My 10 year old nephew Jimmy was taken by ambulance from my brother's local hospital to my local Children's Hospital.

Jimmy has a ruptured appendix and was just taken to surgery will be hospitalized for 5-7 days.

My brother will be staying with him during the day and I'll be with him at night - starting tonight.

Please keep him in your thoughts - I'm really worried.

Dragonfire

Oh no..that doesn't sound good.  :(

I hope he gets better soon.

Danae Cassandra

I hope he feels better soon!

My mom had her appendix out at 16, and she's made it through just fine, so I'm sure your nephew will ultimately be great.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

He came through surgery fine. He's comfortable but I'm sure that's because he's still sedated from surgery. Poor thing has tubes everywhere but the one in his nose is his only complaint. He will be here for close to a week and then will likely need IV antibiotic therapy at home.

I'm right next to him in case he needs anything but one time all he needed was a hug - poor baby.

Jimmy

Good to know that he is better and he is lucky to have a great aunt to take care of him Kathy.

Not of great confort but, unless I think of something else, it's better to have this happen when we are a kid as it is more dangerous when we are an adult.

BTW tell him that he had the greatest name a guy can have ;D

I am glad as well, to hear that surgery went fine. I wish he can recover quickly so that the stupid tube from his nose can be removed.

Poor guy! :( Glad got through it so well and hope for a speedy recovery!

Yea, the nose tube is very irritating.

I'll keep your nephew in my prayers, Kathy. Kids are tough. He'll pull through and later wonder why it was such a big deal to all of the adults
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

Never go to bed mad. Sleep on the couch instead.

There are a few broken branches in every family tree.

The NG is out! The difference in his mental and physical status from the time I left at 1pm until I returned 7 hours later was amazing.

The doctor was surprised at how well Jimmy is doing - he is taking ice chips, got out of bed and was smiling and happy when I came back.

Hopefully his cultures will come back negative so that he won't need to receive IV therapy at home.

Dragonfire

I'm glad he is doing well.

Surgery sucks...I still hate hospitals.  It sounds like he is recovering a bit faster than I did - least the 2 main hip surgeries.  I think I was mostly out of it for a few days each time.  Not fun.

snowcat

I hope he is feeling alot better :)

Kathy

Jimmy is a LOT better. IV is capped, he's on a regular diet and is even slowly walking the halls. He's supposed to get his abdominal drains out.

We're watching a bunch of DVDs - The Walking Dead: Season 1; Alien (all of them); Predator - none of those "silly, happy ones" for him!

I did get him to watch a DVD about baby animals - he fell asleep.

No results from the cultures yet - that is the last hurdle he needs to face.

So, all in all, very good news. The doctors and nurses are very impressed with the speed of his recovery.

Thank you all for your thoughts and good wishes - they were most welcome.

The only remaining downside: hospital food

Glad to hear he's doing better.  I went through a similar thing.  It had either ruptured or was about to.  I spent 5 days in the hospital.  Of course I also have the giant scar.  No laparoscopic for me.  That first walk was insane.  Took about 20 minutes to do a 40 second walk. :hysterical:
