I never seen this show... but I heard good things. It lasted for 5 seasons.

"Lasted" may be misleading, Pete. It is commendable that the series was always supposed to be five seasons.

I've seen the first season and it really its superb.

I've seen some episodes on pay tv (Fox Germany) and I really liked it! 

I've watched all 5 seasons and it's one of the best series I've seen.  Tons of reply value as well.  I don't agree with those who say it's the best series of all time, but I think that just comes down to personal preference.  It would certainly make my top 3.  Very likely top 2 in fact.

If you have to cash, stop reading and go order it.

An amazing show that captures Baltimore quite nicely. 

I highly recommend it, as well.
