Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, a review by Rich

Title: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Runtime:101
Certificate:PG-13
Year:2009
Genres:Comedy, Romance, Fantasy

Plot:Connor Mead is the kind of guy who dumps three girlfriends. At the same time. By teleconferance. So when he attends his brother's wedding he has a single goal: score with the only bridesmaid he somehow missed. But the ghost of his departed Uncle Wayne - who taught him to love 'em and leave 'em - has another goal in mind: restore Connor's lost faith in true love, a tough assignment requiring the services of many, many Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas and director Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Just Like Heaven) uncork a romantic romp as bubbly as wedding-toast champagne. It's the perfect comedy for anyone who believes in laughs and love. Or needs to.

My Review:
Disappointing romcom that is low on comedy, a weak storyline is not bolstered by the attractive cast.
The alternative take on Scrooge does not sit comfortably, and the pro-marriage message shoved down your throat is out of touch and unrealistic. Full of needy women desperate to drag a boorish male into bed, or in Garners case up an aisle, the only charm coming from McConaughey in a totally lifeless and limp movie.
The shallowness, barren of humour, and with such a sickly and predictable ending, make this an overhyped film best avoided.

Horrors of Spider Island, a review by Jimmy

Title : Horrors of Spider Island (1960)

Overview
Eight sexy showgirls (including Euro bombshell Barbera Valentin) and their macho manager, Gary (Alex D'Arcy), survive a plane crash by taking refuge on a remote tropical island. As the gals adjust to the heat and humidity by removing most of their clothes, they also meet one of their new neigbours: a dead scientist found hanging in a giant web. Ignoring the obvious, testosterone-fueled Gary blithley takes a midnight stroll until he's bitten by an overgrown, crab-like spider and immediately transforms into a clawed, fanged, hairy-faced bogeyman who does exactly what monsters in horror films are supposed to do: chase women.

My Impression
This one is only good for its historical value as an early european sexploitation movie. It was made in 1960 so it is really low on the nudie content, in fact there is only one skinny diping scene and to be honest we don't really see anything. But there are a lot of beautifull German girls in short dress and bikini, Barbara Valentin is particullary beautifull and this is not really surprising that she had a 41 years career. The film itself is silly as an horror film (the monster is not there often and his not really important), but since the title of the print used for the DVD is It's Hot in Paradise I don't see it as an horror picture at all. Last thing, the english dubbing is really bad.

At least the german title "Ein Toter hing im Netz" make sense since they found a dead man (the professor) stuck in a spider web on the island when they arrive there.

My Thoughts:
Last night I finished the 5th season of That '70s Show. I am now in the episodes I never seen before. So that adds a little something for me.... seeing the episodes for the first time. I am still enjoying the series quite a bit. There was quite a few laugh out loud moments through-out the season.  There is also a nice selection of recognizable guest stars. This season we get to see...

- Jessica Simpson
- Tom Poston
- Betty White
- Jamie Farr
- Bobcat Godthwait
- Seth Green
- Fred Willard

Of all these guest stars... I enjoyed the appearances of Betty White the most. I really got a kick out of her character. I also liked that this set has the episodes preview of all 24 episodes that you can watch before the episodes. The set also has a few featurettes. Not bad for extras but I would have liked to seen a few more things added as well. Maybe a commentary or two... a gag reel... stuff like that. But over-all I am happy with the release.
