My Thoughts:
I just finished watching this entire series.  It took me over two months because I simply could not get fully engaged in this show, even though I really wanted to and fully expected to given that it is based on a concept from Gene Roddenberry.  It was a real struggle to get through it.

It was evident throughout the series that they were on a tight budget.  I got really tired of seeing the same "cave" scenes over and over in episode after episode "dressed up" a little differently.  Too many of the story lines were obscure and hard to follow.  Several of the characters disappeared (Rev Bem and Tyr Anasazi) and others changed significantly (Trance & Gaheris/Telemachus Rhade).  Apparently, Brent Stait just couldn't deal with the hours in the make-up chair and the burden of the costume which I can see must have been stifling.

I guess they thought the series was going to end after Season 4 which made Season 5 something completely different from the first four seasons and just hard to swallow.  The final episode(s) also left too many unanswered questions.

Everyone raves about Kevin Sorbo's acting, but I just didn't see it.  He was OK, but I actually thought Beka was the most interesting character...very real.

The crew never really seemed to gel for me.  There were always conflicts and questionable loyalties through the entire series, that just left me feeling like nobody could be trusted except to look out for themselves.

The special effects and CG got progressively better year after year and is really the only bright spot of the series for me.

I'm glad I watched it, but I don't think it will ever get a second viewing.

I remember catching a couple of episodes on German TV now and then, but it never seemed like something worthwhile to me. So the biggest surprise from your review is that it actually lasted 5 full seasons. I didn't know that.

So the biggest surprise from your review is that it actually lasted 5 full seasons.

It apparently had a very devoted fan club!

I never saw any of this while it was on TV.

I never saw this one.  I heard of it, but I really didn't know what it was about.

I watched the first season or so but never got over the impression of watching Hercules in Space. Then it just fell off my radar and I never bothered to look for it again.

I started to collect the series but I stopped after season 1.2. I like Kevin Sorbo in "Hercules" but I think he is a miscast in this series.

I personally enjoyed most of the episodes when it was on TV. A little cheesy, but I like cheese.  :D

Season 5 was definitely phoned in. My guess is they just did whatever they could to have a season 5 so they could get to the magic number of 100 episodes, AKA syndication.
