5 Dolls for an August Moon, a review by Achim

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: 5 bambole per la luna d'agosto
Year: 1970
Director: Mario Bava
Rating: NR
Length: 81 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: Italian: Dolby Digital Mono
Subtitles: English

Stars:Plot:
Bava's ultra-mod 1970 murder mystery remains one of the most critically divisive and little-seen films of his career. Bava imbues the derivative script with a sly streak of black humor and a steady stream of eye-popping visuals, including a va-va-voom performance by giallo goddess Edwige Fenech. Never released theatrically in America, it has since become a favorite of Bava fans worldwide.

My Thoughts:
Four couples, the houseboy and the daughter of an absent fifth couple are vacationing over the weekend on an island. Apparently one of them is a professor who discovered a formula which the other three men want to buy from him. However the professor doesn't want to sell, whatever the over may be, going as far as burning the papers which hold the formula. One of the wives goes to see the houseboy in order to have him pleasure her only to find him murdered. Now, if you counted with me in the beginning and ever heard of "Ten Little Indians" you know what follows. Or do you...?

Bava follows the basic structure of the famous Agatha Christie plot for a while, introducing us to the characters while killing on off every once in a while. But just as we are beginning to get potentially get bored of this well known structure he throws in a WTF moment which instantly had me sit up straight and glued back to the screen. This is then followed by an interesting twist-a-rama which is ended with a surprise ending (which had me immediately rewind and rewatch as I didn't get it the first time...).

As mentioned on the cover blurb, I can see why this film had the audience divided. While the film displays stylish direction and mostly good dialog (the subtitles are riddled with bad spelling and grammar though; not as bad as Asian ones though ) it is quite a mixed bag, trying to be sexy (they all seem to come on to each other at some point), suspenseful and funny (especially that music when they reveal another dead body) within minutes of each other. The acting all over the place, with some doing a decent job and others being rather mediocre.

The Night of 1000 Cats, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: The Night of 1000 Cats (1972)
Genre: Horror
Director:Rating: R
Length: 1h02
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1
Audio: English
Subtitles: None

Stars:Plot:
t's HUGO & DORGO'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURES! Hunkmaster Hugo (Hugo Stiglitz, TINTORERA) is a millionaire playboy who boogies down in Acapulco and picks up sexy young Euro babes in his private Air Chariot (helicopter). Hugo whisks them away to his secluded old castle, where he wines, dines and seduces them with his hot, bland look. With the aid of his little, bald mute helper Dorgo (professional wrestler Gerardo "El Romana" Zepeda, EL TOPO), he kills his dates, keeping their heads in a crystal cage and feeding their chopped up body parts to his 1,000-strong army of blood thirsty, flesh hungry cats. It's meowtime in Acapulco tonight! From Master of horror director Rene Cardona Jr.!

My Thoughts:
Thank God it's the US version... why? Because the original version runs from 30 minutes and all those minutes are helicopter flying... not that we don't do an helicopter overdose in the short US version since half of the movie is that :weep:

Maybe if you are a big helicopter fan this is the film for you :hmmmm:

For the rest this is mostly boring non-sense where we have no clue of who are all those peoples and why anything happen...

At least there is a lot of cats so maybe if you are a cat maniac you'll root for them when they eat and kill people we don't care about because we don't know who they are

But maybe not... the cats are quite mistreated and they sure don't look happy (but of course a cat rarely looks happy. so what do I know maybe they had the time of their life...). Also at one point one cat is drowned at least it didn't look like a fake one to me.

Pete's Pilots, a review by addicted2dvd

Doogie Howser, M.D.
Neil Patrick Harris stars as Douglas "Doogie" Houwser, a whiz kid who breezed through high school in 9 weeks, graduated from Princeton at 10 and passed his medical board at 14. But as a 16-year-old doctor, Doogie must now find a way to balance the demands of professional medicine with the everyday pressures of being a teenager. In this debut season, Doogie experiences his first kiss, loses his first patient, fights the system at Eastman Medical Center, and discovers some unique lessons about life, death and growing up with help of his best friend Vinnie (Max Casella), his parents (Belinda Montgomery and James Sikking), his new girlfriend Wanda (Lisa Dean Ryan), his boss Dr. Canfield (Lawrence Pressman) and more. When you're a boy genius, life can be a mystery: This is Doogie Howser, M.D.

Pilot
Doogie needs to pass one test to get his driver's license, and another when he treats a critically ill boy.

My Thoughts:
I was just coming out of my teens when this series originally aired. And I instantly found this sitcom not only funny but fascinating. I always thought this series had one of the best opening scenes for the pilot episode. It introduces the character of Doogie perfectly. To this day I get a kick out of the opening scene of this episode. This is one series I am thrilled I have every episode of. After watching this episode I could see myself doing a marathon of the entire series run!
