Have you ever heard the story about Alfred Hitchcock's granddaughter and To Catch A Thief? I think it was his granddaughter anyway. She was asked in school to write an essay on To Catch A Thief. Obviously, she went to see Gramps and he gave her a few pointers. Despite help from the director of the film, she got a disappointing "C"! The teacher then explained her mistakes.

Dejected, she went back to Hitch. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, that's what I thought it meant..."

  That just sums up what a genius he was and how well he understood film, that he didn't feel he should be precious about his own work.

Ive heard that story, it made me laugh.... Its one of those things, when you are at school and you read a book, if you disagree with the meaning that your teacher gives, then you are obviously wrong! we once had a teacher that encouraged us to develop our own ideas about things like that... after all, I always think the story should be... uhh, In the mind of the beholder

I guess it must have happened more than once that a director was asked about the meaning of what a certain image held, with loads of possible interpretations, and he may have just thought it looks cool Often I read reviews with the wildest interpretations and I can only doubt that the director had all those complicated thoughts about certain things in his film. I lack strong examples right now, but I think you'll know.

mmm, maybe that infamous band-aid on Ving Rhames neck in Pulp Fiction? Is it really showing us that Ving's character is evil (I forgot the exact details) and his sould had been pulled out of him through his neck? Or maybe Ving just had a small injury on the day of shooting...?

I know what you mean. I usually feel this way about movies where people interpret a lot of things into it, but I think that the director did not exactly had anything specific in mind. I doubt that David Lynch can make sense of his own movies.
The same thing about art. In school we were asked to interpret paintings, but I always felt the artist just wanted to make a living and tried to make the painting look cool and/or experimented with techniques.

That make me thing at the movie Back to School when the Rodney Dangerfield character use Kurt Vannegut (?) to write an essay about the meaning of one of his books for a school work and he fail with a mention he had not understand the book at all

It's a case by case thing though. Romero has famously said his zombie movies aren't metaphors for anything (though I honestly believe they are imbued with something that maybe he felt on a sub-concious level). On the other hand, something like The Deer Hunter or Straw Dogs is full of hidden meanings that had to be done on purpose.

Wow, you have almost as many Drew movies as I do Julia ones...I'm at an even 20 for her.  I don't know if Julia has done any animated films, though...I never think to include those.  Of the Drew movies you list, I have just 4 of them...including the animated one (where you never see her) and Batman Forever where she has just a bit part.  So I only have 2 of her "real" movie roles...in the first Charlie's Angels and in Bad Girls.  Wait a minute!  You don't have E.T.

  Nope... never got around to getting ET yet. Probably because I watched it so many times with my wife that it got a little old on me.
