Well, since there are some French speakers here, I though I would ask for opinions of this film. It sounds interesting, but I have been burned by too many blind buys, so I want to know what some of you think.

Touti

I haven't seen it yet but I wouldn't hesitate to buy, I actually wonder why I haven't yeat  ???

It's always difficult to answer that kind of questions to someone you don't know because what I consider the best movie in history could very well be the one you hated the most.  Tastes are not to be judged but they are different from one person to another.

That said, Depardieu is a great actor so his performance can hardly be mediocre in any movie.  If you like true stories that happened in the 19th centuries and if you like detective and police stuff, chances are you'll like it.  And if you don't you can always ship it over here ;)

Well, I was already interested in it as a period piece and a mystery. I was just uncertain as to whether the plot was plausible and the acting decent. I am wary of the film primarily because the only other film directed by Pitof is Catwoman, which is utter crap.

Well, the visuals are excellent. That is what really stands from the movie.
The story is not bad as well, and has a few good characters. I wouldn't pay full retail price for it. But I say it's a movie that, at a good price, is a good buy as well.

I found the movie quite good, I am not a French speaker ( hell I have trouble with my native English at times!) the visuals were quite stunning and the story interesting and full of twist. I bought it and have watched several times. (I'm not a big fan of Pitof either, but this was worth it.)

I saw this movie quite some time ago, but from what I remember the visuals were great, and it did have a good story to back it up. It is not as great as lets say `Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles` for example.

Darxon

I, too, like it. IMO it's another fine example of setting up a thriller / mystery story in an opulent frame, kinda like "Brotherhood of the Wolves (Le pacte des loups)" or "Arsène Lupin". These are some really good French films that accomplish the director's goal to merge two different styles into a functioning piece.

The visiual setup of "Vidocq" is amazing, Dèpardieu's performance good as ever, the story gets along very well, some nice twists, and (at least in the German 2-DVD Set) there's a lot of bonus features coming with it.

I didn't regret buying it.

I ordered it a few days ago because of this thread, I've never seen it.  Unfortunately the order doesn't ship because of another DVD that is late but I plan on watching it as soon as it comes in.  I also agree on "Brotherhood of the wolves", great movie.

I have the Canadian 3-Disc release of Brotherhood Of The Wolves. This is a great film. It is moody and atmospheric with some terrific special effects and a decent plot.

The french have been making very good thrillers in recent years, another one I really liked and didn't regret buying is "Les rivières pourpres" (The crimson rivers).

Edward Karlinski

Well, I ordered the Lionsgate version of Vidocq, entitled Dark Portals: The Chronicles Of Vidocq. I should have it by Wednesday.

Touti

I received mine yesterday.  Maybe I'll watch it tonight.  I also received "Tous les matins du monde", also with Depardieu, not sure yet which one I'm gonna watch first.

RossRoy

I'd watch "Tous les matins du monde" first. Not that I've seen any of the two, but from what I've read, Vidocq is more interesting, so I'd keep that for the end ;)

Edward Karlinski

Well, I just finished watching Vidocq. It seemed like it was made for television as it had a video quality to it. I liked the plot, which was the type of weird storyline which I enjoy. The film is atmospheric and the director obviously wanted to impart the style of a graphic novel. He succeeded in this. I am glad that I purchased this film. It is a buried treasure. It is a shame the director's next outing was Catwoman. That may have ended his career.

Touti

So I finally watched it and really liked it.  I don't regret buying it.  I loved the photography of it, dark colors, cloudy skys at nights, it really ads to the ambiance.  I only wished Depardieu had more scenes in the movie.
