DVD Collectors Online

As many of you may remember from my threads a couple of months ago, this year I had a lot of trouble finding work. I thought I would post to say I am now in a full-time job at a web-design company where I am getting on the job training in all aspects of web design, including the always painful php coding. I am currently in my 6th week here.

It got me thinking that while I know the professions of many of the members in this forum there are still many I don't know. So I thought we could maybe have a thread getting to know what each of us does.

Web design, that's fantastic! I envy you.

I work for a maintenance contractor located at a certain power station that supplies a quarter of Victoria's energy. It's the one everyone wants to close down.

I'm currently studying for Certificate II in I.T. I want to change my career and actually get a job I love. Hopefully studying I.T. will make that possible.

Are you studying that through Tafe? I myself did a cert 4 in multimedia and I loved it. My Mum also teaches through TAFE at the Gordon.

I'm doing my course via Cengage Online, it nationally recognised and it's very flexible; which is great as I work full time.

Hmm I've never heard of that. I'll have to look into it, sounds interesting.

There is a GippsTAFE night course on Dreamweaver that I really want to do, I think it starts next year.

After 40 years in the IT arena (most recently at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention), I am thankfully retired and loving it!

Ha, I have a feeling that there will be a lot of mention of IT in this thread.

That's pretty much the responce I was expecting lol.

Oh boy.. where to start?

Officially, I have the equivalent of a college degree in IT with emphasis on database design and programming. And that's what I was hired to do, 10 years ago.

Now, 10 years later at the same company (small engineering firm), I've never coded a single line of code, or design a single database table.

Basically, I'm now "Specialist of all things IT". Computer maintenance, network deployment, any network connected equipment is my area.

But it doesn't stop there. I also do presentation CAD drawings and designs, marketing material (brochures, presentations, press kits), etc.

Then there's the whole aspect of administrative assistant. I often write letters, quotes, translate technical documentation.

And you think that's all? HA!

I'm also in charge of documentation. Finding old quotes, drawings, project sheet, inspection report, start up reports.... all in a filing system I designed myself!

Is it all yet?

Nah! I'm also the backup receptionist, I take care of some accounting tasks..

Guess that about covers it. I'd really love to have to put this down on a CV for new job .... NOT!

I am an engineer of what we translate as "Supply and Installation Engineering". After a first job in Germany I ended up in Taiwan as a job-site supervisor which slowly evolved to project management. I am now basically the team leader of the branch office here, substituting for my boss who only visits every now and then.

I haven't done any proper engineering since I left univeristy and now mostly deal in management things and also tale care of our computer system(s); way less professionally than any other IT guy in this thread though

Well, I'm originally from the tourism. I've been working in this job for more than 20 years. I started first in a travel agency and was later on responsible for purchasing, creating and calculating package tours. A few years ago I changed to the IT department because my company was in need for a person with touristic backround. I thought: time for a change! Now my main focus (amongst many other things) is testing and global supporting of a CRM software.

I'm a tax preparer.  This will be my 12th tax season.  
I take a lot of classes every year to try to keep up with the new laws and stuff.  I just finished a class tonight...the chapter we went over tonight was very confusing.
Stuff is changing because of new IRS regulations...and the offices in town were bought, so we are a franchise instead of company owned.  In some ways that will be good, but in others.  Well...it sucks big time.  

I also write reviews, mostly of movies and books, that I post on Epinions.  I've been doing that since 2001.  I do make some from that too. 
I have started a blog to go along with that..sort of an attempt to expand my writing.  I also joined Associated Content, another site where people get paid for posting reviews and stuff.  So far I've just written about tv shows there and I only have a few things posted there.  This time of year is usually a busier for me...finishing up classes and then the yearly training for work, so I haven't had as much time as I'd like for writing.
