Hey all...
I decided to put a custom Genre for movies based on True Stories into dvd profiler... I know a handful of movies in my collection that are based on true stories but am sure I don't know all of them....

Does anyone know a good resource for movies based on true stories?

Going over my list... I do know about the following...

- Erin Brockovich
- K19: The Widowmaker
- Patch Adams
- Swearing Allegiance
- Ted Bundy
- Titanic

Plus a filtered search in overview on DVDP for the word 'true' should bring up a lot of applicable films (mine showed 440 titles)

Thanks Rich! I never think of IMDB for some reason! probably because it is a site I seldomly ever use.

 :phew:

I thought someone had come up with another marathon!

What's your criteria, Pete? An near accurate retelling or general inspiration? Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs and Psycho are all inspired by serial killer Ed Gein, yet they share little in common. I doubt either of them could ever be described as definitive.

I would say somewhere between those 2 choices.. as I don't think it should have to be near accurate. But I do (normally) want it known that this is actually based on a true story. Like from your post... before now I would have never known  that Silence of the Lambs and Psycho  were inspired by Ed Gein.

I went over imdb to see what all I had from their list... had several I didn't mark before. Some of them I was like well No Shit! I knew that!  :P and others that kinda surprised me that they were based on a true story...

My List:
- Amityville Horror (1979 - I know is based on a Hoax... but decided to keep it anyway)
- Amityville Horror (2005 - I know is based on a Hoax... but decided to keep it anyway)
- An American Haunting
- Deranged (haven't watched this yet)
- Erin Brockovich
- The Exorcism of Emily Rose
- From Hell
- Girl, Interrupted (this one surprised me)
- K19: The Widowmaker
- Man on the Moon
- Patch Adams
- Pearl Harbor
- Saving Private Ryan (never realized)
- Star 80
- Swearing Allegiance
- Ted Bundy
- Titanic
- Jack the Ripper
- We Were Soldiers (never realized)
- Zodiac

I will probably eventually do a weekend movie marathon of this some time... but probably nothing more then that.

I like the idea of this as a months marathon Pete, it has such a diversity of subjects it would be compelling

Beware of Saving Private Ryan. The premise is certainly inspired by truth, but I don't believe the mission itself was.

I think that the dvd release for this one is cut, my copy (who isn't the official because of that) had a running time of 1h23. By the way this is a good canadian horror movie Pete.

Possibly... but I don't think I have enough of them to do a full month. I only have 20 titles.  :P

I'm surprised you don't have this in your collection Pete or Jimmy, supposedly based on true story I had to switch off after about 15 minutes as i am a wuss and found it quite shocking. Perhaps you guys are made of sterner stuff and I'd like to hear what you guys make of it

(I couldn't get your link to work, Rich)

It certainly is hard-going to watch, but a good film. I'd seen other films by the same indie group and wasn't impressed, but this surprised me at how maturely they'd approached the subject matter. Still got hit hard by the censors over here though, they chopped out 15 minutes before it could be released!

I had no idea it had been based on a true story though.

On the subject of true stories, how about The Elephant Man? Love that film!

Some of my favorites:

A League of Their Own
Rudy
Invincible
Cinderella Man
Miracle
Brian's Song
Kinsey
Buddy
Hotel Rwanda

Quick question... I am going over the movies that I ordered this month.

I got Awakenings... that one was easy since it says it right on the cover.  :P But I thought I remembered readings somewhere that Good Morning, Vietnam was based on a true story as well. According to IMDB... it says Based On Distorted Reality. So what the hell is that?  :P I mean is this one based on a true story or isn't it?

Thanks!  :)
