Creature From the Haunted Sea, a review by Danae Cassandra

Creature From the Haunted Sea
Year of Release: 1961
Directed By: Roger Corman
Starring: Antony Carbone, Betsy Jones-Moreland, Edward Wain, Beech Dickerson, Robert Bean
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Rating: NR

Overview:
A government agent learns that a Caribbean island is in revolt and a mobster is shipping off with fellow criminals and the treasury loot.  The agent decides he must infiltrate the gang to try to steal the booty, but first he has to invent a deadly sea creature so that he can more easily attain the treasure.

My Thoughts:
I love the creature!  He's absolutely great!  Beyond that, this was a pretty funny film, with Carbone doing an impression of Bogart as the gangster through the whole film, the secret agent is completely clueless and the rest of the gang are the most improbable group of criminals you could imagine.  There's a subtle political critique too, since the "good guy" is an idiot American spy, the bad guys are trying to rob Cuban military men who, in turn, stole the gold from the Cuban treasury.  Ultimately you gotta root for the monster!  He's the best!

I think if you like Roger Corman you'll like this film.

Bechdel Test:  Fail

Overall: 2.25/5

Deadtime Stories, a review by addicted2dvd

Deadtime Stories
Your favorite nightmares come to life in a horror/fantasy salute to the age-old bedtime story ritual. Travel on a mysterious journey to a medieval world populated by blood-crazed witches, evil experiments and captive maidens.

Then from the catacombs and dark caverns of medieval Europe, you plunge into modern suburbia and the frolicsome adventures of a nubile lady jogger stalked by a savage werewolf.

Finally, sensuality becomes macabre black comedy as you follow the trail of three escaped mental patients who share a country house with a daffy murderess.

My Thoughts:
Time for a new Anthology horror. I thought I might have seen this one before... but I didn't. I must have just remembered seeing the case at the video store or something. It is a good movie.... but is far from the best anthology horror I ever seen. Really is pretty low-budget... and some of the acting left much to be desired. But it had it's moments. I think of all the stories I liked the werewolf story the best. The witch story was pretty cool as well... but the last story didn't work very well for me. It was actually more silly then anything.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 4: Disc 1

EPISODE 1: THE FRESHMAN
Buffy's initial trouble adjusting to college life is soon overcome when she discovers the only difference between high school and college is that the monsters are bigger and badder.

My Thoughts:
This was a good episode. I know when I first watched this series I was concerned how the change to college life and the slayer into adulthood would effect the series. There was some problems in this area... but they were able to pull it off. But more on this later. The first episode of the new season was right good... I enjoyed every minute of it. Especially with Buffy finding out that Vampires can still give her a run for her money, so to speak.

EPISODE 2: LIVING CONDITIONS
A series of nightmares converging a soul-sucking demon leave Buffy convinced that the best way to deal with her overly perky college roommate is to simply kill her.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode. Buffy friends don't trust her that there is something unnatural going on... thinks she is just having trouble dealing with the change in her life. I think my favorite scene in this episode has to be when Oz and Xander realize they didn't tie Buffy up tight enough.  :hysterical:

EPISODE 3: THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY
As Buffy begins a new relationship, Spike returns to Sunnydale in search of a fabled ring which allows vampires to walk unharmed in the light of day.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode... we find out that Harmony is now a Vampire... I thought I saw her get bite in all the confusion of Graduation Day: Part 2... Buffy learns a lesson in love... and has to fight an invincible Spike.

EPISODE 4: FEAR ITSELF
A Halloween party at a campus frat house takes a frightening turn with the sudden appearance of blood-sucking bats, zombies, and a demon that plays on everyone's innermost fears.

My Thoughts:
Now... this episode was just plain fun... A lot of fun! I always loved the Halloween episodes. and this one I definitely enjoyed from the beginning all the way to the hilarious ending. You just had to love it when that Fear Demon showed himself.
