New trend in Blu-ray releases

Has anyone else noticed the increasing number of Blu-ray titles that don't include a 3D-less option? It has been the case for a while that there would be a 3D release (usually with a 2D Blu-ray option included) and also a 2D only option, but just lately I've noticed a few new/upcoming releases that do away with this second option (so you either go Blu and get a 3D option, or you settle for DVD).

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. As a 2Der, I certainly don't want to be paying extra for an option that I don't want. That said, clearly it has to be better for the 3Ders... their product will become cheaper as sales volumes increase.

Honestly haven't seen any titles like that here. Sam may know of some that have passed through Rewind, but I can't imagine why they would think it a good idea. I've got one 3D capable title and that's Piranha, but it includes the correct version as well, not to mention a classic 3D option, with the cardboard glasses!

I seriously doubt 3D will ever truly catch on for home cinema, mainly because it's bloody awful.

I haven't noticed it as a trend; haven't ordered in a few weeks now and the stuff I put on my Wish List didn't pose this problem. I would expect to come up with blockbusters mainly, which I haven't looked at a lot recently.

I am firmly in the 2D camp as well, so if it was to become a trend I would not appreciate it.

Seen a couple... :(

Most seem to be either packaged with both versions, or seperately though.

What titles, out of interest? Just wondered if it's major releases or not.

The only one that comes to mind immediately is Hugo (UK). Hopefully I am just jumping the gun on this.

Get the German version: Hugo Cabret
It too has unneeded discs though, since it's containing Blu, DVD and DC.
The major downside is that you'll have to wait until 23/08 for it (+ shipping to Australia)

Yes, you are there certainly! There are three releases of Hugo and several other big films like Tintin: DVD, 3D Blu-Ray and as Michael described, a Triple Play (DVD, Blu-Ray, Digital Copy) edition. Sometimes there are Double Play editions, missing the extra DVD or digital copy, but generally, the 3D edition is sold separately.

edit: whoops! I should have checked! No Triple Play for Hugo, just the 3D edition as you say, except it does include a 2D Blu as well.

In fact this Hugo is a single Blu-ray disc which has both the 3D and 2D versions on it, no separate discs here.

I haven't seen any from the big studios but there are a couple in the UK from G2 Pictures that are 3D only and some dodgy looking horrors with 3D only versions where 2D is available in other countries,

Dragonfire

I haven't seen that around here.  I know I've seen Hugo on Blu-ray without the 3D version.
