Dracula - Spanish Version (1931)
At midnight on Walpurgis Night, an English clerk, Renfield, arrives at Count Dracula's castle in the Carpathian Mountains. After signing papers to take over a ruined abbey near London, Dracula drives Renfield mad and commands obedience. Renfield escorts the boxed count on a death ship to London. From there, the Count is introduced into the society of his neighbor, Dr. Seward, who runs an asylum. Dracula makes short work of family friend, Lucia Weston, then begins his assault on Eva Seward, the doctor's daughter. A visiting expert in the occult, Van Helsing, recognizes Dracula for who he is, and there begins a battle for Eva's body and soul.

My Thoughts:
This Spanish-language version was filmed on the same sets and at the same time as the English-language, Bela Lugosi version. The English-language version was filmed during the day, and the Spanish-language version was filmed at night. In this version the role of Count Dracula was played by Carlos Villar. I liked him as Dracula... he did a good job... giving the same feel as Bela Lugosi did. This version is also quite a bit longer then the English version. I did have little trouble keeping up with the subtitles (I am a slow reader)... but I was able to manage enough for it to keep my interest. The quality was a little lower then the English version... but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the movie.

I first saw this movie on HBO On-Demand and I really didn't care too much for it at the time. Giving it a rating of only 2.5 out of 5. But I must say... I enjoyed it more this time then I did the first time. I think I was a little hard on it the first time around. Sure... it isn't the best Romantic Comedy I ever seen... but I still enjoyed it more then I apparently did the first time. I really enjoyed Jennifer Garner in this movie. But then I have liked her since I first seen her on Alias. I liked the idea of making it basically a rip-off of A Christmas Carol. The first time I watched this one I really didn't care for who they picked for the ghosts. But they seemed to grow on me this time... as I thought they were just fine now. I am wondering if my mood was a little off the first time I watched this. With all that said... the movie could be funnier. And I wasn't all that impressed with Matthew McConaughey. But I am glad I have it in my collection now.

Plot:

This cut improves on an already great movie. Especially the scenes with Marlon Brando, which were excised from the theatrical cut, bring much more sense to the movie. They explain better why Superman had to give up his powers to be with Lois, and how he got his powers back. Also all the slapstick is gone now.
The first time I saw it, I was surprised how many scenes Marlon Brando had shot for this movie. I also am surprised how many Lex Luthor moments had been cut from the Lester version (all scenes with Gene Hackman were shot under Donner, therefore no new scenes were available for Lester).
