o.k. - I hope it's not a too heretical question! Do any of you here in the forum have experience with the Movie Collector?
If so, do you use this programme instead of the DVD Profiler or in addition to the Profiler? I tested a trial version of the collectorz programme. It seems to be a good alternative to DVD Pro, but I was struggling (amongst other things) with the box-set handling. I would very much appreciate your opinion concerning pros and cons on this.  :D

I have tried collectorz in movie, book and cd forms but couldn't really get on with it. There are plenty of others out there and I have tried quite a few but at the end of the day I have always come back to DVD Profiler for my DVD/HD DVD/BD requirements. One thing you have to watch out for on many of these other packages is the charges, some will charge for each minor upgrade, some will charge for each version or major upgrade, some may even be freeware and some, like DVD Pro, will only charge once.

My DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray Collection
My Library
My CD Collection - sorry I use readerware for that and it doesn't have an online component.

I must admit I still don't use any software (and my collection is still so small that I don't really need to). I currently just keep a word document with a list of all my DVD's in it. I do like the look of that software though, visually it has more of a style I would go for rather than DVDP. It's probably still a long way off before I will need to use software for my collection though, I currently stand at just 85 single films, 2 complete TV series and 5 incomplete TV series.

Jimmy

Sophie it could be a good idea to start usng one while your collection isn't too big (but 85 films is a bigger collection than most of the people I know in real life). If you wait too long you risk to find cataloging your dvd a boring and endless task (I owned more than 400 when I started using one and it was long job to enter them all). At least try a free one and don't use one who works only online so you won't loose everything if the software disapear.

Critter

Hmm that's a good point. I still feel I have a very long time before my collection will grow however, I don't see it reaching over 100 films anytime soon. It could be a good idea do download a free trial of one of these though just to give it a try, a bit of practice for one day in the future when I may have a large collection.

Dragonfire

I didn't find Profiler until after I had..hmm...a few hundred DVDs.  It did take a while to enter them.  Then - because I screwed up and didn't get the right file for the backup saved before I had to reformat the computer, I had to start over.  It took me a few weeks to get it all entered.  I'm still working on little things with it.

Okay so I downloaded the one from the link at the top of this page, downloaded the trial I mean, which means I can add 50 titles before I have to buy it. It seems to be working well so far but phew, whenever I search for a title about 10 options come up. I am finding it confusing trying to find the one I have.

EDIT: I just discovered that you can just type in the barcode. That is making things a lot easier.

Dragonfire

Movie Collector?  Is there an option to add by UPC number?

Critter

Dragonfire

The number under the bar code on the DVD case.

Critter

Oh haha that's what I meant when I said barcode. I'm not actually scanning them in or anything, I am adding it by the number written under the bars.

Dragonfire

Ok. :) I didn't see you edit when I made my post about the UPC number before.

Did you get Movie Collecterz or DVDProfiler?  With Profiler, I used it for a few years with more than 50 titles before I paid for the program.  It still works after you get 50 added, some of the options for reports and stuff don't work.

Critter

I got Movie Collectorz but I am thinking of getting DVDProfiler as well to try. And also... I have only added 5 movies so far but already Collectorz is annoying me. Even with typing the UPC number I can't find the same covers that I have for some of my DVD's, and I can't find the blu-ray version of some, and some also say they have 2 discs instead of just the 1. All this after just 5 films haha.

Dragonfire

That doesn't sound good.  I would probably get irritated in a hurry.

Profiler is easy to use.  When you add a DVD by the UPC, it loads it up if it is in the database..you don't have to search through versions of the same movie.  Sometimes the titles don't match if the cover has been changed..that hasn't happened that often for me.

Jimmy

Even with the forum problem DVDP is always the best solution Sophie. You even got a lot of veteran users here to help you (so you will never had to visit its forum). It cost less than Movie Collectorz (god that looks stupid and childish to change the S for a Z) and you never had to pay anything else.

At least try it
