50 Worst Movies

I never take things like this seriously. Just a bit of fun. I wouldn't even have mentioned it, but I think this quote about Freddy Got Fingered is great!

Jimmy may be both resigned and completely unsurprised that his hero Uwe Boll gets two entries. Actually I suppose it is a surprise there wasn't more! Alone In The Dark is number 21; the picture is enough to tell me it deserves it and more. Diabolical!

I mean, I was fairly upset to see Mark Wahlberg films in there a couple of times Ahh! damn Boogie Nights... just have a soft spot for the guy.

The problem that I have with that list is that most of these movies seem to be mainstream. Yes, many of them aren't good but I've seen a lot worse films than those on the list. If this list could be called anything then "Worst 50 films ever made of which at least a reasonable number of people have heard of"

Let's just take any American Ninja movie or Kickboxer or Missing in Action, where are those on the list?

I agree Karsten... I don't know how this was voted for but I'm guessing there was a list of films to pick from... I like a few films on that list and I would not say they were exactly "the worst" but then these silly lists are always subjective I guess

Looking over that list... most of them I never even seen... but of what I seen a few I agree with the list... then there is like 10 movies on there that I actually liked! But not surprised by that.

I have to disagree with Heaven's Gate being #6. I don't know how many of you were old enough to remember when it was being made, but the media savaged it before it was even released. It became a cause célèbre at the time, even though no one had seen any of the actual footage shot. They focused on the extravagances of the shoot by Cimino, because it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Cimino had gone a little crazy in his pursuit of cinema as Art.

I saw it in its original theatrical run, and I was blown away by the cinematography. One thing you can't say about Cimino is this, his film's look awful. Yes, the story seemed disjointed, but years later we found out that United Artists, in desperation, forced him to cut the film down tremendously. A few years ago, I got to see the extended version on TCM, and it proved that Cimino's original concept was actually good.

Depends on your definition of "bad". I give free reign to movies that are simply junk, like American Ninja. That's a great Friday night movie! And the sequels are even worse, but are better than comedies because of it. When people were too stupid to make a good movie, I feel sorry for them.

A truly bad movie for me has to be borderline offensive, where they treat the viewer and the story with disrespect or complete ignorance. Therefore only mainstream are eligible because they are the high profile movies that we are told to like. I can agree with the very high placing of Batman and Robin, Battlefield Earth and Matrix Revolutions. I'm disappointed Judge Dredd didn't get a mention. I haven't seen Transformers 2 and certainly planned too, depsite the bad press, but the screenshot they use on the now dead link is an horrendous image and as put me right off (two robots that seem to be acting like apes? I mean, that is bad!).

Certainly none of the list made me think, well that shouldn't be there. Except...

I've never seen Heaven's Gate, Antares, but your comments ring true with a lot that I've heard over the years. I think like Cleopatra, it was flop in the days when Hollywood wasn't used to such huge failures, so its reputation has unfairly endured. But holding with my above criteria, and considering it was before the days of commercial blockbuster crap, I doubt I would find it "offensive". Perhaps just disappointed it didn't quite gel. It goes without saying that number 50, Spider-Man 3, is bound to be a worse film than anything Cimino ever even thought of making. There's nothing cynical about trying.

The saddest part of the Heaven's Gate debacle was that it forever changed Hollywood. The Auteur's were out, and the blockbuster Wunderkinds were in. Movie making has never been the same. To me, the late 60's through the mid-70's were the most fruitful time in film history. In one-felled swoop, it was over.
