Seagate FreeAgent 500gb
External Hard Drive

I know absolutely nothing about this type of thing... hopefully it is a decent one.. I got it at Walmart for $55. So figured why not. I know it is only 500gb... but I never had even close to that kind of space before! :P

I own the 320 GB model and use it as local backup drive.

I like it because it's extremely silent and shuts down automatically when not in use.
The only negative that might be said: It's slow. Transfer-rate doesn't exceed 2 MB/s.

You must running it in USB1 mode..

I've had 1 500GB model that's been retired (we outgrew it for backups, so a colleague took home). We now rotate 2 1TB seagate for backups, they work great!

That is good to hear... sounds like I at least got a decent one. :)

Nope,
my mainboard supports USB 2 (full speed) on all USB connectors.
The problem seems to be within the HDD itself. It was sold as USB2 though.

Yeah, it's probably a lower specification drive, so cache and rpm might be lowered. Whip the side off one day and have a look at the label...
