Daughter Studying Abroad
« on: June 06, 2014, 09:03:57 PM »
As many of you probably remember... my daughter Brittany will be studying abroad in London. Before when I mentioned this I didn't know what University she would be studying at... well (even though she claims she told me before) I finally got an answer today. Found out that she will be studying at the University of London.  I also found out that she will be staying with a host family which I am happy about.

While talking to Brittany on the phone today we were talking about how on the following year she is planning to study abroad once again... the next time being in Japan! My daughter... the world traveler! I asked her how she was coming along with her learning Japanese (coming along fine) and how at least she don't have that worry in London. That is when she tells me about some of the different terms used in UK compared to here. Liker...

Here: eraser
UK: rubber
(that could be embarrassing!) LOL

Here: Cigarette
UK: Fag

Here: Sprite
UK: Lemon-aide
Which makes me want to ask... if Brittany wants an actual Lemon-aide  what does she ask for?

Any of our UK friends out there that can help her not embarrass herself when asking for stuff... what all does she need to know?... would be much appreciated! :P

In other words... what other differences in languages must she know?

bird - girl

Now this may lead to some confusion, I suppose.
AFAIK "bird" is not the nicest expression one can choose for "girl".

Wonder if this will cause confusion.... around here we call the washroom a rest room. So I can see her going somewhere and asking where the rest room is. :)

"bird" is usually used in reference to an attractive female.....and corresponds to the American "chick"

jumper = sweater

I asked someone before when I got a bit confused because of something said on Top Gear - show from England.  If I remember correctly, quid is slang for pound...the money.
They call four door cars - guess what we consider sedans - saloons.  At least they do on Top Gear.

Any help here would be appreciated... Brittany wants to go there with a gift for the host family... but has no ideas! How about some good ideas for a gift?

Brittany and her roommate met a "pigeon man" and played with pigeons. Her roommate snapped this picture of Brittany.... made my day! LOL

Brittany was part of a world record attempt for the most people in 1 room dressed as Spider-Man. She got a free Spider-Man costume out of it.
