Never Say Never Again, a review by Rich

Never Say Never Again

In this remake and updated version of the 1965 THUNDERBALL, James Bond (Sean Connery), who has been primarily teaching for the last few years, is quite happily yanked out of semiretirement to deal with the deadly SPECTRE organization's newest plan for the destruction of the planet. (The Bond story line mimics Connery's semiretirement from the role, which he had last played in 1971's DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.) Agent Number 2, also known as Maximilian Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer), has managed to steal two cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads, and Agent Number 1, Blofeld (Max von Sydow), has threatened to explode them in areas with large populations if a huge, and almost impossible, ransom demand from the NATO countries is not met. The film features an excellent gaming battle between Largo and Bond, as well as stunning turns by Barbara Carrera and Kim Basinger. Technically not an offical Bond movie, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN was released around the same time as OCTOPUSSY, starring Roger Moore.

Looks like a Bond, smells like a Bond, sounds like a Bond, but it isn't a Bond!
Despite the ingredients being similar, they could not quite replicate the winning formula that is 007. Connery does his best to pull the film through, Bassinger was a convincing Bond girl, and the sexy Barbara Carrera raised temperatures especially when dressed as a nurse with long leather boots. There were exotic locations, plenty of action and fights, and I am sure a fairly hefty budget.
But now the negatives and why it cannot be considered in the same breath as the 007 series. The theme tune is weak, the opening titles (minus the sexist girls) are run of the mill, M is a disaster with Edward Fox, Q is basically absent, lack of flirting with Moneypenny, 007's glib remarks lack the typical punch and cheesiness, the action is below par, the effects disappointed several times (notably the missile scenes), distinct lack of gadgets, and a different and inferior feel to the whole production compared to the mainstream Bonds.
Close - but no cigar

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed revisiting these characters. It was good to see all the old cast come back together for the reunion movie... and I like what they did with the advancements in bionics. And I must admit I got a little kick out of the moments that Steve Austin was a little jealous of what the new bionics could do. A fun reunion film... if you liked the series you will like this.

Sliders Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

3. GILLIAN OF SPIRITS
When a bizarre accident separates Quinn from the rest of the Sliders, the only hope for the remaining trio is to put their faith in a troubled young girl with a history of hearing voices--and an ability to communicate with spirits.

My Thoughts:
This is a good episode. I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. For some reason I was remembering this not to be an as good episode. But it was really good. I liked how they had Quinn as something like a Ghost through-out the whole episode. I do wish we would have been able to have some more time in the world they slid to from anti-technology world. I mean who wouldn't want to spend some time taking in the sites at Nudist World!

My Rating:

4. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WEALTHY
In an America in which all land west of the Mississippi is part of the Nation of Texas, Quinn finds himself at the center of some highly unorthodox corporate raiding when a gunfight earns him a reputation for being quick on the draw.

My Thoughts:
This is a good episode... but not one of my favorites. I had a hard time with the combination of the old west and corporate business/Stock Marcket.

My Rating:

5. EL SID
When Quinn rescues a beautiful young woman in distress on a world ruled by violence, her homicidal boyfriend swearing vengeance for an imagined slight, follows the sliders through the vortex to a world where San Francisco is a maximum security prison.

My Thoughts:
This episode I enjoyed. I liked the whole prison idea.

My Rating:

6. TIME AGAIN AND WORLD
Wade witnesses a shooting seconds before a slide, but when the vortex lands the travelers in a parallel San Francisco just as the same murder is about to occu r, she intervenes--an action that embroils the quartet in a bizarre plot involving a disgraced federal judge, an underground resistance movement and a United States under martial law.

My Thoughts:
Pretty good episode. An interesting idea... but thought the story was a little on the slow side. I found my attention drifting from the episode to other things.
