The Waterboy, a review by Dragonfire

America's favorite wild and zany funnyman, Adam Sandler (The Wedding Singer), scores big laughs in a smash comedy where the laughs never run dry! Just an oddball mama's boy from the back bayous of Louisiana, Bobby Boucher (Sandler) never wanted anything more than to quench the thirst of the dehydrated athletes who treat him like dirt! But when Coach Klein (Henry Winkler - Scream) makes the call that allows Bobby to finally stand up for himself, it unleashes a torrent of bottled-up frustration...and exposes a talent for tackling that transforms him from a meek "water distribution engineer" to the hardest hitter ever to roam the gridiron! Also featuring award-winning Kathy Bates (Titanic, Misery) and sexy Fairuza Balk (The Craft) in a hilarious cast of stars - here's your chance to join the millions everywhere who've proudly stood and cheered for The Waterboy!

My Thoughts

This one is rather silly, but it is still entertaining.  Some of the humor didn't work, though I thought the movie was funny overall.  Sandler was slightly annoying as Bobby, but it wasn't so bad that I didn't still enjoy the movie.  It is one of the sillier movies that Sandler has made, so people that don't like his silly stuff may want to stay away from this one.  This isn't a movie that will appeal to everyone.

 :D

I did post a review on Epinions if anyone wants to take a look.

My Thoughts:
Tom said he found this film rather boring and I know what he means: Hitchcock misses the mark a bit in the pacing department. The film is too long and could have used some additional trimming. The story is good (typical Hitchcock with an innocent guy getting caught in a bigger scheme) and there is several scenes which allow for suspense (notice my wording...). It seems, however, that suspense was not what Hitchcock was after. The whole affair feels more like a family drama with a tacked-on assassination plot. Many scenes drag on too long when things should rather move on creating, as Tom said, boredom in the viewer. In one scene I was noticing that Jimmy Stewart's pamts seemed too short rather then anticipating where he was going...

The actual climax of the film in the Albert Hall (which is not where Que Sera, Sera is sung, the cover blurb got that wrong) is awesome and exciting. Doris Day's acting here is wonderful, showing us a mother torn by her emotions. The editing is also excellent and the use of the music drowning out the dialog works great. Unfortunately there is a second climax which could have had the film going out woth a little bang at least, but somehow they manage to have everything grind to a halt and suddenly it's over.

Jon already mentioned in response to Tom that apparently this was a contractual job by Hitchcock and unfortunately that notion comes through almost all the way.

(if it wasn't for the concert scene it would have been )

Plot:
A Different World appeared on NBC from 1987 to 1993. As the highly anticipated spin-off of America's #1 show, A Different World mostly aired directly after The Cosby Show. The series was set at Hillman, a historically Black college with a rich legacy and reputation for successfully cultivating young minds. Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) decided to attend Hillman College in tribute to her parents and grandfather who all attended Hillman for their undergraduate studies. In Season One, A Different World clearly depicts the difference between living at home with your parents and taking responsibilty for your own actions as a young adult. This hilarious show is filled with vibrant characters. In addition to Denise, Hillman featured Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), a recently divorced 26 year old, Maggie Lauten (Marisa Tomei), the most talkative person on campus, Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), the ultra-wealthy Southern Belle, Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Hillman's smartest and funniest male student and Walter Oakes (Sinbad) the over protective dorm director.

A Different World
1.01 Reconcilable Differences

I really enjoyed this Cosby Show spinoff, when it originally aired on German TV. After the first season, there are a lot of changes. Denise and Maggie (Marisa Tomei) left the show and the show took a different direction. At first I was disappointed but then I really grew to like the series. I really hope they release the rest someday on DVD. I would really love to watch it again.

A Different World
1.02 Pilot Presentation

I decided to also watch the second episode, because it was originally supposed to be the pilot. But they decided to produce another episode coming before this one, which better introduces the characters.
Another reason I wanted to watch it is, that this episode introduces Marisa Tomei's character. This is the first role I got to know Marisa Tomei. She did a great job in this series. To bad that she is only in the first season.
