Poor Pretty Eddie, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Poor Pretty Eddie (1975)

Genre: Drama
Director: Richard Robinson
Rating: R
Length: 1h25
Video: Widescreen
Audio: English
Subtitles: Spanish

Stars:
Leslie Uggams
Shelley Winters
Michael Christian
Ted Cassidy
Dub Taylor
Lou Joffred
Slim Pickens

Plot:
A wrong turn on a jazz singer's road trip results in her car breaking down near an isolated lodge run by a faded starlet and a young, homicidal Elvis impersonator.

My Thoughts:
I did go on this one with very high expectations, since I have waited for its release for more than two years. Usually this is the perfect recipe for an huge deception but it wasn't... This is probably one of the weirdest movie I've seen (how many films intercut an interacial rape scene with one of dogs mating?), but at the same time full of incredible artistic scenes. All the violence is shown in slow motion just like in a Sam Peckinpah's films and most of the principal photography is incredible (by exemple a scene at a waterfall is a little jewel for the eyes). You add to the mix strong acting performances from Michael Christian (Peyton Place), Leslie Uggams (Roots) and Shelley Winters with some well known character actors like Ted Cassidy (The Addams Family) and Slim Pickens as a result you got a perfect southern backwood dangerous redneck type of film. The synopsis do a comparaison with Deliverance but I've to disagree since the only common point is that it happen in the south.

Really this one is recommanded and it isn't as graphic or violent that you could believe it is. But of course this is a product of its time and you will never see anything like this ever made.

Fanboys, a review by Silence_of_Lambs

Fanboys

Summary:
Star Wars fans travel to Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

My Thoughts:
Not quite sure what I actually expected of the movie.
But definitely not this: A "Road - Coming of Age - Comedy - Screwball" Movie. And believe it or not, it's actually good (provided you're not a Trekkie, then you are allowed to hate it  :P).
The story is way too much off the track to be "believable", but hey, it's a comedy, if you expect realism watch a documentary.
Many of the scenes look familiar and this is intended: We are talking about a hommage to the look and feel of the pre-"Episode I"-era here and so of course you'll find some hints on the movies the nerds wasted their time with until Episode I was released.
What made this film so nice for me is that one of the characters seemed to be me (Hell, I even had the same T-Shirt and for some reason the cassette-player in my car only ever knew one band  :bag:)

So all you nerds out there: If you want to make a time travel and remember how it was to wait for Episode I (the, as it later showed, by far worst part of the franchise), watch this movie, it's about you.
All the others get a quite enjoyable flick about 5 friends on a mission impossible.

My Rating: (out of possible 5)

Doctor Who Marathon, a review by Tom

Doctor Who
Series 1.03 The Unquiet Dead
Writer: Mark Gatiss (Writer)
Director: Euros Lyn
Cast: Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), Alan David (Gabriel Sneed), Huw Rhys (Redpath), Jennifer Hill (Mrs Peace), Eve Myles (Gwyneth), Simon Callow (Charles Dickens), Wayne Cater (Stage Manager), Meic Povey (Driver), Zoe Thorne (The Gelth)

Originally I only wanted to watch one Doctor Who episode today. But then I saw that Eve Myles guest starred in this episode. I now know her from the main cast of Torchwood. Her character here is very different. If I hadn't read the name, I am not sure if I would have recognized her. Even though knowing it is her, it is rather obvious. She did a good job.

This episode reintroduces the concept, that when the doctor travels to the earth's path, he usually encounters an alien life form, from which he has to save humankind. It is a good episode, even though I am not much a fan of "ghost" stories.
