Is there a hack or mod for this software that marks a topic as "contains new postings" when some edits a posting?

This would be useful for our marathon threads were the postings are only edited instead of posting a new one.

:)

Edited.

I'll have to check, I'll get back to you on that.

It already happens when the last post in a thread is edited... So maybe that function needs "extension" only...

Touti

Haven't forgot about this but Simple Machines have had a crash on their server and I can't search for this right now.  Stay tuned we'll get back to you shortly.

Tom

Any news on this? Now that we are starting another marathon this would be a very nice addition.

Touti

I had forgotten about this, will check tonight.  Sorry !

Another suggestion:

When we play the "name 15 movies" game we copy the whole list into a new posting and add then another entry.

Why not doing that in the marathon threads, too. This way there will always be a new posting and thus it appears in the "unread" list.

I have to admit when I don't attend such a marathon I simply forget to look into the thread and even if I do so it's hard to spot the change.

PS: The April 2008 thread isn't even anymore (without scrolling down that is) in the marathon forum.

I had forgotten again :bag:

Checking right now if there's a mod or a solution for that.

Touti

As I began to search I was thinking about it and I don't see how it's possible to do that.

The forum automatically sorts the posts in a thread by their creation date.  When a post is edited, the forum cannot change the date because it would make the post the last one of the thread and the discussions would become unreadable since posts would no longer be in their right order.

Even if the forum could show the thread as having new posts, how would you know whether it is marked as such because of new posts or because of edited ones and, if there is only edited posts, how could you know which one they are ?

I'm still gonna check but frankly, considering the complexity of such a thing I doubt that there will be something available.

DJ Doena

I understand that changing the timestamp is not really a good idea for the reason that you gave.

Thus, I am proposing a change in the marathon threads themselves

That was what I was trying to say here:

Of course that would create more posts but I am sure the forum system can handle it.

Karsten, I'm testing something.  Can you edit the first post in this thread please ?

Touti

Didn't work.  I subscribed to the thread and was hoping it would notify me of the edited posts but it didn't.

I don't think that is practicable for the marathons. I like to keep one list, which I clean up and maintain. I also have this list bookmarked.
I don't want to search for my list, edit the post to copy the content, then creating a new post with the updated list, every time I want to add one rating to the list.
This is why we have usually two threads. One for the lists in which you usually have all lists of each participant on the first page of the thread. And the other for discussions. If we would update the first list with a new post each time, you would have to search for specific lists again, which we wanted to avoid and came up with the discussion thread.

I propose:
1) The current marathon gets pinned until this marathon is closed by the end of the month.
2) Every participant writes a post in the discussion thread when he/she has done an update.
or:
The marathon list thread gets a new post once in a while to get it up in the list and remind others about the thread. I would volunteer to do it.
