Some surprising ones in there, Matthias! I'm looking forward to your comments on Taken. It got a handful of bad reviews, but there's seems to be a great deal of support for it.

I'm also not a huge fan of Almodovar, but I adored Volver. More mood than anything. Cruz is wonderful, while the story is a bit odd.

Sticking with the Spaniards, have you seen Pan's Labyrinth before? Gorgeous film.

I really liked Taken when I saw it in the theater.  I thought Twilight was ok.  I was entertained by it, but I think it has been very over hyped.

Contrast program to Let the Right One In and The Cake Eaters.

I'd like to see what you think of this one. (Haven't seen it myself and don't intend to, but curous how much of a contrast it is.)

And some action flicks for the popcorn corner. Although for one of them, there is probably no excuse.

I have been listening to the (Cool) Shite on the Tube movie podcast for 2 years now. This is the movie where for the first time the entire team agreed on the lowest rating! Interested what you will think.

No I haven't seen anything except Gia and Pep Squad from the lot. Probably 90% of my collection are informed blind-buys. I rarely go to the movie theatre anymore - unless it's some festival where you get to see movies that will never end up on a DVD.

Based on what I've seen (Blade 2, Hellboy), I'm not very impressed with Guillermo del Toro so far. I initially wanted to buy something else entirely: The Fall, which supposedly is also quite stunning, visually. But the reviews described that as a rather empty exercise, and it wasn't cheap enough to warrant buying it anyway. One reviewer recommended Pan's Labyrinth instead, and I spontaneously went with it.

I haven't read very good things either, but as I said, I bought is mostly as a contrast to both Let the Right One In and The Cake Eaters. And I'm not yet convinced that it doesn't have some redeeming quality. For once, the director is Catherine Hardwicke, who made the very impressive Thirteen. Second, and most importantly, it stars Kristen Stewart, who is a great but somewhat underrated young actress.

The thing is, I liked the 2004 version to some extent, which was also widely dismissed. I have never seen the older one, though.

This is one of those films that I can't decide if I like or not.

I thought that this lived upto the promise of Casino Royale(which I hope you've seen, if not then get it and watch it before QoS)

I would put this in my top ten films of 2008 and it is in my top 25 of all time.

Del Toro has a "one for you, one for me" approach to movies. He takes the cheques for things like Blade II and Mimic and spends them on his proper films. Hellboy to some extent, and especially it's sequel, bridge the gap more. He developed it with Hellboy's creator Mike Mignola and there's a lot more of his inventive style in them, but you cannot escape the fact it's a comic book movie that knows it's roots.

His Spanish language films are wonderful. If you enjoy Pan's Labyrinth, I highly recommend The Devil's Backbone and Cronos. Especially the latter given your apparent interest in vampires. It's an interesting version of vampiric myths, with (by the end at least) a rather bizarre take on the classic Universal monsters that Del Toro loves. I believe in the modst of his very busy scedule there is still a mooted Frankenstein.

He also produced The Orphanage, which is also very good and if you'd never seen a proper Del Toro film, an excellent indication of his themes.

I thought Pan's Labyrinth was boring and overrated 
One of those movies, where I could have walked out anytime and not have the feeling that I was missing something. I.e. no real interest what happens to the characters. They never connected with me.
