Inspector Gadget , a review by Dragonfire

Inspector Gadget

Wowser! Disney's 'Inspector Gadget' turbocharges to life in a wild and quriky adventure comedy with a thousand moving parts!

During a daring rescue attempt, John Brown (Matthew Broderick), a naive and clueless security guard, experiences the wrath of the evil Dr. Claw (Rupert Everett) and is left clinging to life. Jumping at the chance to put her robotics expertise to the test, the brilliant Dr. Brenda Bradford (Joely Fisher) transforms him into Inspector Gadget - the ultimate crime-fighting tool! And Gadget is going to need every techno-trick up his cyber-sleeve to defeat the ruthless Claw - before Claw reduces our hero to spare parts and wreaks havoc on the world!

Non-stop action, seamless special effects and a gazillion gizmos make 'Inspector Gadget' a hilarious techno-thrill ride the whole family will watch over and over.

My Thoughts

I've seen the cartoon of Inspector Gadget, though it has been a while.  From what I remember, the cartoon wasn't as dark as the movie is.  There is a murder within the first few minutes of the movie and some other questionable things for a family friendly movie.  The villain, Sanford Scolex, is effective as a villain.  John, the man who becomes Inspector Gadget, is nice enough, but he seems a bit dumber than the version of the character in the cartoon.  The plot is sort of interesting, though it isn't that strong.  Most of what happens is silly or downright stupid.  Some of the silly things work all right, though others are just too silly.  I'm thinking the movie would have worked better if it had been animated instead of live action.  Even with the plot issues, I did think the movie managed to be entertaining overall.

There really isn't any mystery to what is going on since it is clear right from the beginning that Scolex is up to no good.  It would have been nice if there had been an attempt to add some mystery to what was going on.  That probably would have made the movie more entertaining.  There is violence in a few scenes, most of which is rather mild.  John is interested in Brenda, though not much tied to that comes out in the movie, so there isn't any romance either.  The characters are fine, though none of them are developed enough to be really interesting.  The cast does ok with what they have to work with.

I did get a review posted at Epinions if anyone is interested.

The Ice Pirates, a review by Dragonfire

The Ice Pirates

Have an ice day! It's a parched future, and water, the galaxy's only valuable commodity, is controlled by the evil Templars. Their only foes: a handful of daring Ice Pirates.

Spoofy-goofy comedy, otherworldly special effects, spectacular space creatures, bedraggled 'bots, and bicep-rippling swashbuckling (swishbuckling when our heroes try to blend in with some slave eunuchs) highlight this cult fave. Robert Urich (Vegas), Mary Crosby (Dallas), Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) romp through a storyline involving a determined princess, the search for her missing father, and a lost planet awash in seet water. The manic, concluding time-warp battle is just the ice-ing on the intergalactic cake. Dig in!

My Thoughts

I did get a review posted on Epinions.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete First Season marathon, a review by Dragonfire

1. Pilot
No one is ever safe, least of all Sarah Connor and her son, John. Tired of running from the machines, Sarah decides to stand and fight.

My Thoughts

I thought this was a good start to the series.  Certain things were like the first two movies, but I thought that still worked.  It made sense to me that Sarah and John would still basically be living on the run even though they thought they had stopped Skynet and Judgment Day in the second movie.  Sarah was tied to the explosion at Cyberdine and Dyson's death, so it was believable to me that the police and even FBI would be looking for her.  It didn't seem as...believable that Sarah would have gotten in the situation she was at the beginning of the episode though.  And I thought something else just didn't work right either.

Despite the few..issues I had with the episode, I still really enjoyed it.  I loved seeing Summer Glau again.  Some of her expressions did remind me a bit of River, but it was still a different character.

2. Gnothi Seauton
New future, new identity. Cromartie, the battered but relentless Terminator programmed to kill John Connor, resurfaces.

My Thoughts

I enjoyed this episode as well.  It worked well to follow what was set up in the first episode with them getting settled in a different time and everything.
I would have liked if there had been a bit more explanation for a few things though.

(click to show/hide)

I still liked the episode, but the few things I mentioned in the spoiler did bug me..and the more I think about them the more they bug me.  Hopefully those sort of things won't be happening all the time..if they do, I see myself getting really irritated at times.

3. The Turk
He's just a geek with a hobby. But is the computer chess program Andy Goode developed the beginning of the end?

My Thoughts

I did enjoy this episode as well.  It was interesting to see John and Cameron going to school and the explanation they came up with to explain why she was setting off the metal detector.  I also liked how this episode set up a new potential way for Skynet to possible start.  I didn't notice any issues that irked me in this one.

I think the cast is doing well.  I think I like Sarah from the movies a little better..but that doesn't mean this version of the character is bad..just different.

So far, even though I was irked by a few things, I still really enjoyed these episodes and am ready to watch the next disc.
