Vacancy (2007), a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Vacancy (2007)

Genre: Horror
Director:Rating: R
Length: 1h25
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.40:1
Audio: English / French
Subtitles: English / French

Stars:
Kate Beckinsale
Luke Wilson
Frank Whaley
Ethan Embry
Scott G. Anderson

Plot:
When David (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox's (Kate Beckinsale) car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they are forced to spend the night at the only motel around, with only the TV to entertain them - until they discover that the low-budget slasher videos they find in their room were all filmed in the very room in which they're sitting. With hidden cameras now aimed at them - trapping them in rooms, crawlspaces, underground tunnels - and filming their every move, David and Amy must struggle to get out alive before they end up the next victims on tape.

My Thoughts:
Let me start by saying this one had a lot of potential, just check how the trailer make it looks great. Sadly it doesn't go further than this...

Boring by the book script that feels like it was done by a computer using keywords to create a 100 pages script. Acting not convincing at all by two not so great actors to begin with. A complete lack of scary mood (yes, it's the kind of film full of sound to tell you when you are supposed to be scare). A dead kid add to the mix for no reason, maybe to make the viewer care for the protagonist (if it is indeed the case it doesn't work, developing the character is usually the way to do it). Even worse, we don't see any killing on the video as they all happen off-screen. Wich bring the rating non-sense, there is no reason for this movie to be rated "R" in fact here it's a 14+.

Also did you know that when the electricity is cut a VCR resumes the reading of a tape where it did stop when the electricity return...  ::)

OK I know I usually have a negative bias against the new film but seriously this one is not recommanded at all...

Big-screen stars Steve Guttenberg (Three Men And A Little Lady) and Kirsten Dunst (Drop Dead Gorgeous) encounter a host of haunts in this delightfully spooky mystery! Buzzy Crocker (Guttenberg) is a hard-luck photojournalist whose unexpected encounter with an old woman leads him to investigate an unexplained, decades-old disappearance. It seems that one Halloween night, many years ago, five partygoers vanished in the elevator of the Hollywood Tower Hotel...and ever since, their ghosts have remained trapped inside the dilapidated old building! In an action-filled story that delivers creepy fun for everyone, Buzzy ultimately teams with his niece (Dunst) to solve the mystery while managing to save their lives and capture the biggest story of the year!

Extras:
Scene Access
Closed Captioned

My Thoughts:
I know at first thought what does this have to do with birthday? That is what I thought at first till my daughter reminded me how much it does have to do with birthdays. Not only is there a party mix-up that caused the whole thing... but it is also the old lady's birthday when she wants to return to the hotel many years later. This is a fun little spook-tacular from Disney that is made with the entire family in mind. Brittany and I watched this one together today. And we both enjoyed it.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

"Friends" Marathon, a review by Rogmeister

The One With The Boobies--Chandler accidentally sees Rachel naked, Joey learns his father has been having an affair for 6 years and Phoebe is dating a creepy psychologist named Roger.  This is a kind of fun episode that has a fair amount of stuff going on.

The One With The Candy Hearts--Joey convinces Chandler to join him on a double date, but it turns out Chandler's date is Janice who he has broken up with twice in the last 5 months.  The girls have a boyfriend bonfire party that gets out of control and Ross goes on a date but it turns out his ex-wife Carol is at the same restaurant.  Janice utters her first "Oh...my...God..." in this episode.  Ross and Carol share a nice moment after Ross' date has walked out on the date.  Chandler winds up sleeping with Janice...but, of course, it isn't long before he has to break up with her again.

The One With The Stoned Guy--Monica has a chance at a chef's job but on the night she is cooking for the restaurant owner (Jon Lovitz) he shows up stoned after smoking weed.  Joey instructs Ross on the fine art of talking dirty to his date while Chandler quits his job because he decides it's not what he wants to do...but he eventually goes back when his boss offers him more money and a big office.  At the end, Phoebe gets a bit of revenge on the restaurant owner when he comes in for a massage...and she gives him a fairly rough one.
