22 Jump Street, a review by Dragonfire

22 Jump Street

I ended up seeing 22 Jump Street a week ago.  I never really wanted to see it, but I got talked into going by a friend.  I should have stuck by my initial instincts.

I saw 21 Jump Street on one of the Encore channels a few months ago.  I wasn't impressed.  The best part was when Johnny Depp turned up, but that quickly got ruined too.  This movie is mainly more of the same, with Jenko and Schmidt sent undercover at a local college after they screw up a drug bust.  Never mind that they are older than all the other students - they did at least acknowledge that they were too old to pass for high school students.  Jenko manages to become friends with a few football players who are in a fraternity.  Schmidt is left out of that, but he manages to hook up with a girl that is out of his league.  Jenko and Schmidt can't agree on things, and that does cause issues with their investigation.

Some of what happens is funny, but more often than not, the jokes don't work.  Things are way overdone.  I lost count of the number of times jokes are made about movie sequels or some kind of gay joke is done. The first few times, those things are funny, but they don't know when to stop.  Those jokes keep being used over and over and over, until long after the humor is gone.  Most of the humor is crude in some way, and that also gets old.  Too much of the movie just isn't funny.  The characters are flat and not that interesting.  I don't really like Jonah Hill.  He didn't annoy me as much in this movie, but nothing about his performance in it changed my opinion of him.

I know that 22 Jump Street made a lot of money and got a ton of good reviews.  I don't see it.  For me, the movie was a huge, unfunny mess.  Since the movie was successful, I won't be surprised if they go and make another one.

2 out of 5 stars

I did post a longer review on my movie blog.

What a Wonderful World, a review by Danae Cassandra

Where We Are:  Morocco

What a Wonderful World
Year of Release: 2006
Starring: Nezha Rahile, Faouzi Bensaidi, El Mehdi Elaaroubi, Fatima Attif
Directed By: Faouzi Bensaidi
Genre: Thriller, Romance

Overview:My Thoughts:
What a beautiful film!  Bensaidi's set pieces, choreography and cinematography create a beautiful, stylish art film.  This truly is film as art.  The scenes with Kenza on the roundabout, with the cars moving around her, are really spectacular pieces of art.  It's a very modern piece, with a mashup of genres and influences from both east and west.  With all that's good about it, the film is very disconnected from the viewer.  Perhaps this is because it is film as art rather than film as story.  The plot definitely takes a backseat to the cinematography.  You are always aware you are watching a movie.  There is never a time in which you are immersed in the film.  The characters, stylish and beautiful as they are, are also very superficial.  There is no connection between them and the viewer.  You don't really care about them.  But it's still a worthwhile film to see, for it's beautiful artistry.  It's easy on the eyes.  Just don't expect depth.

Recommended for art film lovers only.  I was reminded, in some ways, of Breathless, so if you like Godard, you should give this film a look.

Bechdel Test: Pass, but barely

Overall: 3/5

After being briefed on the top-secret project, code-named Harsh Realm, Hobbes is given his objective: eliminate Major Omar Santiago, who has taken the game hostage. But upon entering Harsh Realm, Hobbes discovers he is trapped there - and theideadly game will never end unless he completes his mission.

Pilot

My Thoughts:
This is another show I blind bought quite some time ago. And for some reason I only ever watched the first disc! I don't know why... I really enjoy the show. I found it to be very interesting. But for some reason after the first disc I just put it up and forgot about it. I like how in the pilot episode Chris Carter had X-Files Alumni Gillian Anderson doing the narrator of the video tape Hobbes watched. And then there was Millennium star Lance Henriksen as a commanding officer. Both uncredited cameos.  One of these days I really need to watch this entire set!
