English Vinglish, a review by dfmorgan
Stars: Sridevi Adil Hussain Mehdi Nebbou Priya Anand Sulabha Deshpande Plot: Money, fame and the ability to speak English. In India, these 3 factors play a huge role in how society judges an individual. English Vinglish is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light-hearted yet touching and transformational journey of Shashi. Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self assured and confident woman. The film is shot mostly in New York and captures the inherent struggle of many people all over the world with the English language. Hilarious, touching, sensitive, this film marks the come back of India's biggest female star - Sridevi. Extras:
My Thoughts: This was a lovely gentle yet powerful drama. Shashi, a housewife played by Sridevi, is at times ridiculed by her husband and daughter because of her poor English skills. Shashi's widowed sister lives in New York and invites the family over to attend her daughter's wedding. Shashi though has to go earlier to assist in the preparations and her lack of English makes the awkwardness of being in a foreign country worse. Shashi joins a Teach You English in 4 weeks course on a whim whereupon she makes some new friends and skills. There is an interesting cameo by Amitabh Bachchan on the flight to New York. Rating: A gentle yet powerful 4 (From Dave's DVD/Blu-ray Reviews on February 3rd, 2013) Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, a review by addicted2dvdTitle: Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow Year: 2008 Director: Jay Oliva Rating: PG Length: 78 Min. Crawford] Brenna O'Brien Aidan Drummond Dempsey Pappion [Dempsey M. Pappion] Adrian Petriw Tom Kane Plot:Extras: Scene Access Bonus Trailers Featurettes Closed Captioned My Thoughts: This is another one I liked a lot. It was fun not only seeing the kids of the Avengers... but also seeing an old Tony Stark/Iron Man and an old Bruce Banner/Hulk. I must admit though... I do prefer the original Avengers. Some of those are my old time favorites after all. But it is cool to see what they next generation of Avengers is like. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From Marvel Movie Marathon on June 26th, 2010) Babylon 5: Marathon, a review by DJ DoenaSeason 3: Point of No Return Disc 1 Matters of Honor Synopsis: A Ranger training post is sealed of with mines and one ranger who could escape asks Babylon 5 for help. Meanwhile Londo tries to cut his connections to Mr. Morden and his associates. Also a representative of Earth comes to Babylon 5 to investigate about the Shadow vessel that destroyed Lt. Keffer's Starfury. My opinion: I always liked Marcus and I sure love the White Star. But Sheridan has to be a bit mad to try a stunt like the one in this episode. Good introduction to the next step of the story. Convictions Synopsis: A series of bombings shake Babylon 5. Bombs planted by a person who has no political agenda but to spread fear. And when Lennier tries to save Londo he gets badly hurt. My opinion: While I never really understood the motives of the bomber I really liked the tube scene between Londo and G'Kar. I also liked the arrival of the monks around brother Theo who will stay for a while on the station. A Day in the Strife Synopsis: A probe approaches Babylon 5 and transmits a message: When Babylon 5 can answer a series of highly complicated questions, they will receive important knowledge in return. If not, the probe will explode and take B5 with it. My opinion: Another average episode, there's not really much to say about it. Passing through Gethsemane Synopsis: Again we see the monks. But one of them is troubled because he gets flashes of memories but he can't remember the events. Meanwhile Lyta Alexander return to the station on a Vorlon(!) transprt ship. She has been to the Vorlon homeworld but is forbidden to tell about it. She now works for the Vorlons and must hide from the Psi Corps. My opninion: Great episode about crime and punishment. To see the life of a mind-wiped person and how the victims of a crime can't let go. I really liked the acting of Brad Dourif (Dune, Deadwood) and the actions of brother Theo at the end of the episode. (From Babylon 5: Marathon on August 11th, 2007) |
