She Demons, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: She Demons
Year: 1958
Genre: Horror
Director: Richard E. Cunha (Missile to the Moon)
Rating: Unrated
Length: 1h16
Video: Widescreen
Audio: English
Subtitles: No Subtitles

Stars:
Irish McCalla (Sheena: Queen of the JungleShe Devil)
Victor Sen Yung (Kung FuPhantom from Space)
Gene Roth (Attack of the Giant Leeches)

Plot:
A hurricane shipwrecks an expedition of American treasure-hunters on an uncharted Pacific island. Searching for food, the Americans happen upon a secret Nazi base where a sadistic scientist is conducting experiments on a tribe of local jungle maidens. Horrific experiments mutate the island beauties into hideous, savage she-creatures!

My Thoughts:
We are on fifties B-movies territory with this one. We start with 4 shipwreck survivors, all of them are one stereotype : an all-american man, a rich spoil woman, a comic relief asian man and a black man (who is doom from the beginning and is the only one to die). But the stereotype don't stop with them since they are not the only one on this island. So we have the natives women who don't do nothing except a native dance. The rest of the people are escape German nazi with really funny accent, the way they are represented make me wonder how it was possible for them to win a single battle (they are really presented as caricature).

The story is stupid : the German doctor was working on a way to remove scar, because the Aryan as to be perfect (I don't invent that it's the doctor who say that). So they are gone on a volcanic island to experience, the method is a blood (??) transfer but the donor receive blood and animal DNA (something like that). This procedure transform the donor to a she-demons for a couple of days, after that she returns to normal but doesn't have any memory at all (I don't invent that either, the doctor explain it). The story continue untill the nazi doctor try the experience on the white woman, but at this moment the island come under shellfire (why? No idea the war is over for quite some times) and the three survivors escape. I've forgot something : the all-american man and the rich spoil woman fall in love even if they hate each other at the beginning.

The acting are not really good, except for Irish McCalla (enough to make me interested in her TV series, but it is not release yet and will probably never been). The make up effect for the She-demons are well done and the filming location look good too.

I don't necessary think that it's a bad movie, but many others b-movies of this time are better than this.

Rating :  :hmmmm:

CASS, a review by Rich

CASS

The incredible true story of how an orphaned Jamaican baby, adopted by an elderly white couple and brought up in an all white area of London, became one of the most feared and respected men in Britain. CASS grew up in a time before political correctness and was forced to endure racist bullying on a daily basis, until one day when the years of pent up anger came out in a violent burst. CASS found through violence the respect he never had and became addicted to the buzz of fighting. His way of life finally caught up with him when an attempted assassination on his life, saw him shot three times at point blank range. His inner strength somehow managed to keep him alive but he was left with a dilemma; whether to seek vengeance as the street had taught him, or renounce his violent past. This is the extraordinary story of his life.

For someone who grew up going to football in the late 70's and early 80's, albeit to a lower division club which did not have many incidences of hooliganism, I had read the book and hoped the film would be as mature and enlightening. Unfortunately this is a poorly put together effort, strayed considerably from the autobiography, and was badly acted from most lead characters.
It is more realistic that Green Street, but does not have the same bite and feel of Quadrophenia, I cannot see it being of any interest to anyone who did not live through the era, and I could only keep thinking it was a wasted opportunity of translating a good story to film.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 5: Disc 1

EPISODE 1: BUFFY VS. DRACULA
An uneasy encounter with the legendary Count Dracula leaves Buffy desiring to learn more about herself and thus asking Giles to once again be her Watcher.

My Thoughts:
This is another of my all time favorite episodes. It is an episode you knew from the beginning of the series that they just had to do!.. and I think they did a great job with it. I think Nicholas Brendon (Xander) played his part in this episode perfectly... to the point of stealing the show. He was just hilarious in it. I also had to laugh when Giles wanted to jump back into the pit with the 3 sister vampires.

EPISODE 2: REAL ME
As Dawn begins a journal recounting her life with the Slayer, she encounters a madman who tells her she "doesn't belong" and a group of vampires led by Harmony.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode to introduce the character Dawn... Buffy's little sister. When I got my very first look at Dawn I thought it was going to be too big of a change and was the beginning of the end of the series... but I was proven wrong. I found myself really liking her from her very first episode. Though it did take me a little getting used to the whole idea of who she was and how she was just added the way she was.

EPISODE 3: THE REPLACEMENT
When Xander blocks a Toth demon's magical blast from hitting Buffy, he wakes up the next day to find a doppelganger has taken over his life.

My Thoughts:
More of a fun episode then anything else... Nicholas Brendan once again gets to show off his talent.

EPISODE 4: OUT OF MY MIND
As Riley's friends beg him to see a medical specialist at Sunnydale General hospital, Harmony and Spike kidnap the same specialist with hopes he can remove Spike's chip.

My Thoughts:
This is a decent episode..  not one of my favorites... It is more of an episode to tie up some loose ends from last seasons main story line.
