Dutch, a review by addicted2dvd
Stars: Ed O'Neill as Dutch Ethan Embry [Ethan Randall] as Doyle JoBeth Williams as Natalie Christopher McDonald as Reed Ari Meyers as Brock Plot: Ed O'Neill of "Modern Family" stars as Dutch Dooley, a working-class good guy who's the new boyfriend of a wealthy big shot's ex-wife. But when the woman's spoiled son (Ethan Randall, of Can't Hardly Wait and Sweet Home Alabama, in one of his first film roles) refuses to come home from his Southern prep school for Thanksgiving, Dutch volunteers to pick the bratty boy up for a road trip back to Chicago that quickly goes hilariously wrong. From fireworks fiascos to hitchhiking with hookers, can a man who's really just a grown-up kid find a way to bring out the child in a little jerk? Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore, "Harry's Law"), E.G. Daily (Valley Girl) and JoBeth Williams (The Big Chill, Poltergeist) co-star in this comedy hit written and produced by John Hughes (Home Alone, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) and directed by Peter Faiman ('Crocodile' Dundee) about two strangers about to become best friends...with the scars to prove it! Extras:
My Thoughts: Sure... this is definitely not an award winning film.... but I enjoyed it. It is a fun and silly movie. It felt like a fun twist on the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Ed O'Neill was great as Dutch... and the kid was pretty good too. Definitely worth the time put in to watch it but there is better out there. Cover blurb: Academy Award Nominee Amy Adams, Golden Globe Winner Emily Blunt, and Academy Award Winner Alan Arkin find an unexpected way to turn their lives around in this "colorful, refreshingly quirky comic drama" (Leah Rozen, People). Desperate to get her son into a better school, single mom Rose (Amy Adams) persuades her slacker sister Norah (Emily Blunt) to join her in the crime scene cleanup business to make some quick cash. With the help of their ill-fated salesman father (Alan Arkin), they climb the ranks in a very dirty job, finding themselves up to their elbows in murders, suicides, and... specialized situations. But underneath the dust and grime they also come to discover a true respect for one another, and create a brighter future for the entire Lorkowski family. "Quirky" is pretty much an indie staple nowadays, and while this one doesn't exactly disappoint, it is a bit too well-calculated as an audience pleaser. Amy Adams and Emily Blunt are both gifted actresses and give strong performances. Adams has the more interesting role while Blunt is a bit underused, especially since a side plot involving her and the tech girl from 24 (name?) ends rather abruptly. All in all, pretty light fare, but nontheless worth watching. Captain Reynolds commands an old Firefly class starship called "Serenity", after the Serenity Valley, where a deciding battle in the Unification War has taken place. Reynolds and his crew smuggle stuff and loot abandoned ships as well as they do regular transports of people and cattle. And they try to avoid contact with The Alliance and the Reavers. "Serenity" While they're looting a ship an Alliance cruiser detects the Serenity and they can barely escape but now they've got a search warrant for them and their employer won't take the looted items. In a try to sell them elsewhere they take passengers to the planet Boros with a little detour... My Opinion To sad that the show only lasted for a dozen episodes. It was an interesting concept especially with all these different characters and the ambiguous captain. (From The One Where It All Began: The Pilot Marathon on January 3rd, 2008) |
