Seeing the above list I also must wonder what The Full Monty is doping there. For once I thought it was a UK film and then it certainly was not an Oscar film. L.A. Confidential is clearly the film that should have won.

That's a funny way to spell "L.A. Confidential". 

I know I'm only echoing the others, but it bears repeating. Curtis Hanson's movie was robbed. Actually, had Good Will Hunting won I'd have been less angry because it was a small, well-made film that thoroughly deserved its Best Screenplay award, but still, L.A. Confidential is superb on all levels.

At the time, I remember the consensus was that the Academy was cornered and had to reward Titanic because of its huge cost. As an industry they had to legitimise their product. I'm not quite that cynical and I think some of the more crinkly voters liked its nostalgia for old-time Hollywood style. That doesn't disguise the fact it's bloated junk though.

So could the industry reward Avatar because they have to be seen to support the "revolution"? I hope not. I still haven't seen it yet, but the reviews (Karsten's being the latest I've read! ) all seem to agree that once you're past the wow factor, it's just a pile of so much nothing. Hmmm, sounds like Titanic!
