Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang, a review by dfmorgan

Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang

Year: 2010
Director: Susanna White
Cast: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans
Overview: Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang is the next chapter of the hilarious, magical and heartwarming fable that has enchanted children around the world.

Emma Thompson returns as the mysterious nanny who appears when she's needed the most and wanted the least. This time, she finds herself at a family farm where mayhem has broken out between some boisterous country children and their spoilt city cousins.

Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle to a tree-climbing piglet, Nanny McPhee conjures up just the right formula to teach her charges five new lessons.

Watched: 24th Jul 2010
My Thoughts: A fairly enjoyable romp. A decent retread of the original Nanny McPhee. Everyone seemed to play their parts as caricatures especially Rhys Ifans as the spivvish Uncle with shades of Flash 'arry from St. Trinian's, Minder's Arthur Daley and the spiv in Dad's Army. But overall enjoyable.

My Rating: An enjoyable 3

Rest Stop, a review by Hal

Title: Rest Stop: Uncut
Year: 2006
Director: John Shiban
Rating: Unrated
Length: 110 Min.
Video: Widescreen 1.78:1
Audio: English: Dolby TrueHD: 5.1, English: Dolby Digital: 5.1
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Stars:
Jaimie Alexander
Michael Childers
Jennifer Cormack
Gary Entin
Edmund Entin

Plot:
Jess is at the wheel. Nicole rides shotgun. At the end of the road stretching before them is glamorous Hollywood. They're on a road trip, all right...straight to hell. When the runaway lovers pause at an abandoned rest stop, Jess disappears. And someone else appears - someone with his own demented sense of fun. With drills. Staple guns. Box cutters. All the tearing, grinding, ripping tools needed to hew wood. Or metal. Or people. Especially young, pretty people just like Nicole. Director John Shiban, writer and executive producer of The X-Files and Supernatural, keeps the terrors and twists coming, each out-shocking the last. Stop. Stay awhile. But don't expect to rest.

Extras:
Scene Access
Feature Trailers
Deleted Scenes
Featurettes

My Thoughts:
I have to admit this movie did get my stomach in a knot at times and had me cringing during a few scenes.  I found it quite effective that the antagonist is never actually seen, at least his face; just adding to the fear as you envision in your own mind just what the face of evil might look like.

I still haven't quite figured out the RV family scene.  It just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the movie.

There are three alternate endings on the DVD.  They definitely selected the right one for the theatrical release.

Plot:
So we bid farewell to a true sitcom classic. 3rd Rock's brilliant ensemble cast has made it one of television's most unique, original and outragious sitcoms hailed by critics, adored by fans and honoured with Emmy Awards. Presentend here are all 20 episodes of the final season containing some of 3rd Rock's most memorable episodes and featuring guests slots by the likes of John Cleese and Elvis Costello.

3rd Rock From the Sun
Season 6.19 The Thing That Wouldn't Die (Part I)
Writer: Dave Jeser (Screenwriter), Matt Silverstein (Screenwriter), Dave Lewman (Original Material By), Joe Liss (Original Material By)
Director: Terry Hughes
Cast: John Lithgow (Dick Solomon), Kristen Johnston (Sally Solomon), French Stewart (Harry Solomon), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tommy Solomon), Simbi Khali (Nina), Elmarie Wendel (Mrs. Dubcek), Wayne Knight (Officer Don), Jane Curtin (Mary Albright), Ileen Getz (Judith), Mindy Spence (Sam), Chad Einbinder (Rico)

To conclude this series they have Mary finally finding out about Dick. It is a little fast, how she accepted this fact (they should have done this earlier in the season and deal with this in more than one episode), but it was fun to watch her expressions when Dick asked her to think about the last six years with the knowledge that he is an alien and how much sense it makes.
