The Cold, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: The Cold (1984)

Genre: Horror
Director: Bill Rebane
Rating: Unrated
Length: 1h24
Video: Full Frame
Audio: English
Subtitles: None

Stars:
Tom Blair
Jim Iaquinta
Carol Perry
Stuart Osborne
Don Arthur

Plot:
Nine people are invited to a secluded mansion at the request of three millionaires. It seems the millionaires have invited these people to participate in a game, wich involves their deepest fears, for a prize of $1,000,000. Each guest must face and survive their encounters in hopes of winning the money.

My Thoughts:
Can I say that I live an overdose of Bill Rebane's movies, 3 in 2 days (I've not written a review of The Demon of Ludlow, because this movie is just stupid)... The basic idea of this movie is good since this is a reality show long before their creation, but this is the only good comment that I will make. The acting is incredibly bad : one of the girl had absolutly no acting talent she's in the film because she had agreed to do the nude parts. There are absolutly no characters building, most of them die and we have no idea of who they are. I'm sure that this movie had no script : the story change continuously even the end make no sense since this killer is never mentions or seen in the movie before the end.

Probably the stupidest movie in this boxset.

Zombie Holocaust, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Zombie Holocaust (1980)

Genre: Horror
Director: Marino Girolami
Rating: NR
Length: 1h24
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English
Subtitles: None

Stars:
Ian McCulloch
Alexandra Delli Colli
Sherry Buchanan
Peter O'Neal
Donald O'Brien

Plot:
Peter Chandler and Dr. Lori Ridgeway come across a gruesome flesheating cult in New York. Determined to uncover the origins of this mad corruption, they set out on an expedition to the primitive island of Keto. The two are soon trapped in the wilderness, surrounded by a tribe of cannibals and the insane scientist, Dr. Obrero. The doctor captures Chandler, and prepares him for a series of experiments designed to bring about the end of human mortality. In turn, Lori is captured by the murderous tribe and subjected to their bizarre rituals. In the tradition of the classic film, ZOMBIE, Ian McCulloch reprises his role of a New Yorker faced with primal horror.

My Thoughts:
Obviously this film stole its inspiration from two movies: Zombi and Cannibal Holocaust (if it would have been made by another director his fanboys would say it's an hommage). Not one of the best italian movie in this genre. In fact it goes in every directions with lot of things never explain, the dubbing is very weak (there is so many non-sense line, out of sinc talking and annoying high pitch tone voices) and the musical score isn't very good. But the effects are good as usual with the italian movies (except for the scalping FX who are really cheap looking and unrealist) and had one of the most apparent goof ever seen on screen, so it isn't that bad.

Veronica Mars Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 1: Disc 2

Episode 5: You Think You Know Somebody
Border incident. Troy's trip to Tijuana ends with him saying adios to his father's car when thieves nab the wheels. Good thing he has a detective for a girlfriend. Or is it?

My Thoughts:
This is a pretty good episode... but not one of my favorites... in this episode Veronica finds out that her father is dating her guidance counselor... and her father runs a background check on  Veronica's boyfriend Troy... giving it to her... telling her she can look at it if she wants... but the decision is hers. Also Veronica continues her search for her mom. In this episode I found myself more interested in the side stories then I was in that week's mystery.

Episode 6: Return of the Kane
Dirty politics in the school election has Veronica doing the Woodward-and-Bernstein bit. Plus: Logan creates a PR nightmare for his movie-star father when he sets up fight nights featuring homeless men.

My Thoughts:
This one was a good episode. Not only did we get a decent weekly mystery that was entertaining... it really worked hard on the season long mystery as well.

Episode 7: The Girl Next Door
Veronica's pregnant neighbor disappears right after an argument with her artist boyfriend. Pranksters: Weevil and Logan unleash their creativity when they serve detention together.

My Thoughts:
This was a decent episode... I enjoyed it... but it did have one major flaw in it. This is one of the episodes that works mostly on the single episode mystery. And I still remember the first time I saw it I found the end of the mystery to be very predictable. I saw it coming a mile away. This is something that don't happen all that often on Veronica Mars... but it does happen every now and then.

Episode 8: Like A Virgin
Pure hell. An online "purity test" ruins the reputation of Veronica's friend. Also: Keith helps Wallace's mother lose a bad-news tenant. And Veronica visits Abel Koontz on death row -- with disturbing results.

My Thoughts:
This was definitely a good episode... very entertaining... with a surprising ending. I especially liked how they handled who was behind the "purity test".
