse will become active at the moment of reading it. The player will be frozen in his current room and won't be able to move until the next turn, thus becoming a potential target for Samara.
- Evil Incantation Curse (http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/1439/demonic20soulqj0.jpg) - This curse will invoke Samara to the room the player is in.
This curse will become active at the moment of reading it. The curse will move Samara to the same room you're in and you will be automatically forced to answer a question if you want to live.
- The Henrietta Curse (http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5336/evildead202fa9.jpg) - This curse will transform you into Henrietta for two entire turns.
This curse will become active at the moment of reading it. The curse will automatically transform the player into Henrietta, an evil ghoul that will help Samara destroy all the other players. Samara is able to control Henrietta so she will designate where she will go and what player to target. Henrietta is also capable of killing the other players, so she will also ask trivia questions.
- The Regression Curse (http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/1538/gira3jl2.gif) - This curse will transport the player back to The Main Hall.
This curse will become active at the moment of reading it. The player will be automatically transported to The Main Hall where he/she will have to start all over again.
- The Dread Curse (http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9250/fullskull1qz3.jpg) - This curse will cause the player to lose all intelligence for two entire turns
The most powerful of curses. This curse will become active when encountering Samara. If a player is cursed with Dread, he/she will not be able to answer questions. If the player encounters Samara during the course of two turns, she will automatically kill you, no questions asked. However, if the player was already blessed with The Lazarus Blessing, he/she will be able to start the game again. This powerful curse will null all other blessings (if applicable) except for The Lazarus Blessing and The Deapparitius Blessing.

However, things are not so simple. In order to escape the Horror Mansion, Rick & Jon will have to answer a set of 5 questions each to get out. If they answer correctly 3 out of 5, they will remain in this same room until they get the 5 questions right. In this case, you will be safe from Samara since she can't reach these rooms. If they answer incorrectly 3 out of 5 questions, they will go back to a previous set of rooms that will be randomized (that is, it can be the firsts set of rooms or upper set of rooms, nobody knows). Also please note that if you answer incorrectly 3 out of 5 questions, once you leave the room with the way out, the escape door can change its position and it can then be either in Mother's Room or Hannibal Lecter's Cell. If one player has to leave the room with the way out and go back and another player is still in that same room, the escape door WON'T change its place.

What happened to James is easy enough, the book concealed the "Regression Curse" which instantaneously transports the player to the Main Hall. Sorry James. You get to start all over again. This does not explain why Samara too vanished, just as she was about to unleash her fury upon you. Hmmmm...

She looks a bit shocked to be there but quickly sees her chance at revenge and smiles....
(OK - here's what happened. Eric's book contained the "Evil Incantation" curse. This curse makes Samara appear right before your eyes. Just as Samara was about to attack James he was whisked off to the Main Hall while, at the same time, Eric evoked the Evil Incantation which made Samara instantaneously go from the Bathroom to Eric's location. Don't look at me, I just took over half way through :laugh: )
Status: No longer singing "Viva Las Vegas" he has now switched to "The Impossible Dream" as he dares Samara to give it her best shot

Just a heads up that the mansion will be a lot safer for the next 24 hours or so (probably a little more), as the Killer will have left (not that it was all that dangerous to begin with though :whistle:). I'll be out camping for the weekend.

Couldn't even imagine 0 C right now. Sounds lovely. It's so freggin hot here. Right now 88 degrees F with 85% humidity. "Feels like" temperature of 96. It's 9:30 at night. Another couple years and we're out of here. Waiting for the kids to graduate (college) then moving at least 750 miles north of here.

While this has helped by creating an encounter at every round our Killer has yet to win a battle. She turned to (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v513/lyonsden5/immortal63do6.jpg) Mother for advice at the end of the last round. Mother had a nice little surprise in store for Samara. Samara was presented with a book, a very special book. A book of spells.
One of the spells is The "Power of Three" spell (sorry to the Charmed fans for the rip-off). If Samara reads the spell aloud she will be able to attack three people at once in three separate locations. However, if Samara decides to use the spell it will severely weaken her for the next round. She will no longer have the advantage of picking a room where a guest is located. She will have to choose her room completely at random.
A PM has been sent to Samara to see what her decision is. My guess would be everyone in the mansion is currently in danger, but we shall soon see.

Perhaps they should be phrased as riddles, or more picture messages? Harder to search for. And drop the clues, maybe add time limits. Truth be told, I was very close to failing the Fight Club one. It came to me in a moment of desperation and I only asked for the clue to confirm I was right because I knew I wouldn't be penalised.

I know. The only type of questions I could ask that MIGHT not have the answer on IMDb, is image and/or sound trivia. But hunting difficult ones for those is even harder!
We also can't control IMDb usage, it's just impossible.
Unless I started posting 1/4 screenshots of a non recognizable area of the frame, and hope somebody gets it by pure luck! Like "Whose nose is this?" or "Nice cleavage! Who's it belong to?" or "Who's that back hand, over there?"

Getting tricky questions is damn hard so, Seabstien, I feel your pain. I had to search through countless internet sites and even dust off some old movie trivia books for the ones I asked the first round... and even then you all got the answers!
I think no clues would be the way to go.

Wait!! :-\ Don't sharpen the guillotine just yet! In 1962 he also was the host of the short lived TV series called "Out of This World" that ran in the UK. While Eric did not have the answer Samara was looking for he was able to name a TV series that Karloff hosted. :stars: (When I saw his answer I thought we had our 1st kill.... guess not). Since Eric gave a correct answer to the question he once again has defeated Samara's attack.

The book contained the "Henrietta Curse". This curse has transformed Kathy into Henrietta for two entire turns. Henrietta is an evil ghoul that will help Samara destroy all the other players. Samara is able to control Henrietta so she will designate where she will go and what player to target. Henrietta is also capable of killing the other players, so she will also ask trivia questions.

This is it! This could be the last round (sorry James). Getting past Hannibal may not be as easy as they think though.
To refresh everyone memory, this is how the final room works:
You will be presented with 5 questions/riddles/pictures/etc. If you answer correctly 3 out of 5, you will remain in this same room until you get the 5 questions right. In this case, you will be safe from Samara since she can't reach these rooms. If you answer incorrectly 3 out of 5 questions, you will go back to a previous set of rooms that will be randomized (that is, it can be the firsts set of rooms or upper set of rooms, nobody knows). Also please note that if you answer incorrectly 3 out of 5 questions, once you leave the room with the way out, the escape door can change its position and it can then be either in Mother's Room or Hannibal Lecter's Cell. If there are two players in the room with the way out and one player has to leave the room and go back leaving the other player in that same room, the escape door WON'T change its place.
Hannibal will be sending PMs to both Eric and Kathy shortly.

We would need some clarification from Sailor on that. As far as I am concerned you will get a chance to correct the incorrect answers. Perhaps that would change next round,after Sailor clarifies.
We didn't really decide on clues. The general opinion was not to use them. Tell you what. I'll give you three.

I did these type of questions to see what kind of reaction they would get. Is this the level we want the next game to be? Even if you search online for these it would be very hard to get the answers on more than 4 of the 11 (hd to throw a coule easy ones in there). With most, either you know them or you don't. :thumbup:

Also known as the only player to be killed by Samara. Can he show he is truly the more powerful of the two or will he fade back into his cellophane existence? We shall soon see.
At stake: James will do anything not to be know as the only one who was defeated by Samara.

One month ago Sailor Ripley put out a challenge to anyone interested in a PM and Rules intensive game. 5 players initially accepted the challenge with Kathy jumping in just as things were getting started. Here were the initial players.

So as not to make things too extremely difficult for the players it was decided to allow hints for clues, a decision that would later prove unnecessary.

Frustration was already beginning to set in for our killer.

Once again the game was changed to make it more interesting. The addition of a variety of hidden books (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v513/lyonsden5/ancientbookgl5.jpg) was added. However, these books were not just comprised of regular novels or reference material. These books contained either Blessings or Curses. Blessings to help you greatly on your way; Curses to damage your advancement in the game.

It was here where we had a new player. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v513/lyonsden5/mcellophanecn5.png) Mister Cellophane himself, James decided to join in the fun. He started in the same place everyone started, the main hall, a place he would really get to know before the game was over.

Another rule change was implemented. From this point forward the killer would now choose his or room only after the other players picked theirs. :voodoo: It was still random but allowed for an attack at every round. So now is when the bloodshed would begin… right?

James survived the attack. Rick and Jon correctly answered Mother’s 5 questions and were released from the mansion. Victorious, they celebrated outside by having a picnic lunch ???

At this point we had a set back. Our host and the game’s creator was called away from his hosting duties to actually do some work. This was not the end though. Having recently freed himself from Samara’s clutches Rick decided to take up the hosting duties. The game would continue, under new management, although it would be missing some of the flair its original host added.

James was toast. But to poor Samara’s surprise this kill did not last. James had in his possession a blessing which allowed him to resurrect himself. Unfortunately for James it was once again back in the main hall. James spent so much time in the main hall he transformed into (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v513/lyonsden5/lurch.jpg)

Hannibal’s questions were pretty tricky. It looked like Eric and Kathy may not be leaving just yet.
Wrong. Our players once again proved their movie trivia knowledge to be unstoppable.

Once Eric and Kathy escaped it left behind only two players. One killer who didn’t kill and one wayward delivery man who kept getting sent back to the beginning of the game. In their previous three encounters James had thwarted Samara’s attacks two times. Feeling confident James decided to challenge Samara to a three question duel to the death. As with most other rounds the end result didn’t quite match the hype going into the round. Both players correctly answered two of the three questions.
Calling it a draw they both left the mansion... this time through the front door. :friends:

I would like to thank Sailor Ripley for starting this game for us. It evolved as we played into what I believe is a really fun way to sharpen and show off your movie trivia knowledge. Also a special thanks to Sebastien. It could not have been easy to be defeated at each and every attack. You were a good sport about all the kidding you received (and will no doubt continue to receive).

With all the new people and some of the suggestions we had while we played I think it would be fun.

Just read the complete topic today, It looks like a lot of fun. So if you decide to start another one in the future count me in, since I was AWOL for the first one (now I'm almost always there).

It was fun, but a lot of work and a bit unbalanced. I pretty much walked out and had a picnic with Rick for a week, whereas other players couldn't get out of the first room!
If we do it again, perhaps each player could host a room, while also playing? A bit like Monopoly, you land on a square that someone owns, that someone makes a charge. Here the host of the room could reveal a horror character with evil trivia as his weapon! :devil: That way, everyone gets a fair stab(!) at being the killer or victim...

Being the previous killer (if we can call it that), it is insanely hard to come up with a tough question with this crowd. It's actually frustrating to a certain extent, and yet, it just shows how good everybody
is at using google here knows their movies.
