Taxi Driver, a review by Rich

Taxi Driver

Robert De Niro stars with Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle and Albert Brooks in the all-too-real story of a psychotic New York cabby who is driven to violence in an attempt to rescue a teenage prostitute.

Intense movie starring a young DeNiro as a menacing insomniac taxi driver whose life slowly unfolds, and unravels, on a self believed righteous and heroic path to kill a senator and save a child prostitute.
His portrayal of a lonely, at times desperate, disengaged and rejected member of society is convincing, and the bloody climax is brutal, graphic and shocking.
You Talking to me?
Top drawer with a great script from Schrader, masterful Scorsese direction, and a support cast including Keitel, Shepherd and Foster.
Treat yourself.

Gamera vs. Barugon, a review by Danae Cassandra

Gamera vs. Barugon  (Daikaiju ketto: Gamera tai Barugon)
Year of Release: 1966
Directed By: Tanaka Shigeo
Starring: Hongou Koujirou, Enami Kyouko, Hayakawa Yuuzou, Fujioka Takuya
Genre: Science-Fiction, Disaster, Tokusatsu, Kaiju

Overview:
Once the fear of Tokyo, Gamera returns to Earth to save it from the malevolent monster Barugon who is able to freeze anything its path. This unholy battle between fire and ice challenges the survival of mankind while bringing them an incredible slam-bang, knock-down monster slug-fest!

My Thoughts:
Witness the birth of Barugon! See him shoot his freeze ray! Cower before his magnificent and terrible rainbow!

If you think that a rainbow-shooting monster is absurd, Barugon isn't the silliest of Gamera's foes. He's actually a kinda cool monster, especially the contrast of his cold powers to Gamera's fire. We again have the theme of unstoppable forces of nature awakened by mankind's greed/stupidity. Gamera is still very much a force of nature here - he's not so much fighting on the side of humanity as he is against Barugon. There's also a lack of any annoying child characters. Not the best of the Showa films, but not the worst either.

Bechdel Test: Fail

Overall: 2.75/5

The One Where It All Began: The Pilot Marathon, a review by DJ Doena

Thunder in Paradise

What's the show about?
R.J. "Hurricance" Spencer has built a very special boat. It is very fast, specially armored and has a lot of special features. He and his partner Brubaker go on special missions for their country.

"Thunder in Paradise"
Spencer is in financial trouble because of the boat he's built. And the hotel owner Megan Whitaker has the problem of finding a husband within two days. So they make a deal...

My Opinion
Of all the "super machine" series I've watched (and I watched them all ;) [Knight Rider, Airwolf, Street Hawk, The Highwayman, Viper, ...]) this one is the cheesiest. The internal measurements of the boat are way larger than the external measurements and the acting is not very good. Ok, what do we expect from a wrestler. ;) It's definitivly more a fun series than anything else.
