Jennifer 8, a review by Rich

Jennifer 8

They are the unidentified victims of an unsolved death spree, women linked by a killer's gruesome handiwork...and by police files giving them the code name "Jennifer." Homicide investigator John Berlin believes he's made a breakthrough in the case when he uncovers a key witness: a young blind woman named Helena. Yet who can rely on the testimony of a witness who cannot see? Who can trust Berlin when he is ultimately suspected of the murders? And who can keep vulnerable Helena from becoming the next Jennifer?
Andy Garcia (Hero) portrays Berlin and Uma Thurman (Final Analysis) is Helena in this tightly coiled mystery costarring John Malkovich, Lance Henriksen and Kathy Baker. With top stars, top suspense and a surprise ending, it's no surprise "Jennifer 8 is a 10!" (Bill Diehl, ABC Radio Network).

Atmospheric and tense, a great cast is well directed in this excellent suspenseful thriller.
Awash with red herrings, this whodunnit gives Garcia a platform to truly impress, unlike the last few movies I've seen him in. It does stray a little bit with too many coincidences, but nevertheless still holds firm leading up to the final conclusion and some good scenes between Garcia and Malkovich.
Underrated and relatively unknown remake, it is worth a viewing.

My Thoughts:
This is a movie I have always heard good things about. But it is the first time I ever got the chance to see it. There is a few people in this movie that I know from TV Series. There is Kiefer Sutherland (24), Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Jerry O'Connell (Sliders). This movie reminds me a bit of my childhood. A simpler time. A time when you could go out and play... exploring the neighborhood without your parents having to worry where you are every minute of the day. Something that just don't seem to exist anymore. Though the setting of this movie is well before my time... it still made me think of the simpler times when I was at that age. So much has changed since then. Unfortunately not for the better.

I had some pretty high expectations going into this movie. I was hoping not too high... taking away from my enjoyment. Luckily that wasn't the case. As I really enjoyed every minute of it. The movie is a really good drama with just enough lightheartedness to off set it from becoming to dramatic. I especially got a kick out of when the kids out on their adventure had to cross through a lake in the woods. Coming out the other side discovering they were covered in leaches. If by chance... like me... you haven't had the chance to see this movie before... be sure to check it out soon. I highly recommend it.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

Haibane Renmei
1.01 Mayu - Sora wo ochiru yume - Ourudo Houmu (2002-02-09)

A wonderful story about angel-like creatures with beautiful animation work. A girl finds herself, after having some strange dream, coming out of a cocoon with small wings on her back. She has lost all memories of her previous life and now must find out what it means to be a "Haibane" (this is how these creatures are called).
