F For Fake, a review by Danae Cassandra

F For Fake
Year of Release: 1973
Directed By: Orson Welles
Starring: Orson Welles, Oja Kodar
Genre: Documentary

Overview:
Trickery. Deceit. Magic. In Orson Welles's free-form documentary F for FakeF for Fake is an inspired prank and a searching examination of the essential duplicity of cinema.

My Thoughts:
What is art? Why do we value it? Because we appreciate it, aesthetically? Because it is beautiful, or it speaks to us? Or because someone has told us it is rare and valuable? If we loved a painting, do we then hate it if exposed as a fake?

What is a documentary? Is it a true story, or simply a piece of non-fiction? If we enjoyed a story we believed to be true, and later found out it was fake, is our enjoyment less?

Does our knowledge of something make it more valuable? Or does it make it worthless?

Endlessly interesting film, and worth watching - if only for Welles' wonderful, creative use of editing. Don't watch it if you need a straight story told in a linear fashion. That isn't what Welles is after here, and if you're expecting that you'll be disappointed.

Bechdel Test: Fail

Overall: 4/5

Woochi: The Demon Slayer, a review by dfmorgan

Woochi: The Demon Slayer

Year: 2009
Director: Choi Dong-hun
Cast: Gang Dong-won, Kim Yoon-suk, Lim Soo-jung
Overview: Discover the movie that delivered the biggest box-office opening in Korean Cinema history and experience breathtaking hi-octane thrills from the celebrated action-director of 'The Good, The Bad and The Weird' and 'Brotherhood'.

When a dark lord obtains the secret to unimaginable power, an elite army of shape-shifting goblins threatens to destroy the world, as we know it. However, just when all seems to be lost, a great warrior-wizard, named Woochi, travels through time to fight for the future of all mankind... Crammed with "plenty of action and excitement (Beyond Hollywood)", Woochi the Demon Slayer is a "romping fun-packed fantasy adventure (Twitch)" that will thoroughly entertain you from start to finish!

Watched: 29th Apr. 2011
My Thoughts: Quite an enjoyable fun romp. A couple of switches between the past and the present early on to set the stage. Then the telling of the protagonists past encounters leading to a 500 year banishment. Then the jump to the present so they can meet and resolve their differences. Generally a good actioner with plenty of wire-work and a degree of CGI.

My Rating: An overall fun film for a 3

Hearts Afire: The Complete Second Season, a review by addicted2dvd

Hearts Afire: The Complete Second Season (1993/United States)

Newlyweds John and Georgie Anne (the one-and-only John Ritter and Night Court's Markie Post) abandon bit city politics for the craziness of small-town life in this irresistable TV comedy! Helped out by John's best friend (the hilarious Billy Bob Thorton, Bad Santa), the couple attempts to revive the local paper. Adding to the mayhem is the incredible supportig cast, including the diminutive, but big-talking Lonnie (Leslie Jordon, Will & Grace) and the cynical, sharp-tongued Madeline (Conchata Ferrell, Two and a Half Men). From the creator of Designing Women, this warm and witty series has become an addictive pleasure for viewers around the world since its original 1992-1995 run! Now get fired up for all 16 episodes of this fun-filled show's smokin' second season, now on DVD for the first time.

My Thoughts:
Just finished off the second season of Hearts Afire. They pretty much changed the entire series. Moved them away from Capital Hill... moving them to the small town John and Billy Bob grew up in. I found I am enjoying this new format a bit more then what they had for the first season. I was never much of a fan of the Senator character they all worked for in the first season. But I really enjoy the new characters of Madeline Stoessinger and Lonnie Garr. Definitely an improvement over the first season. Now I am looking forward to starting season 3.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
