Martian Child, a review by DJ Doena

John Cusack    ...    David Gordon
Bobby Coleman   ...    Dennis / The Martian Child
Amanda Peet   ...    Harlee
Sophie Okonedo   ...    Sophie
Joan Cusack   ...    Liz
Oliver Platt   ...    Jeff

Synopsis: Originally his wife and he wanted to adopt a child. But then his wife died and now he's alone. But he still decides to adopt a child and he chooses the child that is "allergic" to sunlight and who is not an Earthling at all but a Martian. Over the next months David tries to bond with Dennis and to get him out of his shell but it's a laborious experience for both of them and everybody who tries to help.

My Opinion: This is not really a comedy. It's a story about a guy who learns how to be a father and a child who learns how to be a son (that's the tagline of the movie but it pretty much sums it up). It's a very empathetic movie without cheap jokes and it's great to see when they finally bond. It was a blind buy for me, I didn't really know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the movie that I didn't expect.

My Thoughts:
This is what I would call more of a light horror... it played out more like a suspense/thriller... but also had a bit of blood in it as well. Another thing I noticed is this movie (which was made in 1981) has a real TV Movie feel to it... if it wasn't for the gore and the several scenes of nudity I would have guessed that this one was a TV Movie. There is a couple familiar faces in it as well... Of course Jennifer Jason Lee... but also Lauren Tewes who was part of the main cast of The Love Boat. It is a good movie... well above average. Unfortunately the  DVD itself has absolutely no extras what so ever.

My Thoughts:
This is the series that made me a fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think she was just fantastic in this series. As was Aisha Tyler and David Conrad. This first season stuck more to the drama... it isn't until later seasons that they explored the more spooky storylines such a series can do. I really enjoyed most all the episodes in this season. And the season ends with a bang. Though I must admit the big surprise they had for the end of the first season I seen coming from a mile away. Even the first time I saw the 2 part season finale when it originally aired I told my whole family what I thought (as the whole family loved this show from the start) in part one of the finale. They all thought I was nuts... but at the end of part two they all seen I was right. If you never seen this series before I definitely highly recommend it. Some of my favorite episodes from the first season...

- Pilot
- Lost Boys
- Melinda's First Ghost
- Free Fall
- The One
