Kal Ho Naa Ho, a review by dfmorgan

Kal Ho Naa Ho

Year: 2003
Director: Nikhil Advani
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta

Overview: For Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta), life is cold, grey and dull - as it has been ever since a family tragedy shook her world.

Between the constant bickering in her half punjabi half Catholic household, her grandmother's temper, looking after her little sister and brother and helping her mother (Jaya Bachchan) deal with the family's financial troubles - Naina has no time for things like parties, fun or herself... she's twenty-three, going on fifty. she is serious. She is boring.

Enter Aman Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan). like a whiff of fresh air, he moves into their tiny indian neighborhood to take it over. Helping others to resolve their problems, face life's little challenges - Aman has all the answers. Much to Naina's irritation, he insists on interferring in her life too...

Aman pushes Naina into doing things she would never dream of doing. He nags her till she learns to smile. He conspires with friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), an eligible Manhattan bachelor to help find her happiness.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is the story of Aman, Rohit and Naina's journey together - how  they discover themselves, find the courage to love and come together to celebrate life.

My Thoughts: Yet again another wonderful recommendation. This must be the one weepy to rule all other weepies. The first half of the film builds the characters and their dynamics leading to a little weepy session before the intermission. Then the second half is powerful with many weepy hits all through it leading to its conclusion and small postscript set 20 years later. Overall this is not just a weepy though, this film has a very strong multi-threaded story being told with some unexpected reveals.

My Rating: A marvellous 4

p.s. I loved the Bollywoodized interpretation of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman".

Ring Around The Rosie, a review by Rich

Title: Ring Around The Rosie

Movie Count:26
TV Ep. Count:16

Runtime:88
Certificate:R
Year:2005
Genres:Horror

Plot:In this electrifying suspense thriller, your deepest fears become reality. Following her grandmother's last wish, Karen (Gina Philips, Jeepers Creepers) reluctantly travels to a remote, run-down mansion to sell the family estate where she grew up. Karen soon realizes that she's not alone at the property. Living in the shanty at the horse stables is Pierce (Tom Sizemore, Heat), an odd and mysterious caretaker. With every passing night as she rummages through the dusty house, Karen's fond memories of her childhood turn into nightmares.
Haunted, Karen feels relief when her sister arrives, but things only spiral out of control when Pierce becomes increasingly more violent. Suddenly both women find themselves trapped in a house that preys on their greatest fears. Karen has no choice but to face the horrible memory she thought she put behind her and walk the line between bad memories and deadly reality.

My Review:
Not the worst effort I've ever watched, but certainly below par. The direction, production and acting was as expected in this low budget flick, although Tom Sizemore stood out as a pretty convincing nutter. The whole thing falls apart with about as flimsy a storyline as the 2 sisters clothes were, and the ending only made you think was it worth watching in the first place?
A lack of tension, horror, suspense or drama puts this effort into the easily forgettable category.
My Rating
Out of a Possible 5

Plot:
According to a recent study, 63% of American families are now considered dysfunctional. According to Christopher Titus, that makes him a proud member of the majority. Welcome to the extremely dysfunctional -- and semi-autobiographical -- world of Christopher Titus' screwed-up relationships with his loving girlfriend (Cynthia Watros), his not-too-bright kid brother (Zack Ward), his flamboyantly-anal best friend (David Shatraw), his manic-depressive schizophrenic mother, and most of all, his five-times-divorced, wussy-hating, abusive father (Stacy Keach). It's a darkly hilarious ride through a life filled with suicide, alcoholism, dementia, violence, crime, comas, restraining orders and more. This is not your average 'happy family' sitcom. This is TITUS.

This collection includes 33 complete episodes -- featuring such guest stars as David Hyde Pierce, Jay Leno, Richard Benjamin and Ed Begley Jr.Titus
Season 1.01 Dad's Dead
Writer: Jack Kenny (Writer), Brian Hargrove (Writer), Christopher Titus (Writer)
Director: Michael Lessac
Cast: Christopher Titus (Christopher Titus), Cynthia Watros (Erin Fitzpatrick), Zack Ward (Dave Titus), David Shatraw (Tommy Shafter), Stacy Keach (Ken Titus), Phoenix Forsyth (10 Year Old Titus), Dylan Capannelli (5 Year Old Titus)

A perfect introduction to the series and its humor. How the main characters think their dad his died because he hasn't left his room for four days and are afraid to check on him. And as a viewer you only see the dad in flashbacks and as a first time viewer you think this is how the series will play out.
