:tv:  I use Comcast for my TV viewing.  Here in the U.S. I was using what they call Digital Starter which gives you a fair number of channels.  But this morning I upgraded to what they call Digital Classic.  Don't ask me why they call it that.  I'm getting a decent deal on it...$9.99 a month for six months and then I believe it goes to about $71 a month which is only around $7 more a month than I'd been paying.  Among the channels I'll now get that I wasn't before are all of Encore's channels including Westerns which is the main reason I went for this.  I'm also getting 3 country music channels plus some other music channels I wasn't before.  I forget what else I'm getting.  No, I'm not getting any of the really big movie channels like HBO and Showtime.  Aren't those all still pan & scan?  Even if they're widescreen now, I can probably get along without them.

Dragonfire

My mom and step dad watch a lot of stuff on Encore Western channel.
I don't think HBO is in pan and scan.  Maybe it depends on the movie.

$71 a month?!? :o I am sooooooooooooo glad I don't have cable.

yup... depends on the movie. But since I get HBO (and some others) I get HBO HD in the HBO package... and I would have to think all those are in widescreen.

I was just watching a very bad western...The Legend of the Lone Ranger...on some channel called FLIXe?  This starred a guy whose name was, believe it or not, Klinton Spilsbury.  He made this movie and then was never heard of again.  :tv:

I usually like the  Lone Ranger too.

Wow $71 a month?!!  :o At least you're getting a great deal on the first 6months. I'm not sure how much the Virgin media in my house costs. Do you guys have a thing like Freeview in America?

Dragonfire

I think FLIXe is considered part of Encore.  I don't get that one, but I get one called RetroFLIXe.

It wouldn't be far off that once you start lumping on the subscription channels for movies and sport. I only have a basic TV package, but with Virgin+ so I can record and have HD channels. With fibre broadband and phone, it comes out around £50.

I think that's what we have too as we don't have any of the subscription channels. Gotta love the V+ man! :D

The most popular cable-type thing in Australia is called 'Foxtel'. It's very expensive but I did have it for a while when I was younger. I had it for maybe a year. Since then however I have just had the normal free to air TV. That used to suck, up until last year we literally only had 4 channels, one of which was mainly an other-language channel (Spanish news and the like). Last year however they brought in new free-to air channels so now we have about 6. It's much better than before and with 6 channels I probably wouldn't need Foxtel (cable).
Your package does sound cool though Roger, especially with the surgery coming up soon, it might be good to always have something on the telly to watch.

I'd have to ask what my company pays for my TV package, but a) I am certain it's not that much and b) if I had to pay $71 myself I would rather a couple of DVDs for that, since I don't really watch TV anymore; although, it is also because I have a rather limited range of programs here.

But if the difference is only $7 for what you had before, that sounds like a good deal

If I didn't have cable, I would get 1 station here..and a crappy one at that.

Without cable on my bedroom TV I get around 25 channels, including my favourite E4. I could easily get along without cable and just watch shows on DVD.

Haha 25 channels without cable, that certainly beats my 6. And I love E4! I don't actually have it but I like watching the shows on E4, like Skins.
