It is time again: This year's FantasyFilmFest is about to start. In Munich it will be in the beginning of September.
Like last year, we again plan to watch about 10 movies in that week. And I will again post short reviews here.

You can find the movie selection here. I have started prioritizing the movies with the help of their synopsises. Is there anything you already heard of and would recommend to watch?

The ones that jump out at me are District 9, which I saw the trailer for yesterday and can't make my mind up; Red Cliff, the John Woo epic which looks hollow and absurd but amazing all the same; and most of all, Moon, which is supposed to be a marvellous piece of sci-fi with Sam Rockwell. In fact, it looks like the most intelligent and serious sci-fi film for a very long time.

Moon is supposed to be good, at least from what I have heard.

I am very excited abot District 9, but I don't think it needs to be seen at the festival, as it will be released to cinemas soon.

Red Cliff has good reputation here in Asia. DVD is available elsewhere, but of course this is probably the one-off chance to see it on the big screen.

I am not familiar with anything else, really (other than some of the sequel stuff, but why watch a stupid sequel oif there is exciting new stuff on the menu).

If it was me I'd be heading for these:
BANLIEU e 13 - ULTIMATUM
Bathory
ORPHAN
SNIPER, THE

I've seen these two and enjoyed them alot, especially Red Cliff:
BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE
RED CLIFF

I saw this for free, but wanted my money back at the end.

K-20: Legend of the Mask

This is a Japanese superhero movie set in an alternate timeline, where WWII never happened. In this timeline, Japan has still a strong cast system where the poor people and the aristrocrats are heavily separated. I enjoyed this movie, even though it his heavy on movie clichés (especially superhero movie clichés). It is very reminiscent of Spider-Man and Batman. Special effects are good and there were some real good laughs in there.

Polytechnique

A French-Canadian movie based on a real-life school massacre. This movie was shot simultaneously in English and in French with the same actors. We were shown the English version. It was good, but not really a must-see. This movie tries very hard to be realistic.

Here we heard about this event years after years after years since it had happen, to be honest a lot of person are tired at the way the media bring this every year... You can easilly guess that my interest for this was low. But I ain't the only one since it was a box office failure here (even if the media had treated this film like it was one of the best French Canadian film ever made [untill the next French Canadian movie released after it]). For what I've understand this movie try too much to not offend anybody... I don't know but if you don't want to offend just don't make the godamn movie :hmmmm:

I know, but I recently found out, that it also takes the complete URL and now I am using that because it is much easier to copy ;)
Simply a copy/paste of the address line instead of having to extract the ID. At least it worked the last time I tried it. If it doesn't, consider it a feature request ;)

It does not work. I correct your postings (see my "edited by"). ;)

This time. But I once actively tried it out, because I wanted to see if it also works with the full URL and for some strange reason it did work then.

District 13 Ultimatum

This movie was a very nice surprise. I almost didn't go watch it when I learned that this is a sequel to a movie I have not seen. But it stands very well alone. This is a great non-stop action movie with very nice martial arts (and supposedly without any wirework). It even was very funny in parts. Very well spent two hours. I have pre-ordered both movies now on Blu-ray.

Largo Winch

I thought this movie was rather boring. I was hoping for it to come to an end. It may be that it was let-down for me, because I have watched a movie I very much enjoyed just before this. So my expectations were very high. I must admit there were some good action scenes in it, but I just came out of a movie, were similar action was done, only better (in my opinion).

It's probably more of the same, because I haven't seen this one, but that's how I'd sum up the first. Great film.

Doghouse

A boring and unoriginal zombie movie. The director thought the idea, that only women turned into zombies and the men, who didn't understand women, had to fight them, is big enough to warrant yet another zombie movie. This is a comedy, but for me most jokes fell flat. The best thing was, that the director was in attendence and had a little Q&A after the movie.
